Rare Drug-Resistant HIV Found in NYC

NEW YORK - City health officials are working to track down sex partners of a man diagnosed with a rare strain of highly drug-resistant HIV (news - web sites) that progressed rapidly to AIDS (news - web sites).

The virus was found in a man in his mid-40s who had unprotected sex with other men, often while using crystal methamphetamine, an addictive stimulant, health officials said Friday.

"We are not aware of another case like this in the United States, or elsewhere," said Dr. Ron Valdiserri, deputy director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (news - web sites)'s National Center for HIV, STD, and TB Prevention.


Health Commissioner Dr. Thomas Frieden said the rare HIV strain is "difficult or impossible to treat."


The New York Times, citing a person familiar with the case whom it did not identify, reported Saturday that the man was believed to have had unprotected sex with hundreds of people.

Also, you have to be fair with AIDS. Yes, gays are heavily responsible for its spread. But where did it originate? With two things decried by liberals: pharmaceutical companies and animal testing. Again, I am not excusing the philanderous behavior of MANY gays, but we have to be fair here and lay blame where it deserves to be laid.

it "may" have happened in polio research in which researchers grew batches of vaccine from chimpanzee kidney cells....but i think that was refuted...

it is believed that the first analysis of a plasma sample from 1959 was interpreted as suggesting that HIV-1 was introduced into humans around the 1940s or the early 1950s, which was earlier than had previously been suggested.....other scientists have suggested that it could have been even longer, perhaps around 100 years or more ago.....

and( many researchers believe this theory), that HIV could have crossed over from chimpanzees as a result of a human killing a chimp and eating it for food......

but that doesn`t fit the agenda...
