Zips quarterback suspended over violation of team rules

Sophomore Matt Rodgers to start against Indiana

Chris Jacquemain, the starting quarterback at the University of Akron, has been suspended for Saturday's game against Indiana at InfoCision Stadium.

Jacquemain, a senior, was suspended indefinitely for an unspecified violation of team rules. Neither university nor team officials would comment about the suspension.

Sophomore Matt Rodgers will replace Jacquemain and will make his first college start.

Jacquemain, a three-year starter, also was suspended in 2007 for a game against Bowling Green for a violation of team rules.

Jacquemain has completed 26-of-44 passes for 320 yards and four touchdowns in the first two games of the season, a 31-7 loss at Penn State and a 41-0 home victory over Morgan State.

His passing efficiency rating of 145.6 ranks him 40th nationally, out of 120 teams.

Rodgers has played sparingly in the first two games, but his scrambling ability actually has him leading the team in rushing with 65 yards on six attempts. Reserve tailback Dale Martin, who will miss the Indiana game with an injury, is second with 64 yards on six carries.

Rodgers has completed 3-of-8 passes for 24 yards.

In 2008, Rodgers appeared in two games, but did not attempt a pass. He ran twice for one yard.

Rodgers was redshirted as a freshman in 2007 and played behind Jacquemain in 2008.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Rodgers played at Seton LaSalle High School in Pittsburgh.

As a senior in 2006, he completed 110-of-190 passes for 1,565 yards and 20 touchdowns. In 2005, as a junior, he completed 153-of-267 passes for 2,060 yards and 20 touchdowns.

His backup against Indiana will be either redshirt freshman walk-on Jared Wackerly, a North Canton Hoover graduate, or freshman Patrick Nicely from Willoughby South.

This is confirmed to be true. While out for dinner tonight I received a call from a friend at UA that told me the same.

I played this game heavy, Made a big bet on the over at 45. I don't think that I'm going to buy much if any of it back either. I was never a great fan of CJ. He does not make good reads and throws too many interceptions. I think Rodgers will hold his own. He has better legs than CJ so he can, at times, make something out of nothing with his scrambling ability.

The main concern for me would be depth if rodgers would happen to get hurt.

Thanks for the timely post Al
