Maybe they were exercising their free opinions in supporting World War II just as a lot of people today were exercising their free opinions in denouncing the most recent Iraqi war.

could be, Nick, but I still think it's a powerful message. Could u imagine Tom Cruise or Richard Gere enlisting as a private so he could serve in the Gulf War?? Think about it.

Good post Six. They said that after Pearl Harbor alot of actress/actors ran out to enlist or see how they could help. After 9/11 and the recent war most actress/actors ran to their agents to see what kind of movie they could make about the attacks and the war. A disgrace!

You make a good point, Six. It is a very powerful message, I will say that. Obviously it's a much different situation. Pearl Harbor was an attack against the U.S. There was no Iraqi attack against the U.S., nor even the threat of an attack. Also, I believe (but could be wrong) that a draft was initiated for WWII so it is possible that some folks were forced to serve. Again, I am not sure about that.

I guess I shouldn't be so contradictory all the time. I just hate to see today's actors painted with a negative brush when the situations are very different.

Nick close to the same then as now. Many Congressman, Senators, and well to do kids got to run and hide. Either college or some other important job. Like Junior. We had alot skip Nam.
Seem after world War II the change started with Korea and much more for Nam. This mess were in now im not sure what to call it.
War was declared over. But we keep lossing men almost everyday there has been one. And yes the draft can make big differance. But some how the same kids escape.

i`d put a helluva lot more credence in what the "hollywood types' have to say if it were true personal conviction and not just politics........

find me one of these yo-yo`s that said one peep about clinton`s bombing escapades and i`ll rethink my position....pure politics....not an honest one in the lot.....groupthink....politics pure and simple...

btw....thanks for posting this....quite a few surprises there....what a difference a generation makes....

but,it shows why this country has become the most prosperous and most revered.....also the most resented and despised.....

i don`t like the lakers or the yankees....many feel the same way..success and prosperity does that.....it goes with the territory...

i don`t think the prior generation gets enough credit for providing us with this land o` plenty....everything seems to be taken for granted.....everyone involved with their own little selfish political philosophy and self interest....

again, thanks for posting....what a great generation or two that spawned us...........our fathers, mothers and grandparents......really special people........

Great post 6'5"!
Nick. I think even if the US were attacked, a lot of the Hollywood types would still make excuses- IMO. I could be very wrong, just don't think they are sincere. And Nick, if I were you, I wouldn't want to give up USC, a babe girlfriend and the lifestyle for something I didn't believe in. At least you are being honest and straightforward. Can't ask for more than that.
My wife would love to be a citizen so I guess I take a more conservative approach as I've seen so much taken for granted or abused & wasted.

Not an actor, but what about Ted Williams? A lot of non-sports people who know he was one of if not the greatest hitter of all time, dont know that he interupted his baseball career not once but twice to serve in the military, flying jets in WWII and Korea.

Can you imagine an athlete in any sport giving up a Hall of Fame career TWICE to serve in the military? I can only think of one, that AZ Cardinals player who isnt HOF material, but its still something you just wont see today.

Gene Hackman and Harvey Keitel are both former Marines if i'm not mistaken and doubt they would be the stereotype Hollywood actor/actress of today.

It all started to change big time with Nam. It just wasn't the actors and congressman kids. But many used the congress kids as there out to go to Canada and Mexico. Were talking 1000's. I new a couple from my town. I say to them till this day. Go get Fu??ed. I know in away im wrong. I also know im to act my age. But sorry fu??-em. I lost one Very Close Friend there and several others that were friends. And one dam good 1st cousin.
This is why you here me many times guestion us going to war anyplace. Make dam sure it's really really needed. It's not some dam game.
