I was wondering if any of you have purchased a digicam lately. I was pretty set on getting the Canon s500 (5mpixel compact), but was debating between that and a sony. Anyone have this canon or similar products?

I'm really debating whether or not to go with 5 mp or 4. There is a big price difference. The canon s500 which is 5mp is abougt 400 bucks so after memory upgrade I amlooking at like 500 dollars. Really I will not be blowing most of these pics up to big sizes so the need for a 5mp cam is probably overkill. I guess that's what I'm trying to decide.

Dave,

that's what it comes down to, by no means am I an expert, but if you won't be blowing up many pics, you really wouldn't be able to tell the difference btwn a 4 or 5mp camera.
IMHO go with the 4mp and pocket the change!
BTW, merry x mas to you and family!

Do you want just a point and shoot? Or do you want to be able to control a little more?
How about a zoom lens does this matter?
Do you want any manual settings or just have the camera do all that?
You can't go wrong with cannon, they're a top brand.

Consumer reports rates the Canon Powershot A95 tops in the 5 MP catagory. I have not used this model but have used other Canon digital products and like the Canon line quite a lot.

This model will save you some cash as well.

I bought a Canon S410 online over the summer after weeks of research. The camera came with a standard 32 MB Compact Flash memory card, which wasn't quite enough memory for the amount of pictures my wife and I take in one outing. With a 512 MB card (got it for ~40 bucks at Fry's after a mail-in rebate), we can shoot at the high resolution and got excellent pictures. CostCo can print these for about 17 cents a photo.

There is enough option in the Canon S410 to accomodate any shooting situation. We seldom use the camera to its fullest capability (4 Megapixels) because we have to resize the pictures before posting them on the web. My sister owns an Olympus Camedia 5.0 Megapixels. I can say her camera is never set up to shoot pictures at its highest resolution. Unless you're going to print large size photos, I don't see the need for the 5 megapixel camera. It's like owning a Corvette but reside in Arlington, Texas. Hahaha... Sure the 'vette can get up to 60 m.p.h. in 5.4 seconds, but when do you ever feel the need to do that?

My suggestion is don't ponder too long with your decision. This is not like handicapping a Cowboys game. Just make a purchase. You can't really go wrong because you will have so much fun with your new camera.

Just an amateur's point of view.

Best of luck
