Bailey memory lives in deeds for kids

Anyone who had the privilege of playing hockey with Garnet ``Ace'' Bailey can tell you how good it was to be on his team.

There was a benefit at the Radisson Hotel last night that will go a long way toward realizing the dreams of Bailey's wife, Kathy, his son, Todd, and other family members and friends. They have launched the Ace Bailey Children's Fund to benefit the Floating Hospital For Children at the New England Medical Center.

Bailey was a passenger on United Flight 175 on Sept. 11 when it was taken over by terrorists and crashed into the South Tower of the World Trade Center in New York. Bailey, director of pro scouting for the Los Angeles Kings, was traveling with Kings scout and Massachusetts native Mark Bavis.

``He was probably the most likable guy I ever met in my life,'' Bruins assistant coach and former B's teammate Wayne Cashman said of Bailey. ``He had a way about him that, sooner or later, he was going to make you laugh or smile and feel good. He was a good guy to be around.''

The goal of the fund is to memorialize Bailey in a fitting manner. Known for his love of children, Bailey's legacy in the endeavor will be as a teammate to children who need help, who need to smile, who need to feel good. It seems as if Bailey was chosen for this mission.

The fund is dedicated to the well-being of children undergoing medical care and will initially focus on two areas:

``Ace's Place.'' There will be play areas within the hospital that will be developed or renovated by the Fund to make them welcoming, creative, educational and fun, reflecting Bailey's personality. Directed play is essential for hospitalized children to help them understand medical procedures and hopefully become more at ease and better able to deal with illness.

The Child Life Service Program will provide support services to the hospital play areas through additional staffing to keep the playrooms open every day and, through the establishment of a volunteer program, staff all play areas.

Once those projects are completed, the fund will attempt to establish an endowment to keep the play areas staffed, maintained and supplied.

``Ace and I were together a long time,'' Cashman said. ``We had a lot of fun. But he was a very important part of our hockey team. You know we had our great players who were our leaders, the Orrs, the Espositos, the Cheevers and Bucyks, but we needed this one guy who, when it was the right time, could make the team get loose and do some things.

``It seemed that Ace and Johnny Pie (McKenzie) were the guys who could do that. Ace was also a guy who scored big goals for us. He backed up the joking around with a goal. When a guy can do that for a hockey club . . . .''

Johnny Bucyk, captain of the Stanley Cup-winning Bruins teams for which Bailey played in 1970 and '72, recalled how much fun it was to be around Bailey.

``He was a real character. He was great in the dressing room,'' Bucyk said.
