"Letter To The Editor" from the Pittsburgh Post Gazette, Thursday, July 6, 2017 -
After 61 years of being immersed in the great American experience, I have never seen such confusion, anger, anxiety, hopelessness, resentment and vitriol displayed among my fellow citizens. And despite all of the recent patriotic flag-waving and fireworks, we have become a seriously divided and dysfunctional nation.
Our politics have devolved from the creative genius of great statesmen to the antics of a carnival sideshow; our media are a corporate-controlled, agenda-driven farce almost devoid of any true journalism; and our popular culture has sunk to such a level of debasement that it slithers like a vile serpent.
We have a phony economy that no longer produces anything. It has become completely financialized and predicated upon endless debt. And with millions of eligible Americans not participating in the labor force, it is unsustainable.
We gorge ourselves on junk food, pervert our minds with junk culture, dull our senses with drugs and alcohol and destroy our will to flourish. We have become fattened and sedated for the slaughter.
Great empires have always collapsed from within, so as 21st-century America willingly marches in this parade of insanity, we move ever closer to the precipice.
?We have met the enemy and he is us.?
