Utah WR Christopher takes swipe at 'Girlse State'

Canyon Springs High product's tweet follows dustup at Hard Rock Cafe

By MARK ANDERSON
LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL
?Las Vegas Bowl
Now it's getting serious.

One night after a minor skirmish between Boise State and Utah players, Utes wide receiver DeVonte Christopher egged on the Broncos on Monday.

Christopher, a Canyon Springs High School graduate, posted on Twitter: "I can't wait to get out here wit these Boise State or should I say Girlse State they a bunch of cheerleaders...lol."

"LOL," for those who don't know, is Internet shorthand for "laugh out loud."

But the 10th-ranked Broncos probably won't be laughing when they meet No. 20 Utah at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the MAACO Bowl Las Vegas at Sam Boyd Stadium.

It should, in fact, be serious on both sides after what happened Sunday night.

The bowl provided massages for players at the Hard Rock Cafe on the Strip.

But the room was small, and opposing players began pushing and shoving during a brief skirmish.

"If we ate dinner with other teams, I think the same thing would happen," Utah defensive end Christian Cox said. "We've both been in similar situations in terms of BCS notoriety. They're probably very frustrated that they're in Vegas when they could've been in the BCS or arguably the national championship.

"I love it. I think it's great. If you want to talk, show it on the field."

The Broncos' 34-31 overtime loss at UNR on Nov. 26 knocked them out of contention for a Bowl Championship Series game.

"A little more tension in the air, but I think guys are ready to play anyway," Boise State nickel back Winston Venable said.

Utes, Broncos ready to rumble in MAACO Bowl Las Vegas

Off-field incident, weather factor into showdown at Sam Boyd Stadium

Boise State coach Chris Petersen speaks during Tuesday's MAACO Bowl Las Vegas news conference at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The Broncos, whose BCS hopes were dashed by a late-season overtime loss at UNR, are 16-point favorites over Utah in today's game.
JOHN GURZINSKI/LAS VEGAS REVIEW-JOURNAL

Utah believed it was disrespected two years ago by Alabama, and the Utes made the point they belonged on the national stage by convincingly beating the Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl.

This time it might be Utah, though again a significant underdog, that has emboldened its bowl opponent.

A pushing and shoving match between players Sunday and an inflammatory Twitter message by a Utah wide receiver Monday could give already potent Boise State plenty of fire when the teams meet at 5 p.m. today at Sam Boyd Stadium.

No. 10 Boise State (11-1) played nice when asked about whether No. 20 Utah (10-2) fired up the Broncos for what is expected to be a wet MAACO Bowl Las Vegas. But there was little doubt Utes coach Kyle Whittingham was unhappy with the tweet by his receiver, Canyon Springs High School graduate DeVonte Christopher, that called Boise State "Girlse State" and "a bunch of cheerleaders."

Whittingham said he and Christopher have spoken. "He knows where I stand on it," Whittingham said.

Boise State's motivation is an issue because bowl victories often come down to which is the hungrier team, and the Broncos hadn't planned to spend pre-Christmas in Las Vegas.

They hoped to spend the holidays preparing for a Bowl Championship Series game, and having reached fourth place in the BCS standings late in the season, the Broncos even made a push to play for the national title.

But then came Black Friday when two teams ranked above Boise State, Auburn and Oregon, won and the Broncos lost their Nov. 26 game at UNR, 34-31 in overtime. They squandered a 24-7 halftime lead and watched two easy field goals -- one at the end of regulation and one in overtime -- sail wide along with their BCS dreams.

"We've put that behind us," Boise State coach Chris Petersen said. "The good thing about the bowl that we're in is our guys have so much respect for Utah and know what type of team they are and know that type of program they are."

Petersen discounted the importance being a heavy favorite, but oddsmakers posted a 16-point line for a reason.

Actually, for many reasons.

