Another year has come and gone. Time to start a fresh thread for the Reading Log.

Keep track of what you are reading in this thread. Feel free to rate, recommend, and/or review them.

Once again, I want to put time into learning Spanish, so that may interfere with my reading. Said the exact same thing last year and didn't learn a single word.

Here we go again. I hope I do better this year.

Completed my goal of 50 books last year on Jan. 1 (ok, one day late, but I'll take it...) Goal is 60 this year. 18 in so far this year...a little behind right now.

Notables so far:

Shantaram (perhaps the best novel I have ever read, based loosely on author's autobiography - AMAZING)

Really enjoying David Sedaris books - hilarious if you need a light funny read, Seinfeld-esque

Read a few books on Buddhism and Zen (Alan Watts and Eckhart Tolle)

Read two Jeffrey Eugenides books - instant classics!

It's been around awhile, but just read Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential. A good read if you like his tv shows. His writing is identical to his satirical narration.

Stephen King - 11/22/63. Much different theme for him and well worth the read

Got this on my short-list.

I'm reading Platform by Michel Houellebecq.
Quirky French novel examining Western tourist behavior and sexual tourism. It's fiction and has a few interesting insights into the nature of man vs. woman, Westerner vs. Easterner, and just humanity in general.

Nuts...

I know we have our differences,

more than likely you are at least 6" taller than me and don't need a step stool to get the crock pot from the top of the fridge.

anyways....

a few I think you might enjoy?

Medicinal Plants of he Dsert and Canyon West

Michael Moore, no not that MM, I can't imagine him in the woods foraging for an edible plant. Foraging thru a buffet, yes.

Food Security fo the Faint of Heart
Gardening for the Faint of Heart

Robin Wheeler

Both of these books ARE NOT "OH SHIT" books, very helpful and informative on gardening, DUH ! canning, pickling and other ways to preserve food.

There are many other DIY books I have read that are very informative and Earth/Green Friendly.

I'm learning a lot, retaining....
Jug is full !

Great sites

Missed your last post, Lumi. Thanks for thinking of me. I'll take a look.

Just finished:

The Art of the Short Game, by Stan Utley

My short game still blows, but I'm getting better. The best part of the book is the end, where he sums all the lessons up in 7 pages under the appropriate heading. If you are interested in this book, just read that and spare yourself some of the filler.

George RR Martin's Series Game of Thrones

This is the next thing on my reading list. I am not big into fantasy, but I have heard such good things that I need to check it out...

Been reading a lot of Gabriel Garcia Marquez books lately - always classic reading. Forgot to mention in my last post that the Steve Jobs biography is a great read. Other good books lately -

Field of Dead Horses, Nick Brown
A Fine Balance, Rohinton Mistry
The Book on the Taboo Against Knowing Who You Are, Alan Watts

I read the first two Shades of Grey books. Horrible - can't even be called literature. Not sure how they are so popular - I guess this speaks to the dumbness of American culture. I definitely felt like a stoopid moran during and after.

Balls Deep
In Defense of Food- Michael Pollen

Knocked it out in 2 days, was redundant but the main points deliver...sobering view of government and sciences influence in the food industry and how it's led to many of our ailments today.

I also picked up his book The Omnivore's Dilemma, hope to knock it out by the time my wife and kids get back Sunday afternoon.

Although all of these books can get a bit redundant like you point out, I also recommend "The Way We Eat: Why Our Food Choices Matter" by Peter Singer and Jim Mason if you like the Pollan books. He comes at it with a bit of a different perspective, which is interesting. And as one of the most controversial living philosophers and a brilliant mind, I respect his views.

My favorite "food" book is "Animal, Vegetable, Miracle" by Kingsolver. Amazing book and narrative, and really gives you a whole new perspective on food. Definitely inspiring!

Just finished this one. Since I listen to Carolla's podcast, I've heard most of the stories, so I didn't care for it as much as his first book.

He's hilarious. I will read his first book if that one is better. I was just looking for a funny book to read - have been reading some heavy stuff (Elephant Whisperer and Babylon's Ark). Amazing books and must reads in my opinion. Animals are truly amazing. People, well...

Was looking to read another David Sedaris book, but I will check out Carolla.
