Monday’s 8-pack
Most World Series appearances, since 2000
5— Dodgers
5— Astros
5— Bronx
4— Red Sox
4— Giants
4— Cardinals
3— Phillies
3— Rangers

Quote of the Day
“There’s a loneliness with leadership. I just thought it was a good time for me, personally. And by that, I mean just where I am in life. And I thought it was a good time for the organization, to be quite honest with you. We didn’t have a lot of success in the playoffs in recent years.”
Former Steelers’ coach Mike Tomlin

Monday’s quiz
Which NHL team does Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris also own?
(He is really, really rich)

Sunday’s quiz
Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris also owns the Philadelphia 76ers.

Saturday’s quiz
Dante Bichette hit the first-ever home run in the history of the Colorado Rockies; his son plays third base for the Mets now.

*****************************************

Monday’s Den: Wrapping up a sports Sunday…….

— Went to the grocery store Saturday; half gallon of milk was $2.50, gallon of the same milk was $3.75. I’m not the brightest guy on the block, but you buy the gallon.

— Las Vegas Raiders drafted Indiana QB Fernando Mendoza with the first pick Thursday; he is due for a four-year contract worth $54.56M, all guaranteed.
I was wondering Friday why he wasn’t in Pittsburgh for the draft; turns out his mother has multiple sclerosis, is difficult for her to get around, so he stayed in Florida to be with his family.

— One thing I wish NFL Films would feature some year; right after the draft, when GM’s scurry to sign undrafted free agents- can find some good players there. Sometimes it is better for a kid not to get drafted in the 7th round; he might be better off picking his spot and going to a team that has a need at his position.
Watching/listening to GM’s on the phone would be fun; when Hard Knocks featured the Giants during the draft process a few years ago, they skipped that part of it.

— Still very surprised about the Red Sox firing Alex Cora so early in the season; listening to the TV broadcast of Sunday’s game, the TV guys seemed hesitant to talk about it. As for a couple of the Red Sox players:
“It’s up in the air what the true direction of the franchise is.”
Trevor Story
“They made it very clear that we get paid to play baseball and we need to just focus on playing baseball.”
Garrett Whitlock

— Over the last 29 years, NBA teams were 1,713-1 when leading by 6+ points in the last 0:30 of regulation. Lakers rallied from behind to beat Houston, making them them the second team in the last 29 years.

— NBA teams that have led a best-of-7 series 3 games to 1 have won 285 of 298 series; Denver Nuggets were the last two teams that won a series after trailing, 3-1.
Problem is, in Denver’s last three games, star Nikola Jokic has shot 2-16 from the floor in the fourth quarter.

The great actor Jack Klugman was born on this day in 1922.

— Royals 11, Angels 9 (10)
Angels led 6-0 in fifth inning, 8-5 in ninth inning.
Lane Thomas hit a walk-off homer for the Royals.
Angels’ bullpen gave up eight runs in 4.2 IP.

—Rockies 3-3, Mets 1-0
New York scored one run (Taylor HR) in 18 innings Sunday.
Mets have lost 15 of their last 17 games.
Chase Dollander allowed five hits in 7 shutout IP in the nightcap.

— A’s 2, Rangers 1
Carlos Cortes hit a two-run triple in the first inning.
Sacramento bullpen escaped bases loaded, none out jam in 6th inning.
Nick Kurtz has drawn a walk in 16 consecutive games, longest streak since 2007

— Red Sox 5, Orioles 3
Red Sox won on what had to be a chaotic day, after Alex Cora got fired.
Willson Contreras homered for the second day in a row.
Connelly Early allowed two runs in 6.2 IP; he is 2-1, 2.84.

— Braves 6, Phillies 2
Chris Sale tossed six shutout IP, got his 150th career win.
Matt Olson hit a three-run homer in the first inning.
Phillies have lost 11 of their last 12 games.

— Nationals 2, White Sox 1 (10)
Game was scoreless after nine innings.
Jose Tena homered in the 10th inning for Washington.
Nationals improved to 4-11 when they score less than six runs.

— Astros 7, New York 4
Spencer Arrighetti allowed one run in seven IP.

