Al Michaels' U-turn led to arrest on DUI allegations, police say

Famed NBC sportscaster Al Michaels was arrested on drunk-driving allegations after making a U-turn next to a DUI sobriety checkpoint, officials said.

A longtime announcer on NBC's "Sunday Night Football," Michaels was arrested about 10 p.m. Friday in Santa Monica, booked into jail and released on his own recognizance early Saturday.

Michaels is scheduled to appear in L.A. Municipal Court at 8:30 a.m. June 26.

"He was evaluated for suspicion of DUI, brought to the station for a Breathalyzer test, and it came out 0.08%, which was at the legal limit, so he was released on a citation at about 3 or 4 in the morning," Santa Monica police Sgt. William Heric told City News Service. "He was cooperative and polite the whole time.''

Sgt. Richard Lewis told USA Today: "He makes an illegal U-turn in a business district. ... Two motor officers see that. They're staged in a gas station lot. They see the illegal U-turn, and they go after him."

Greg Hughes, a spokesman for NBC Sports, told Associated Press that the network had been "in contact with Michaels." Hughes declined to elaborate.

.08 is such a joke ... I know its the law and I do not support drunk driving at all but you can be at that amount without any kind of buzz at all

Somebody should bring a breathalyzer to the madjacks outing in Tunica. Would be very entertaining, but on second thought, it would be dangerous. I can see betting now on who can get the highest level without passing out. :mj07:

I'd bet the cops took him to the station for the breathalyzer so he'd have less alcohol in his system with the additional passage of time. If they'd have given him the test on the road it would definitely have been higher. Also, if it came in at .08 at station I'm guessing they may have rounded down a bit. I know I'd give him a pass...
