All right, guys. Show me your...er...knowledge.

American Standard 14 Seer

or

Goodman 14 Seer.

Difference is about $700 bucks in price. Will probably be in the house no more than two years, then will probably keep as rental.

I believe American Standard is rated higher in Consumer Reports. Anyone who works in this area, please advise which is better and why. I need to order in the next couple of days.

Thanks!

Thanks, guys. My only concern is in the Consumer Reports ratings, it showed Goodman as having the absolute worst ratings when it comes to repairs.

Thanks for your input.

Hey Kelly....Do you have to chose between the American Standard 14 Seer and Goodman 14 Seer or could you go with a different brand if you want?

Columnist and engineer James Dulley reports on significant changes, including much higher SEER efficiency ratings and a new ozone-friendly R-410A refrigerant. Models using the old Freon R-22 have until 2010 to upgrade to the new technology. Dulley gives special attention to the Bryant Two Speed Puron Plus with a 16.5 SEER rating, and the Trane XL19i with a SEER rating of 19.5 and a ten-year warranty on the compressor, coil and parts. Also highlighted is the extremely quiet operation of the American Standard Allegiance 16 as well as the Amana Prestige Ultra. As a mechanical engineer, Dulley prefers the two-stage scroll compressor because of its efficiency and simplicity of design.
2. American Council for an Energy Efficient Economy

5/21/2004 reviews rating The American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy lists the most efficient air conditioners by size, or cooling capacity, which is given either in tons or BTU/hr (1 ton=12,000 BTU/hr). Three-ton machines are most common, but ACEEE says it's important to size units appropriately for particular conditions. These include not only the size of the home but also climate, shade and ventilation. The highest-efficiency models listed here include the American Standard Allegiance 18, which tops the list in all ranges except the 2-ton range where it does not offer a product. Other high-performing models include the Rheem RAPB in the 2-ton category, and the Amana Prestige Ultra and the Carrier Two Speed w/Puron in the 2.5- and 3-ton categories.

Kelly,
Friend of mine owns an A/C business. I would highly discourage the purchase of a Goodman, poor quality, poor support and a poor warranty for the most part. The AS is by far the better unit while you can also look at other units such as a trane etc. I, personally, would avoid the Goodman. But then again what the hell do I know, I have been gone on a hunting trip for the last week trying to stalk and kill the ever allusive Brazilian spitting family tabby according to Gardenweasel so what the hell do I know.

Kel,
You need my number yet?

Hope this helps

The three choices were AS, Ruud and Goodman, at at 13, 14 and 15 Seer, respectively. My house is pretty small. Based off Consumer Reports I have decided to go with AS 14 Seer. Looks to be the better quality product, definitely lower on repairs according to CR.

Even though I don't play on being there too much longer, I'll probably keep as a rental so I want a good quality product that will last.

Thanks everyone for your input.

FDC - not yet, but you never know!!

Luv - thanks for the post. It confirms for me AS is the way to go. Who knows, in the end, maybe there's not much real difference, but I feel better going with the better rated one.