Quarterback Kellen Moore, a Heisman Trophy finalist, has completed 71 percent of his passes for 3,506 yards and 33 touchdowns, with five interceptions. He is 37-2 in three seasons as a starter.

"It seems like he doesn't miss," Utes defensive end Christian Cox said.

Moore doesn't do it by himself, though. He is surrounded by talented wide receivers Titus Young (65 catches for 1,151 yards and nine touchdowns) and Austin Pettis (59-804-9) and running back Doug Martin (1,113 yards rushing and 11 TDs).

Boise State is second nationally averaging 46.7 points per game and fourth with a 519.5-yard per game.

The Broncos don't rely on outscoring opponents, however. Led by players such as defensive tackle Billy Winn, a Las Vegas High product, the Broncos allow 13.6 points and 259.3 yards per game, each fourth nationally.

But to dismiss a Utah team that knows how to win this time of year could be a mistake. The Utes possess the nation's longest active streak with nine consecutive bowl victories, which is tied all time with Southern California and two behind leader Florida State.

"If we don't keep that alive, not only would we be letting ourselves down, but we'd be letting down over a decade of Utes who have come through the program and worked hard to keep that alive," Utah center Zane Taylor said.

The Utes will have to win without quarterback Jordan Wynn, who had shoulder surgery Dec. 13. Terrance Cain, 9-1 as a starter, takes his place.

"He runs their offense as well as anyone," Broncos defensive end Ryan Winterswyk said. "I think he's going to be a real dangerous threat out there."

Utah doesn't match up to Boise State statistically, but its offensive (35.6) and defensive (19.8) scoring averages are more than respectable.

"We're going to have to play our best to beat these guys," Petersen said. "They're as good as anybody we've played and better than most."

LAS VEGAS BOWL @Las Vegas, NV ESPN
Boise State (-17) Utah (61) 7:00 PM
While Boise State did not get a BCS call due to its missed kicks in Reno they
will pay a return visit to the Silver State for an intriguing bowl match-up. This
is at least a more alluring high profile game than some of the earlier
projections as Utah finished 10-2 and was highly ranked most of the year.
Utah did struggle down the stretch but the blowout loss to TCU seemed to
take a lot out of the team. Winning close games with San Diego State and
BYU was commendable and the Utes can be a threat in this game. Starting
QB Jordan Wynn will not play in this game but back-up Terrance Cain is 9-1
as a starter. Boise State definitely owns statistical edges in this match-up but
they are not as significant as one might expect. Boise State will be in a tough
motivational situation knowing the opportunity they missed and this will be
new bowl territory playing as a heavy favorite after being dogged four of the
last five years. The one bowl in that stretch as a favorite featured the
Broncos losing outright as a 10-point underdog. Coach Peterson will also be
rumored for a few openings which could be a distraction. BOISE ST BY 10
RATING 2: UTAH (+17) over Boise State