Wednesday’s 6-pack
Positions of players taken in NFL Draft:
36— wide receivers
27— defensive tackles/cornerbacks
26— edge rushers
24— linebackers
22— tight ends/offensive tackles
19— safeties
10— quarterbacks

Quote of the Day
“When you’re not playing well and you’re the manager of a ball club, you’re held accountable, and rightly so. I wasn’t officially offered anything, but I am open to staying in this organization. I’ve said throughout my four years as manager here, I don’t want to go anywhere else. I love this organization.”
Rob Thomson

Wednesday’s quiz
Remember the classic comedy movie Animal House? Which college campus was a lot of that movie filmed on?

Tuesday’s quiz
Before this weekend, 2018 Cincinnati Reds were the last team to fire its manager in the first 30 games of a season.

Monday’s quiz
Washington Commanders owner Josh Harris also owns the New Jersey Devils.
(He is really, really rich)

********************************************

Wednesday’s Den: Mid-week musings…….

— The over-educated morons who run college/minor league sports are at it again; looks like starting next March, the NCAA basketball tournament will now be 76 teams, instead of 68.
76 teams means six games on Tuesday, six more on Wednesday before the field is down to 64 teams, where it should be in the first place. for the first round on Thursday/Friday.
Expansion means that high major coaches who miss the NCAA’s will be on the hot seat for sure, especially with the NIL $$$ being thrown around.

— Speaking of which, only 71 early-entrant players are going into the NBA Draft this year, the lowest amount since 2003. College kids are getting paid; seems like most of them would rather get paid paying college ball than spend some time in the G League.

— Brendan Sorsby is a college quarterback who played two years for Indiana, then transferred to Cincinnati, played there for two years, then this offseason bolted to Texas Tech, where he was expected to be paid a boatload of NIL $$$$ ($5M or so).
But there’s a problem(s):

a) Cincinnati is suing to recover $1M of the money they paid him, citing breach of contract.

b) This week, Sorsby checked into a residential treatment program for a gambling addiction. Apparently, he made thousands of online prop bets on a lot of different sports.
Oy.

— Philadelphia Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson Tuesday; he took over the Phillies during the 2022 season. Here is his record:
2022- 65-46
2023- 90-72
2024- 95-67
2025- 96-66
2026- 9-19
Bad start this year, but firing the guy?
Bench coach Don Mattingly is the interim manager; his son Preston is the general manager of the Phillies, working under Dave Dombrowski.
Awkward.
Apparently Dombrowski reached out to hire former Red Sox manager Alex Cora, but Cora turned the job down.

Tuesday’s NBA games

76ers 113, Celtics 97

Joel Embiid scored 33 points in his second game back from appendicitis.
76ers outscored Boston 28-11 in the fourth quarter.
Tyrese Maxey had 25 points, 10 rebounds, 5 assists.

Knicks 126, Hawks 97
Jalen Brunson scored 39 points, had 8 assists.
Knicks led 35-22 after the first quarter.
New York shot 57% from the floor.
Knicks lead series, 3-2

Spurs 114, Trail Blazers 95
San Antonio led 65-45 at halftime.
De’Aaron Fox scored 21 points, had nine assists.
Portland shot only 35% from the floor.
San Antonio wins series, 4-1.

Famous birthdays, April 29th:

Tom House, 79
Ron Washington, 74
Jerry Seinfeld, 72
Michelle Pfeiffer, 68
Uma Thurman, 56

Jay Cutler, 43
David Lee, 43
Zach McKinstry, 31

— Phillies 7, Giants 0
Phillies win Don Mattingly’s first game as interim manager.

Nick Martinez allowed three hits in the first seven innings.
Tanner Bibee allowed one run in five IP, throwing 93 pitches.

— Orioles 5, Astros 3
Pete Alonso hit his 4th home run for the Orioles.
Shane Baz got 17 outs, got his first win with Baltimore.
Houston is 11-19, 3-11 in road games.

— AL West is struggling, from top to bottom:
15-14 A’s
15-16 Seattle
14-16 Texas
12-19 LA Angels
11-19 Houston

— Marlins 2, Dodgers 1
Janson Junk blanked the Dodgers for six innings.
Kyle Stowers went 2-for-5 with an RBI
Dodgers are 5-6 in their last eleven games.

— Cardinals 11, Pirates 7
Nolan Gorman homered, drove in three runs.
