Well, I have an interesting situation with my 2008 tax return. Without getting into the exact specifics of it there was a mistake on it and need to amend it. That being said I went from getting a $9000+ refund, already received, to getting a $5800 dollar refund. Does anyone know where I can find a specific link on how to go about paying this difference back? I have it all and I don't want to get any major penalties for not doing so as soon as possible.

This error was just noticed while working on my 2009 taxes but it has to be corrected.

Thanks, last thing I need is the government on my tail, lol.

Meh. I get worried about these sort of things. Plus I own businesses. My previous accountant looks like he put estimated numbers instead of actual numbers for personal stuff and it looks really bad.

Very interesting

I'm not sure what this means. I had an accountant do my taxes for a few years and now I'm doing all of mine online and came across the error.

I am sure there will be some penalty involved when I amend this but it has to be right unless I want to get audited in the future.

Fletcher's advice is if it was approved to leave it. I'm curious what others thoughts are or advice.

Well I know from working at a college for a couple of years that the Financial Aid form, the FAFSA you can put estimated numbers and if this person was just an ordinary joe I could understand that but he's a paid professional granted now he's an unemployed accountant.

On a serious note as someone who has dabbled in taxes (honestly), Fletcher's recommendation isn't terrible. The other option is to alter your 2009 taxes so that the IRS & you are in the same position. If they ever do come, that way you can say that is how you corrected and play dumb that you didn't know you needed to amend. Honestly it would likely work.

I know that doesn't sound like the soundest advice but as a CPA that is how I would handle such a situation for my own return.

I guess my concern is a) getting it right and b) not getting screwed with my businesses which I file separately.

Fletcher brought up a point that if it was accepted leave it alone. My question is if it's accepted do I need to make changes to it because they probably won't come to it because they've already cleared it?

Doing the right thing is important. I mean of course I'd love to keep the difference. Who wouldn't

I'm just in a mood. Poon's advice sucks.

If your main concern is staying out of trouble, get a small local CPA who knows what he's doing and he can amend. Small price to pay for sleeping easier. I've got some good, cheap (relatively)people in the suburbs if you're interested, but a small, local guy near you should be able to do just as well.

If you're getting that much back as a refund, it means you're not doing it right and need someone to assist.

Thanks man. I didn't mean to come across as bitchy just didn't know what you meant.

Yeah I'd really rather be safe then sorry. If I can't find anyone to take a look in the next couple of weeks I'll look you up for your guys. I don't mind paying as long as things are done right.

Where you at in the city? I live in Dyer and have my office here but I'm always in the city and the burbs.

Payroll taxes absolutely suck. Poon seriously does all your business shit?

Lol. Well my business is expanding could always use someone good. You taking on clients?

I'm out of Public Accounting and tax work. I know good small shop people in the city, but will allow BBC to first accomodate. Don't want to step on his toes. He gets offended when I talk out of turn.