==============

Boise leads the series 4-2 SU (3-0 ATS) and has won the L/3. In the most recent meeting in ?06, BSU won 36-3 (+5) in Salt Lake City, but this is their first bowl matchup. Utah is 12-3 SU and 10-3 ATS in bowl gms (5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS under HC Whittingham) and owns the nation?s longest active bowl win streak at 9 gms (?99, ?01, ?03-?09) going 7-2 ATS during that span. The Utes are 2-0 SU and 1-1 ATS in the Las Vegas Bowl with wins over Fresno (?99) and USC (?01) while Boise is making its first appearance here. While this spot is normally reserved for the MWC winner, Utah stepped up into this one after TCU earned a BCS spot. BSU is making its 9th consecutive bowl appearance and its 11th in the L/12 yrs. The Broncos are 6-4 SU and 7-3 ATS in bowls (2-2 SU and 3-1 ATS under HC Petersen). In Boise?s L/7 bowl gms, all 7 were decided by less than one score with the avg MOV of just 3.6 ppg! Each school has manageable driving distances (Salt Lake City 6 hrs, Boise 10 hrs) allowing both fan bases easy accessibility to Las Vegas.
Utah QB Wynn started 10 gms TY after missing 2 early (inj) but was pulled in the ssn finale for Cain (reinserted after Cain threw his 2nd int). Wynn hoped to redeem himself in the bowl gm after a subpar outing vs BYU, but shoulder surg will sideline him which means the duties have been turned back over to Cain. RB?s Asiata and Wide spent the ssn splitting carries and while the Utes have split carries like that in the past, it was the 1st time S/?05 that the top 2 had more than 140 att (in ?05, QB Johnson was #2 with 152). The OL avg 6?4? 299 (2 Sr) and has started 97% of the gms together. They paved the way for 157 ypg (4.7) while all?g just 8 sks (2.1%). The DL avg 6?4? 275 (1 Sr) starting 81% of the gms together while all?g 104 ypg rush (3.0) with 14 of the tm?s 28 sks. LB?s Walker and Martinez are the tm?s top two tkl?rs, respectively. Utah ranks #83 in our pass eff D all?g 216 ypg (60%) with an 18-11 ratio. The ST?s rank #6 behind AA PR Smithson. Early in the ssn, his ret?s put Utah in a position to win numerous times and he got into the EZ twice on PR (19.7). He also avg 24.1 on KR but hasn?t scored a TD that way (yet). P Sellwood has booted nine of 50+ yds TY. The PR D all?s 9.8 while the KR D all?s 18.8.
Heisman finalist QB Moore is 37-2 as a starter and is #2 in the NCAA in pass eff (185.04). He has completed 60% or better in every gm TY incl 10 gms in which he hit over 70% of his passes. Moore leads an off that avg 319 ypg pass and 200 ypg rush and has a pair of outstanding WR?s in Pettis (BSU career rec leader) and Young (BSU career rec yds leader) who both rank in the Top 5 at Boise in career rec, rec yds and rec TD?s. Moore also has the luxury of 1,000-yd rusher RB Martin who played his way out of a talent-filled backfield and has proven to be a rec threat himself. The OL avg 6?3? 284 (2 Sr) and opened holes for a run gm that avg 5.3 ypc and has all?d just 7 sks (1.8%) which is 4th-best in the NCAA. BSU is arguably the most balanced tm in the nation ranking #4 in the NCAA in both ttl off (520 ypg) and ttl def (259 ypg). The D plays so well together that many of the individual stats are underwhelming. The DL avg 6?3? 277 (1 Sr) and accounted for 33.5 of the tm?s 45 sks (74%) while holding foes to just 2.9 ypc. The Broncos are #3 in our pass D rankings allowing just 8 TD passes and nearly doubled that amount (14) in int. BSU?s ST rank #23 and Brotzman had quietly been going about his business (needs 3 pts to break the record for most career pts by a K in FBS history) handling both P and PK duties. Prior to his costly FG misses vs UN (26 and 29 yds), he hadn?t missed a FG inside 50 yds since the opener. Brotzman also uses an effective rugby-style technique on P. BSU?s PR unit is solid with 3 players avg at least 10 ypr.
This year?s bowl for Boise should be defined as ?bubble-burst.? The BCS Championship gm was within reach and while they rebounded with a convincing win in the ssn finale, the layoff in the bowl will have them thinking about ?what if?. The Utes travel to Vegas with the nation?s longest current bowl streak having won 9 straight and remember, they have a pair of BCS bowl wins in the L/6Y. Utah will not be intimidated by Boise, is used to traveling to Vegas and will relish the role of underdog as they are the second largest dog on the board.

Utah holds the NCAA?s longest bowl win streak winning 9 straight but come into this bowl as a
17 pt dog after losing their starting QB in the last gm. Boise blew their shot at the BCS Title and has
to be a bit disappointed to be here. PP sides with Utah plus the pts and so do we.
