Ever wonder about the term "Dead Heat"in
relation to horse racing. During the mid - 19th century, wealthy horse owners would stage match races or short field events and wager anything from money to Farms, Plantations and even funding Civil War battles. They would have four to six mile races in two mile heats, resting in between.They'd then estimate the time of the heat and if the horses reached the heat close to the time agreed on, the wager would be cancelled or dead for that heat.
