In checking out your Madjacks homepage, I came across your list of recommended reading. Listed you have "Holdem Poker for advanced players" by David Sklansky. I have his 1st Holdem poker book, I've read it 2 or 3 times, probably going to read it again real soon, because you pick up things everytime you read it.

I Love the game, only played it in a casino once to get my feet wet, but I do play it occasionally with friends (not the same). I am trying to gain experience playing before playing for serious money (due to the fact there are so many intricacies to the game)

Recently I started playing on the internet, on sites where you can play for real or play money, I have only played with play money so far. Due to the fact that it is play money, it is not always realistic play. They do however have Tournaments in the play money section that are pretty close to the real thing, because people are trying to win the tourney.

I was curious about the "advanced" book. The first book seems to get pretty well into the game and I was wondering about the 2nd one, it must get into some minute stuff. I plan on getting the "advanced" book, but I was interested in your thoughts and comments on the book and the game in general...

P.S. I hope Bledsoe doesn't enjoy his Homecoming too much this weekend!!

Hey Blitz, sorry to have missed this. Just finished my last final. One more paper and its MBA city.

Is the advanced book worth it? Hmmm. Honestly, I dont know. If you have read the first book and have a good grasp of it, I would continue to play and practice. I would guess that the 2nd book will most benefit you once you have chomped on the first book and then put in some significant play. Otherwise I am not sure how much you will get out of it, and truthfully, it may not be worth it.

GO PATS! BOOOO DREWWWWW!

Not to intrude on the thread, but Blitz I think you will find playing in lower limits, limit hold'em online would give you a lot of cheap experience playing hold'em online.

Poker.com has .50/1.00 limit games of hold'em and even $5 tournaments (although I would recommend the $10 game as you are paying the house the same $1 for the privilege). And from there you can gradually move up to the amount you feel most comfortable at.

WSEX.com also offers some decent low limit games and since it gets a lot sports betting players you can have some interesting chat discussion, and some of them aren't as focused on poker as sports so you might have a little more advantage.

Playing in some real money games generally helps ones development, and playing online makes this cheap on convenient.

All the best with your poker playing - lakerfan

I'll add a few thoughts here, if you don't mind.

I have had my run-ins with David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth, but so far as the dispersment of poker advice, just about everything they write can be taken to the bank. You will be undoubtedly a better poker player if you read (and gnerally follow) the guidelines they discuss in their books.

So far as HOLDEM FOR ADVANCED PLAYERS this is a MUST READ if you plan on playing in a casino and have any interest in taking the game to a level beyond kitchen table poker. If you play $10-20 or higher, or have any aspirations of doing so, if you DO NOT read this book, you are likely to be one in a minority of players who has not read this poker book. For that reason alone, you better try to understand what others are thinking. While I believe winning holdme goes FAR BEYOND the concepts discussed in this book, I do strongly suggest readiong this book if you have any ambition of playing holdem at a competitive level for profit.

This is unquestionably one of the top five poker books ever written.

PS -- Try to get the 20th Century edition if possible, instead of the version first published in 1987.

Nolan long time no see, hope all is well.

Agree that anything S+M put out is pretty much required reading for poker players. I guess my only point was that if you arent going to be playing, or havent yet played, in a casino (I think Blitz has played once), the first book will get you well on your way and the Advanced book will help you along once you know enough about the flow of the live game to be able to identify what they are talking about.
