alternative cancer treatments?

I had a friend die of (lung) cancer about 7 months ago. Another friend of mine is currently on route to the hospital for a third surgical procedure to remove a cancerous growth from his bladder (not exactly the bladder but some tube that connects to the bladder).

I've done some of my own research, and this second friend has done quite a bit as well. We've come across some information suggesting such preventative measures as increasing vitamins A, C and (non-supplemental) D, as well as the strategy of increasing beta-carotine (sic?), which apparently transforms into one of these vitamins (D, I think), but I'd like to hear about any other suggestions.

Believe it or not, there are some preventative properties associated with the cannabinoids--not very well documented, and research in this area has not been well-funded, but the endocannabinoid system is another area to look into.

Apparently even drinking vegetable juice--V8 type stuff--can go a long way in helping in this regard, greatly due to what it can provide in the vitamins previously mentioned.

If anybody has heard of any good alternative approaches to cancer PREVENTION or--more unlikely--cancer ELIMINATION then I would like to hear about it.

On a personal note, due to the troubles encountered by these friends I am skeptically hoping that I might be able to quit smoking by my 40th birthday--coming this May 27th. Obviously, doing such would greatly enhance my own chances of avoiding such a ghastly fate. I am certainly interested in any information that might benefit my friend or anyone else that I might encounter in the future who develops such a horrible problem.

Prevention makes the most sense. I may or may not start to live more wisely. Elimination sounds more miraculous, to me, but anything suggested will be looked into and I will report what I come up with via any suggestions in this area.

Sorry for the length.
A serious matter, no doubt.
Perhaps some of you know more about potential Chinese remedies or other alternative appoaches that have been missed by me and mine.

Further, I understand that there are many different forms and kinds of cancer--e.g. the brainstem gliomas that have been recently discussed on the forum--but I am anxious to learn whatever I can on the entire topic.

My own choices are mine to bear.
Maybe others can benefit from whatever I might learn.

I don't have much time so I will type fast. I have worked with many patients with cancer and some oncologists.

You have mentioned a good start but this is what I have been told by some of them.

Vitamin essentials for cell repair and growth. A few companies have them.

Fish oil is good for the heart, but are also good for cells. The fish oil pill is big and hard to swallow though.

A regular daily allowance of vegetables and fruits significantly can decrease cancers of the gastrointestinal system.

There are many more and I will attempt to get a more expansive list... Tomorrow..

anybody else think the chemicals and hormones and such used in cattle/chicken and other livestock...not to mention insecticides and such used in the production of produce....is probably one of the major causes(or triggers) along with heredity(and smoking)?......

i went for a stress test recently, after having a spell of shortness of breath..had it on and off for a few weeks.....never happened before...i`m an avid exercise nut and try to stay in shape...

aced the stress test(it was much tougher than i anticipated....i wasn`t aware that they work you until you reach your target heart rate or failure, whichever comes first...in my case,my calves gave out,but the dr. seemed impressed that i pretty much finished level 4 considering i`m no longer a teenager)....

but......ever since the test,a test in which they injected an isotope to take pictures of my heart before and after the stress,i set off the shop lifting detectors at practically every store i go into and come out of....

it`s been about 3 weeks and i`m worried that this stuff stays in your system much longer than i`d like it to(i was told that i`d piss it out).....

that worries me...

The obvious preventitive measures are no tobacco, no alcohol, quality rest and stress relief. I mentioned a few in my previous post.. but here are more.

I have learned and been told the following:

Drinking 6 to 8 glasses or approximately 1 to 1.5 liters of water per day can greatly decrease cancers of the GI tract.

Having a healthy relationship with a good sex life. There are studies that show men who have this live longer.

Knowing your family history/genetics. Having a family member who has cancer can greatly increase your chances of having cancer. I worked with a lady who had a mother and sister both die of cancer. She never got a mammogram until she felt a lump and she was over 50. By then it was too late she died about 7 months later... So for men I would suggest getting a colonoscopy if you have history of colon or rectal cancer in your family.

Talk to your physician if you are worried about cancer. Men should have routine yearly exams over 50 and possibly 40. Have your prostate checked along with a PSA level. An elevated PSA level is detection of prostate cancer.

My grandfather (father's side) died of colon cancer. My dad goes for frequent colonoscopies and so far so good. I suppose that I'd be wise looking into particular ways to prevent this kind of cancer. Along with that cigarette bullshit.

Oh well.
Who wants to live forever?

I'm mostly looking to help friends and family.
Suits me fine to die by 65.
Likely be sooner.

I didn't realize that alcohol was a problem.
I thought red wine was supposed to be healthy, in moderation.

Don't you love the flexibility of words?

Actually, according to the current DSM, more than 14 drinks a week is "abuse."

Don't you love the freedom to reject dogma?

Sure need it around here.
