I have only watched the first two, of five, episodes but I can't contain myself and herein seems as good a place as any. I may append the following comments once I have managed to suffer through the final three episodes.
There is little that I can praise but I must begin by saying that the short bio pieces that they do on some team members are mildly interesting, or at least bearable. They could have done a series of short, 3-5 minute bio clips and been done with it.
From what I have seen, this docuseries is plagued by:
-many phony/staged scenes
-poor selection of highlights
-rather profanity-plagued editing of live scenes, with a particular emphasis on Sheldon Keefe
Believe you me, I have no problem with profanity. I, myself, would be on Satan's side of the bell curve for cursing coercively. I believe that it is just a way to use punctuation without deafening the listener. There is a time and a place and it must have purpose; just ask George Carlin.
The poor selection of highlghts becomes quite clear to any viewer while the phony nature of many scenes is what most turns me off of this series. Basically, what I figure is summarized below:
1. This series is insulting to Maple Leafs fans.
2. This series is insulting to hockey fans.
3. This series is insulting to sports fans.
I have no idea who is supposed to benefit from watching this. Sports fans, as mentioned, does not seem like the target audience. I came in to my experience qualifying for all of 1,2, and 3 so I am rather baffled by this Twilight-Zonish encounter with reality. I emplore anybody who achieved entertainment value from this series to please voice your opinion.
A later episode apparently gets into all the nightmare stuff with Tavares' injury and Campbell's upset scene in the playoffs, but I have yet to see how they mangle all that but who knows? Maybe, like some novels, this can still be saved. I would fade that proposition were Vegas to take my play.
Speaking of playoffs, I must add that my disdain for this series has nothing to do with being bitter over the season and the way it ended for the Maple Leafs. I have been a Leafs fan for close to 50 years (I'm 53) and I have experienced way more severe disappointments than this past go-down provided.
Hats off to Matthews for doing his side interviews without a mask. Many others chose to wear them--in often seemingly safe situations.
I'm outta here.
Not recommended.
