PHILADELPHIA (CP) ?The Philadelphia Flyers acquired veteran centre Adam Oates from the Washington Capitals Tuesday to partially offset the loss of injured centres Jeremy Roenick and Keith Primeau.
Flyers GM Bobby Clarke mortgaged the future to get the 39-year-old Oates, sending to Washington his team?s first, second and third picks in this June?s entry draft, as well as goaltending prospect Maxime Ouellet of Beauport, Que., who twice represented Canada at the world junior championships.
?We didn?t plan on trading Adam Oates 24 hours ago,?said Caps GM George McPhee. ?But when Philadelphia lost Jeremy Roenick to an injury last night, they had a need for a play-making centre. Given Adam?s unrestricted free-agent status, it was uncertain if he was going be a Capital next year.
Oates is a premier playmaker. He was in fourth place in the NHL scoring race with 68 points including a league-high 57 assists before Tuesday?s games.
The Toronto native, earning $1.75 million (U.S.) this season and eligible for unrestricted free agency July 1, has Hockey Hall of Fame numbers ?327 goals and 1,020 assists ?in his 17 years in the league. Philadelphia is his fifth NHL team.
Roenick and Primeau were hurt during a 3-3 tie Monday night with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Roenick will be sidelined for at least two weeks, and Primeau at least a week while their teammates, now bolstered with the addition of Oates, battle for first place in the Eastern Conference.
Ouellet, 20, was 16-13-8 with a 2.72 goals-against average and .911 save percentage with the AHL?s Philadelphia Phantoms this season.
?This trade gives us an opportunity to develop a young goalie and helps us prepare for the future with the Flyers?first-, second- and third-round picks in this year?s draft,?said McPhee.
