Trying - No luck so far - I think this maybe the weekend, its been warm, no rain, and we had that cold snap - Hopefully the hens are on the nests and we will have a shot. If not I will have to wait until next year getting married in two weeks

How about your self?

I've always heard they're tough to hunt but haven't really found out why.

What makes 'em so tough?

Do they smell well?
Hear well?
See well?
Do they not exhibit regular day to day behavior?
What kind of gun/shot/range do you use?
Do they make special "turkey shot"? I can't imagine regular bird shot would do the trick.
Are the wild ones good eating?
Do you shoot them off the ground or while flying or either?

I only know this about a turkey.

A turkey can see you if you blink in the woods.

and a turkey can smell if you fart in the woods.

Very difficult to hunt successfully.

They are extremely hard to hunt

When you are hunting a turkey you are reversing nature.
Let me explain - The Gobbler (male) gobbles this being the hens (females) to him. While turkey hunting you make hen calls (several different types of call - Box call, mounth yelpers,...) and bring the gobbler to you. All while sitting on the ground in a blind or up against a tree. Turkeys also have excellant eye sight and they hear everything. A turkey hunt can be any where from 5min to 5 hours, it depends on how horney the bird is.

Legally to hunt turkeys you use a shot gun with a full choke any where from 10 - 50 yards could be a kill - you have to hit them in the head - and they duck alot. Their feathers are very thick as well as their breast, it makes it hard for a pellet to get through.

There is a turkey shot - it just depends on your preferance.

IMO they are alot better tasting than a store bought bird.
Wild turkeys get lots of protein from bugs and other insects - instead of just wheat or other grains.

Hope this helps kinda long -

...a very good friend of mine bagged a 16 1/2 lb gobbler with a 10 1/2" beard last weekend....

From my limited experience in turkey hunting, this has to be the most difficult animal to hunt successfully....

...to anyone that has the patience and will to try to hunt turkey, best of luck to you. :D

My father is the best turkey hunter i know. He has only been hunting them for the past 25 years of his life he has killed over 400 of them. They are by far the hardest bird to harvest, this is why he does it. He does a triple grand slam every year. Killing at least one bird from the four regions in the usa. Miriam, Osceola, eastern, and rio grande. The biggest one i remember him killing was around 28 pounds. Once you eat a wild bird it makes store bought pale in comparison. I've killed two in my life. Kind of hard hunting them in australia this season:D

I bagged a 17 pounder from Tom Thumb and will eat it this Easter!

I do not hunt for the most part although I wouldn't mind shooting a pig. I heard they aren't particularly hard to find yet can be dangerous to hunt. I had a buddy that was trapping a few on his land last year.

I would think that anything wild would be a better taste, except maybe veal. I don't think there are any veal calves in the wild? I like pheasant also. I shot a Robin Red Breast once when I was a kid with a Crossman 750 pellet gun from about 110 yards. Got him right in the middle of the chest. Kind of ruined me on hunting for birds, felt bad ya' know. I could definitely eat the big bastard if I did shoot it though. Crap, now I'm hungry.

Not big on killing myself, but I'm not against others doing it. I gave up hunting when I killed a deer when I was 14. I used to go on several variety of hunts each year during college and a couple of years after. The group of hunters would pay for my fare and accommodations, and I would video the whole thing. I got a great video of one guy's first turkey kill. If I would have been free-lancing, that guy would have probably paid me well over $250 for a copy. Everytime that guy had someone new over to his house, the turkey video came out.

I always had to get my orders as to where to go and get to my post well before everyone else. It was a ton of fun.

our season just started today, and I didn't have any luck. Scott, they can't smell, just see exceptionally well and their hearing is great too. Shrimp, u can pattern them somewhat. I'm shooting a Benelli Nova 12 gauge with a Kick's choke #6 shot 3.5 inch shell. Kicks like a mule.

thanks Six for clearing that up.

I guess when I farted during a turkey hunt with my grandfather, I mis-took the turkey smelling the fart when he actually heard it.
