Jim,

If you hit your first drive into the woods, you may want to get rid of that Dr. Cary Middlecoff autograph, K-Mart Blue Light Special of a driver and get yourself something decent.

Time-the-fuhk-out!

You are calling them sandbaggers? For one.......I belive you can shoot in the 70's about as much as I believe you are from Boston. But, even if you did, your 12 handicap 75 is better than the other guys 71 with a seven handicap!

nothing new. Golf tournaments are full of players with bs handicaps. The only way to have a fair shake is if you are a scratch golfer and win. I've seen 15 handicaps shoot under par:rolleyes: so nothing really suprises me.

Scrambles are horrible for cheaters too. I've seen 4 hacks bring in -16 before. How can you prove they cheated though when u know they did??

I'll disagree with yyz, I think I 12 shooting a 75 is a lot more plausible than a 7 shooting par. Those last 5 strokes are easily the toughest to cut off a score.

Many people just get their club pro who is a brother-in-law or highschool buddy to give them an inflated handicap. Tons of these jokers never turn in a card to start with.

I don't know sixfive............

A USGA Handicap Index compares a player?s scoring ability to the scoring ability of an expert amateur on a course of standard difficulty. A player posts scores along with the appropriate USGA Ratings to make up the scoring record. A Handicap Index is computed from no more than 20 scores plus eligible Tournament Scores in the scoring record. It reflects the player?s potential because it is based upon the best scores posted for a given number of rounds, ideally the best 10 of the last 20 rounds.

It reflects the player?s potential because it is based upon the best scores posted for a given number of rounds, ideally the best 10 of the last 20 rounds.

Now, the better golfer (lower handicap), will have less of a varience between the high and low scores. In essence, he is a more consistent golfer. A golfer's handicap is often misunderstood by the majority of players. Most assume (wrongly) that the handicap is the average score that the golfer will shoot over par. That's close, but there is a mathimatical formula that determines your handicap as it relates to the difficulty of the course.

At any rate, if you did simplify the equation to mean that your handicap is that many strokes over par, it still would not mean it is the average score that golfer gets per round. A golfer is expected to hit on or below his 'handicap' once every four rounds. That's right........you will hit your target handicap only 25% of the time.

Now, if you factor in the fact that you only compute the best 10 of 20 rounds, your "average score" will be well beyond what your actual handicap is. (Plus, USGA requirements don't allow for you to post a score beyond a certain point on your scorecard for posting purposes.) Our 12 handicapper cannot post more than a double bogey on any hole. Since the higher handicaped golfer is more likely to shoot those bad numbers, he is hindered in tournaments like this.

Personally, I am a 16 handicap, but I have plenty of holes where I have 7-9 strokes. Since I can't count 2-4 of those strokes towards my handicap, I am being penalized in tournaments. (No tourney will let you card the "maximum" USGA allowed strokes instead of your actual score!)

Back to our 7 vs 12 handicap:

If you were to average their scores based on all 20 rounds played, instead of the best 10, the 7 would average out better than 5 strokes better than the 12 almost every time.

I do concur with some of your thinking on this, though. I believe that you are trying to say that the better golfer has less room for improvement than the lesser golfer. This is most certainly true. But, in this range, I think a 7 shooting 72 is more likely than a 12 hitting a 75.

Think I have to go with 65, on this one yyz.

I've been between a 5 and a 7 for years and haven't sniffed a 71 since I was in college. You shoot a couple of 74s and 75s and no matter what the rest of those 20 rounds are (unless they're all higher than an 85), its gonna be hard for you to be above a 6.

Played with a 10 last week who shot 75.

Definitely easier for a 12 or 15 to shoot a net 63 than it is for a scratch golfer to. The higher the cap, the lower the net is gonna be for that flight. Rarely ever see it the other way around.
