Picked up a Samsung -S5053 plasma tv today. Now I have a couple of questions.

When I am watching local HD channels some of them are not in full screen. Is this normal? I hope not.

I can get sound to come out of my surround sound system when I use the FTA box (same as a cable box) but not when I am watching local channels. I hooked up a Optic cable from the tv to the reciever(Onkyo) so I thought the sound should come straight thru. Everything was working great on the tv I just replaced. I probably moved some cables I wasnt suppose to. Hoping someone here has a Onkyo reciever that can help me out.

On a side note. Absolutly love the tv. Last tv was 60" but not HD so I was a little worried about downsizing. Picture clarity more than makes up for the size difference.

When I was checking prices it was Best Buy..2700, Circuit City....$2500 and American in Milwaukee $2099. So the wife and I purchased it last night and told them that we would pick it up today. They called a few hours later and said the stand we wanted wasnt in stock. So this morning we went to Circuit City to look at stands. We saw that they would match any price plus 25%.(thats a $100 savings) The catch ended up being that they would only do it for the price American had on the internet. Believe it or not the price on the net went from $2099 to $2299 overnight. They matched the $2099 (we had the reciept with us) and then gave us $150 off the stand. Cancelled with American immediatly.

If you hooked up the optical cable, you have to assign the input to the receiver... I'm not sure how you hooked this up or what input...

I've never heard of a FTA box, and I'm pretty versed on this stuff...

Also, you can be watching an OTA digital channel that is not being broadcast in HD - and it would be in 4x3 format, not 16x9. During the week, only primetime shows (not all of them) are in HD - and only on the digital channels - like 6.1 (fox in Milwaukee). If you are still watching the analog 6, of course, it will never be in HD.

Thanks Mags
You were right on. As soon as the primetime channels came on it went to 16:9. Commercials went back to 4:3. Now if I can just pay attention to the show instead of looking at everything else in the background.

Going to have to try again with the optical cable again tommorow. Im figuring that I am just messing with it to much tonight so I cant see what is wrong. Hopefully it will look different tommorow.

no problem - HD TV is a wonderful thing. I was an early adopter, and am already on my 2nd bigscreen HD TV.

Are you in the Milwaukee area? I'm in the Hartland area - if you were close, I'm might be able to help you out if you needed it.....

I'm not sure where you are though...

Heaven, oh!!, this isn't it?!
Mags,
I'm in the market for a new HD also, and you seem to know alot. Currently looking at the Samsung SN-4695 or 4696 or the Sony XBR2 or 3 46". I have to have LCD with all the windows in my great room. Any thoughts or suggestions?...

Bubbas,
I also was wondering what the FTA box is myself, and thanks for the emails..........

hey mags has this ever happen to you? I have a 62 inch mitsu lcd. Last night the picture was tinted green. About four weeks ago it was tinted blue. It seems to fix itself when i shut if off for the night and turn it on in the morning. I'm wondering if this is a warning sign for things to come. Its about 6 months old. Last night i shut it off then turned it back on in five minutes and the green went away but it was blue. Now this morning it is back to normal.

Mags... I checked and saw I was about an hour from you. My system is working great now but if you ever want to see how the FTA works and are around Racine give me a shout.
