If you are embezzling, tax evading or any other type of thievery ... my advice as an upstanding accountant would be to not get caught.

:D

Just kidding ... post your ? or issue and I am sure myself or someone else here can help you.

I am not smart enough to try something like that without getting caught............remember I like sports wagering..........that right there tells you I am not that bright........

Now on to my question......Chain Saw and Lightning ....looking for advice........

I currently have my BS degree in Business Finance and was considering a career in Accounting..........what would be my best route to achieve this........

1) Do I need to go back to college and get my accounting degree
or do I have other options........

to take the CPA exam in my state it says I need 24 accounting class hours.......I completed 12 in my finance degree work(about 10 yrs ago so I dont know how much I remember)......so do I just go back and take 12 hrs of accounting classes and try to get a job after I complete this.........

or do I start work on my MBA and combine this with some extra accounting classes

Looking for my best route:confused:

I have taken some internet classes in the past couple of years and was pleasantly surprised how well I liked it......this would be much more preferable rather than having to go sit in a classroom for the next 3 years...........I seem to learn on my own rather well..

Not sure this answer will solve anything for you.

Alot depends on whether you want to be in public accounting or in industry. If you want to be in public accounting, I would suggest you take the quick route and get your accounting hours as soon as possible. I say that because if I read your last post right, you are probably in your thirties(took courses 10 Yrs ago).

Unless you know someone, most CPA firms shy away from hiring older people at the entry level. They want them young, impressionable, eager to please. Thirty something is way too old for the larger firms.

The above wouldn't matter if we were talking about a one man or a two partner firm.

Hell, I'd probably take the fast track even if I was going into the private industry sector.

If you're thinking about becoming an IRS agent, take your damn sweet time.

get your MBA with a focus in accounting..then take the CPA.

I don't think a firm can legaly deny you because of your age..

maverick,

i would recommend the mba route as most states are now going to a 150 hr. credit requirement.

i am writing the exam for the state of Arizona this year even though i currently live in Canada.

i have an exam with deloitte in phoenix in june but i might not be able to go.

currently, i work with a firm in my hometown (regional firm) and i am trying to find work in detroit, michigan area which is right across the border from where i live in canada.

i only have 1 year of accounting experience so i am having difficulty finding something....i was kind of surprised to get an interview in phoenix.

I agree ... go for the MBA first ... then if you still are interested and/or want to work in public accounting ... take the CPA.

These days an MBA seems to be a better option unless you want to be a CPA with the intention of working in public accounting.

For the record, I like sports betting too ... heck ... poker, BJ and most other forms of gambling ... maybe you shouldn't be listening to me ... I must not be that smart either.

PS. I started off in Accounting even though my BA is in Elementary Education. After student teaching, I decided it wasn't for me so I went back to my original major which was business with a focus on accounting.

I have hired and worked with "accountants" who had finance degrees. Why not try to obtain employment first as an accountant and see if you really like it. If you're lucky enough to latch on with a large employer many will pay a nice part of your education. If you find you like the accounting gig becoming a CPA is a must if you ever want to make the bigger bucks. This applies whether you're in public accounting or not. Good luck.

anybody who is an accountant or cpa has my admiration.

i started out as an accounting major in college.

when i was in collge we had these chairs with the attached desk wrapped around it. it was very small.

one time i was taking a midterm test & had so many papers & ledgers that i had to spread everything out on the floor of the classroom. i was actually taking the test lying on the class room floor. about mid-point i said to myself, "what the f... am i doing lying on the floor taking a test. i got up, gave the papers to the teacher & told him that i was switching majors & headed to the administration office & majored in management/ with marketing as a minor.

maverick good luck & hope you have better success that i did.

Thats funny..............last accounting class I took I had like a workbook that went along with the class and I remember having to go to like 7 different pages to plug in figures............I think thats why I switched from accounting to finance in the first place. Now I am wondering if I did the right thing but I do remember accounting being a mess of sorts.........

Yeah apply.

Look, I don't know your market and what the job situation is but it is not such a stretch for a finance major to work as an accountant. I've worked in several different states and many different firms from the largest in the country to smaller locals so I'm not just relating a one time experience. My first year in public accounting we had a guy who was one of our best accountants and he was a finance major.

Bottom line is you have to have some talent in accounting and while I personally am biased towards hires that have accounting degrees I have made exceptions. Take a shot. Accept entry level if your finances can afford it but I think you might save yourself a lot of time and expense if you can work as an accountant first.

P.S. Here's another secret for you......... Most of the "accounting" jobs can be capably handled by someone with a good understanding of the first levels of college accounting (basic and two classses of Intermediate). Which is why finance majors qualify.
