Trade winds swept into Mission Valley yesterday, one day after general managers Kevin Towers and Walt Jocketty watched the Padres-Cardinals game in Towers' box.
The sides discussed a five-player deal, whereby the Padres would get outfielder J.D. Drew and pitcher Bud Smith, and the Cardinals would get pitcher Brian Lawrence, Class AAA pitcher Dennis Tankersley and outfielder Bubba Trammell.
The Cardinals also targeted pitcher Brett Tomko.
After Smith shut out the Padres for seven innings yesterday, one of his teammates jokingly told him, "Showcase, showcase."
Said Towers: "I get the impression Walt has got several irons in the fire. I think he's further along with a lot of clubs than he is with us."
Trammell is guaranteed $7.5 million total for 2003-04. Towers has said Xavier Nady will be in left field in 2003. The Padres introduced Trammell into trade talks with the New York Mets this past offseason.
Trammell was on the bench yesterday, one day after popping out with runners on second and third in the ninth inning with one out and the score tied. The Cards won 2-1 in 10th.
