Change of plans
pitt review:
Left-hander Dave Williams originally was scheduled to start yesterday. Then, his start was pushed back until Monday because of the rainout Friday. Thanks to another last-minute change of plans, Williams could be starting today.
Williams could take the place of Josh Fogg, who was battling an ear infection yesterday. It's possible Fogg could be scratched from his start.
Uncertainty is nothing new for Williams. He hasn't pitched with the customary four days of rest since spring training.
"It's tough sometimes when you're not in a rhythm," pitching coach Spin Williams said. "Fortunately, he's had that extra rest and handled it well."
Extended rest
The postponement Friday was beneficial for a bullpen that had worked four innings in each of the previous three games. It also gave left-hander Mike Gonzalez another day to recover from his minor knee injury. Gonzalez had the knee heavily bandaged yesterday and was able to ride a stationary bike. He was available to pitch only in an emergency situation.

Pirates Notebook: Williams likely to replace Fogg as starter today

By Paul Meyer, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
CHICAGO -- Dave Williams is scheduled to start for the Pirates tomorrow night against Houston, although he could start today if Josh Fogg isn't healthy.
Fogg came down with an ear infection -- not like the one that has sidelined Milwaukee pitcher Ben Sheets -- and spent much time in the trainer's room yesterday before being sent back to the team's hotel.
Manager Lloyd McClendon said after the Pirates' 4-3 win against the Chicago Cubs yesterday that no decision has been made on whether Fogg or Williams will start today.
It seems likely, however, that Williams, a left-hander, will start.
Williams has made two solid starts this season.
"He's done a nice job," McClendon said. "You know, if you look at David's numbers before the injury, he was a pretty good pitcher for us on a real bad team. His numbers against left-handers were just phenomenal."
As a rookie in 2001, when the Pirates finished 62-100, Williams was 3-7 but had a 3.71 earned run average. Left-handers batted .255 against him. The next season, left-handers hit .086 against him, but his season ended in July after shoulder surgery.
"I think he's just picking up where he left off," McClendon said.
"He seems to be healthy again. The velocity on his fastball is pretty decent. His breaking ball and his changeup are things he needs to continue to get better on. I've been pleased with how he's gone about it."
New spot for Jack Wilson
McClendon put Jack Wilson in the seventh spot yesterday in another attempt to help the shortstop end his slump.
"I'm just trying to give Jack a breather," McClendon said.
"I think he's really been pressing at the top of the order."
Gonzalez hurting
Pirates reliever Mike Gonzalez, whose right knee was twisted while he was pitching in Cincinnati Thursday, felt some stiffness yesterday and was available only in an emergency.
