I don't care what you say as far as THEY KNOW that DEATH is part of the JOB, nobody goes into any JOB thinking they REALLY are going to end UP DEAD:::

BUT when the time does arrive to go in HARMS WAY they DO IT!!!!

The FAMILIES that lose a Soldier should be COMPENSATED for LIFE, These People SERVED our COUNTRY, THEY SERVED ALL OF US::: NOT JUST A FORTUNE 500 Company and THEMSELVES:::

FOR C-sake they were going to give TURKEY 20-30 BILLION: FOR WHAT!!!!!!!!!!!

I would take it one step farther, though.

I think that this plan should include all civil servants on all levels: Local, State, County and Federal.

I propose a sliding scale whereas the death benefit is inversely proportional to the likelyhood of death on the job.

Stay with me here. Let's say that we make the death award to fallen soldiers 1.5 million. Now, we all agree that just like all government jobs, it is voluntary. It happens to be the most hazardous of the jobs, so they should get the least since they know going in what the deal is.

On the other end of the spectrum is a clerk for a city manager in Lake Bluff, Montana. Since the expectation of death is so much lower, the shock to the family is so much higher, thus a higher payout.

My plan would go something like this:

Government workers in small towns: 4 mil per death.

Government workers in medium size towns: 3.7 mil

Government workers in big cities: 3.3 mil

Large machinery operators working for the government: 3.0 mil

Government workers painting lines on the roads: 2.6 mil

Police officers: 2.3 mil

Firemen: 1.9 mil

Military: 1.5 mil

I realize that this list isn't comprehensive, but i think i'm onto something here!

If you really want to do this. Offer live Insurance programs. Give a certain amount. Let them buy more at reduced rates. Hell basic companies offer this. Mind did. I got 100 grand no charge. Could buy up to 500 grand at reduced rate. Term insurance of course. But they can design it to have at least a smaller amount that you can take with you when you leave the job. My companies was 35000. Or when you retire a fix amount for life. My companies was 25000. However when i did retire for a reduced rate I could keep the 100 grand. It's so cheep I would have been a fool not to. so there are ways other then just here you died this is money for family. Chit cover everyone. It can be done. And there are insurance companies that would be in there bidding like nuts.

Its 16 bucks a month for $250,000.

I'd say that is pretty good.

Life insurance is designed to replace the income lost when the breadwinner dies until a suitable replacement income can be found.

Just because someone in your household dies does NOT mean that the rest of the household should never have to work again. You think the economy is crap right now? what do you think would happen if everybody started getting millions for doing nothing?
No one would work. Thats it. Yea you could buy a lot of crap with that money, but then 2 years down the road, there ain't gonna be nuthin left to buy cuz there is no one around to make it!

Oh, and here's something that will absolutely blow your mind: I consider the hard-core environmentalists and the PETA folks to be whackjobs, generally speaking.

I was talking about the armchair Generals here and elsewhere that actually get excited about going to war from the comfort of their couch, not actual Generals.

I'm aware of the stress of officers and everybody else. I was in Korea with the 2nd ID in 93 and 94 when we were on constant alert and *this* close to going to war.

We have a volunteer army. Let me say it slowly......VOL-LEN-TEER.

That means people sign up for service. They know they may be killed, it's part of the job. So, maybe because of the increased risk and the value of their service they should have discounted insurance.....oh wait, they do!

I don't see what else the soldiers need except financial planning.

Yes, you were supposed to pay insurance to guard against this happening. Yes, you will have to go to work. There are many single mothers in this country that have to struggle without insurance and the benefit of having love for a portion of their lives. Besides, those kids have a free ride to college and medical benefits so there are two less bills you have to pay.

You have a right to you opinion. These brave men fight for your right to be wrong. I just wish you would listen to the other side.

Marine glad to see our military can purchase insurance. I dont remember it being possiable way back. The price is good. If I had the chance to vote on it. And they wanted to add another 250 grand. I would say hell yes. I only say that because depending on where you live in the USA. The amount you get could go real fast.

You can't fight the fact that dying is a part of living. I would agree that the serviceman who dies in combat is entitled to a little more than they get, but we need to be realistic, too.

The sad fact of war, is that the soldier is the cheapest, and most abundant resource. The cost of one sortee is higher than the price paid to a soldier's family.

Yes, the family should be better compensated, but we can't go nuts, either.
