Well it's been 10 days since the Super Bowl and almost 4 weeks since my Purple were flogged in NFC title game and have since lost the offensive coordinator but have replaced him with Philly QB coach, meanwhile in Green Bay the Packers have did some house cleaning replacing GM Ted Thompson (who I have been crushing for years despite ridicule) and defensive coordinator Dom Capers plus a couple other coaches. Both teams will need big off seasons to be able to compete for the division and possibly a Super Bowl. If you look at the opponents for next year, this division is in for just a brutal schedule for 2018.
Let's start with my team, Vikings have big issues st QB, who the hell is going to be the QB next year? Bradford, Teddy and Keenum are all free agents and then you have Cousins and McCarron sitting there as unrestricted free agents. The Vikes have plenty of cap room to get who they want. It all will depend on price, will Cousins do what he says? Play for less to win. If he would accept 25 mill or less I would take him, anything over and say good luck. Also Keenum will depend on price as well, will there be a big suitor offering him big money? Then there is Teddy who will be the most affordable but will his leg snap like a twig? How mobile is he? My guess in Vikings fashion they stick with Teddy, GM Spielman drafted Teddy and they love the guy, Spielman has a history of sticking with guys he drafted ie: he forced Frasier to play Chrisitian Ponder for far too long and was unwilling to give up on him.
Outside of QB the Vikes are going to need to address offensive line, starting right guard Mitch Berger will retire, left guard Nick Easton went down with broken ankle and is a restricted free agent (they will resign) and center Pat Elflein went down against Philly with a broken ankle as well but both will be ready by May but you can see the depth was a weak spot against the Eagles as they moved right tackle to left guard and the right tackle replacement was just awful. I would like them to draft a linemen with either the 1 or 2 pick and address the depth via free agency.
Second the Vikes have to find a some corner backs. Rhodes is really good but even though Trae Waynes improved, he struggled against good second receivers, the Vikes dime and nickle package is just a joke. Terrence Newman is over 40 and McKenzie Alexander who they drafted in the second round of 2016 draft is just terrible, Maybe he will improve but I wouldn't count on it.
Third they sure could use a DT to play up next to Linval Joseph, they need a little more push up front. All in all the Vikings are in a good position cause they have 57 million in cap space at the moment. It's nice to be adding instead of subtracting. Hopefully the offensive linemen and RB Dalvin Cook come back totally healthy.
Now for Green Bay, we all know what happened last season, Rodgers going down put an early end to any Super Bowl hopes they had, but I think his injury was a blessing in disguise. This was the WAKE UP CALL. I have been telling you guys that this team has been underachieving for years, shouldn't be happy with division titles and playoff appearances. This team should be Super Bowl or bust every year and now I think they will be on the right track for Rodgers to finish his career with another Super Bowl victory.
The Packers are roughly 20 million under the cap but they have several holes to fill. They need offensive line help and their defense needs an upgrade at corner, linebacker, and a edge pass rusher. The bright spot they have is Martinez at linebacker really shined. Packers also have tough decisions to make regarding option players in Cobb, Bulaga, Matthews, and Nelson to name a few. Also will they resign safety Burnett, I would personally offer pay cuts to the first four and those who balk say good bye and save yourself a ton of cap room.
I think the Packers biggest needs of the ones I mentioned were edge pass rusher and linebackers. They could have drafted AJ Watt last year and Eric Kendricks a few years ago instead drafted Rollins and King... UFFDA, it was Ted's time to go. I have to get back to work cause this has taken too long but will get back to it soon but bottom line Dix Daniels and Martinez are all good players and they have potential in Rollins and King but they need to overhaul the rest. Lowry and Ryan should just be backups and the Packers also need to avoid the injury bug that plagues them year after year.
