Either Hansel Izquierdo or Michael Tejera is expected to start in Josh Beckett's place on Sunday.



The Yankees appear to be leaning toward starting Sterling Hitchcock over Mike Thurman in Sunday's game against the Giants. Hitchcock is 3-2 with a 4.84 ERA in eight starts against the Giants, while Thurman is 2-2 with an 8.68 ERA in four starts. Manager Joe Torre said the presence of Barry Bonds in the lineup would play a role in his decision. Bonds is hitting .353 (6-for-17) with three homers and six RBI against Hitchcock and is 2-for-4 with one homer and two RBI against Thurman. ...

Tigers option RHP Greisinger to Class AAA Toledo

June 6, 2002

DETROIT (TICKER) -- The Detroit Tigers optioned pitcher Seth Greisinger,
who had missed the last two seasons, to Class AAA Toledo of the
International League on Thursday.

Greisinger was 2-2 with a 6.21 ERA in eight starts with Detroit since being
recalled from Class AA Erie on April 26. His did not receive a decision in his
last start Tuesday when he was tagged for four runs and five hits in 2 2/3
innings against the Boston Red Sox.

The 27-year-old Greisinger was the sixth overall pick in the 1996 draft and
showed promise as a rookie in 1998 when he went 6-9 with a 5.12 ERA in
21 starts. But after beginning the 1999 season in the minor leagues, he
underwent "Tommy John" surgery on his right elbow on June 15 and did not
pitch in 2000 or 2001.

The Tigers (21-36) will recall lefthander Mike Maroth from Toledo before
Friday's game against the Philadelphia Phillies.

Maroth, who was 8-1 with a 2.82 ERA in 11 starts with Toledo, is slated to
start Sunday against the Phillies.

Mike Mussina is now scheduled to start Friday night against the Giants. Ted Lilly will pitch Saturday and Roger Clemens is set for Sunday.

Rodrigo Lopez will start tomorrow for the Orioles.

Brandon Duckworth, who was scheduled to pitch Thursday night, will now start Sunday instead of Terry Adams. Friday's starter remains Vicente Padilla.


With tonight's game getting rained out, Ryan Dempster is now scheduled to start on Friday.
