GAME NOTES: The Temple Owls fly into Keaney Gymnasium tonight to take on the Rhode Island Rams in an Atlantic 10 tilt. Things have not gone as well as in years past for Temple, as it enters this contest with an 8-12 overall record. On a positive note, the Owls have come out on top in their last two outings, including an 82-72 decision over St. Joseph's on Saturday. They have managed just a 2-4 mark on the road thus far, including three straight letdowns in the opposition's building. Despite a miserable 6-13 overall record, Rhode Island has won two of its last three games. On Saturday, it bettered its league mark to 2-6 with a 70-59 decision over Massachusetts. Although the Rams have won four of their eight home games thus far, three of their last four tilts in Kingston have resulted in losses. Temple holds a commanding 41-11 lead in the all-time series between these two programs, including four straight victories over Rhode Island. On January 12th, the Owls recorded a convincing 60-42 decision over the Rams in Philadelphia.
Free throw shooting was clearly the biggest factor in the victory for Temple over St. Joseph's. The Owls knocked down 26-of-27 attempts from the charity stripe as compared to a 10-of-13 effort for the Hawks. Aside from that differential, the game was fairly even in most other major statistical categories. For instance, Temple shot 44.2 percent from the floor and 43.5 percent from three-point range, while St. Joseph's made good on 44.4 percent of its field goal attempts, including a 43.8 percent performance from behind the arc. Lynn Greer was sensational in the win for the Owls, as he hit all 18 of his shots from the free throw line en route to a game-high 34 points. Brian Polk chipped in with 17 points and seven rebounds, and Kevin Lyde pulled down a game-high 12 boards. Despite constant added attention from opposing defenses, Greer is netting 23 ppg in addition to his team-high 4.4 apg. David Hawkins is scoring 14.8 ppg, and Alex Wesby rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.3 ppg.
Rhode Island shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half and held Massachusetts to 25.9 percent en route to a seven-point lead at intermission. Although the Rams cooled off a bit in the second stanza, a 14-6 advantage in points from the foul line over the final 20 minutes enabled them to seal the victory. Ball control was a key to the victory for Rhode Island, as it dished out 16 assists and turned the ball over only 10 times. The Minutemen, by contrast, compiled a mere nine assists and committed 12 giveaways. Troy Wiley and Dustin Hellenga led the way in the victory for the Rams with 15 points apiece. Dinno Daniels contributed 11 points, seven rebounds, and six assists, while backcourt mate Howard Smith chipped in with 10 boards. After missing the first nine games of the season, Wiley has emerged as the team's leading scorer with 14.8 ppg. Hellenga, who is shooting just 34.8 percent from the floor, is the only double-digit scorer with 10.7 ppg. He also paces the squad in rebounding with 4.4 rpg, a modest total to say the least.
The main reason that Temple has not lived up to expectations thus far is that center Kevin Lyde is not playing up to his potential. Still, the Owls remain one of the most feared teams in the Atlantic 10 and are the clear favorites in this game. Expect the Rams to battle, but come up short once again.
Sports Network Predicted Outcome: Temple 70, Rhode Island 58
