Sad story. Had the pleasure of meeting Ron and talking with him a few times. The man truly loved the game and absolutely loved the Cubs. He will be missed by many.

Really?

I found him to be too much of a fan in the booth. I think it's great that he was a Cub through and through, but it sounded like he was jerking off everytime a guy put the bat on the ball with a runner in scoring position.

Top rate player, though, and seemed like a genuine guy.

:0008 <---------Hats off to Ron.

A great player that needs to be in the HOF yesterday, but a terrible, terrible color guy on the radio. If you wanted expert commentary on what was happening on the field, you didn't listen to Santo. Pat Hughes is one of the best in the game and he covered nicely for Santo in the booth.
He and Ernie Banks were/are the biggest Cubs supporters you will ever find and no one was about to chase Santo off the radio as long as he was able to do the job. Last couple of years he didn't make road trips and missed many home games, too.
If you haven't seen the Santo documentary called "This Old Cub" track it down today and watch it. It is fantastic even if you aren't a Cubs fan or even a baseball fan.
R.I.P. You will be greatly missed by all of baseball and anyone that is a fan of the game.

Is there anyone out there who can explain to be why he ISN"T in the Hall of Fame? As a kid growing up in the 60's and 70's there were 3 3rd basemen, Ron, Brooks, and the rest who wanted to be Ron or Brooks, and then all of his service to the Cubs and baseball after his career. I'm not even a Cubs or Santo fan, but his omission from the Hall has always baffled me more than any others

I think most borderline players are arguable when you get down to it, but I never figured this one out. His post playing career would almost merit it.
I'd just like to hear one "talking head" explain why not. The guy gave his whole life to baseball, no baggage , and has been dying for years. Probably get in now. If he does they ought to post the "prick's" names who changed their mind after his death. :nono:
