I am 51 years old....... 6'2"......220 about 17 % BF...

I have been to 4 different orthopaedic surgeons and they have all said the same thing......I have arthritis in my right knee and it swells up from time to time.....

There is nothing any of them can do for me.......if I had torn my acl or mcl or something else they could help me but nothing for arthritis.........

I am thinking my only options left is maybe

trying to lose 20 lbs......means no more heavy lifting and maybe the stress on my knee will be less so I can be more active in sports that take a little more running.......but to lose 20 lbs I almost think I have to quit lifting weight and start swimming or cycling.....I tend to keep my size when lifting weights...

It just seems no matter what I do........just everyday life causes it to swell up every once in a while....

I am starting to try glucosomine chondritan (sp) and see if that helps

Any advice appreciated.......

Going through this right now and we both have similar builds though I'm 56 and carrying a bit more body fat.

Had both injected with a steroid on the 19th and feelin much better in both of them. I couldn't hardly get up a staircase due to the pain.

They slowly felt better and better over the last week and I've resumed my workouts. Even did some light jogging and basketball today. it's not a permanent answer but if it keeps me off the operating table it's worth getting them shot up every 4-6 months or so.

i'm surprised the doc didn't suggest this. you may be a good candidate for knee replacement if the injections do not help. At least that is what he told me

I should add that my history includes tears in both knees. ACL in left and MCL/meniscus in the right... all that required surgeries when I was in HS and college in the late 70s early 80s

Also, ease up on the amount of weights you lift and go with more reps of much lighter weight. The goal of this is to not gain bulk but to add flexability. Stretch a ton before workouts as well. you should gain a greater range of pain free motion.

Good luck :0008

Yeah I am almost to the point of quitting all the cardio and trying yoga or something........maybe just getting more flexible would help wonders.......I had trouble even relaxing my knee muscles last time i saw the doctor......

I do know what you mean. In my case the pain was not all that bad except for climbing stairs. The biggest issue for me by far is lack of stability. If I move the wrong way and put significant stress on either knee I felt like I was going to go down. Not good if I want to play tennis and 2-3 rounds of golf a week. That was/ is the driving force that keeps me seeking medical help. Im starting some physical therapy on Tuesday. If they give me some useful ideas I'll try to pass them on to you.

Take care...:0008

You know how you put it is exactly how I feel........I am not really heavy or fat and my diet is very good and has been for years although I would be in a lot better shape if I could get down to say 12 percent bodyfat.........but i just have no confidence in knee when planting or moving laterally .......although when i lift it has a decent amount of strength compared to my left knee......

I had arthoscopic surgery on it 20 years ago and it has not been the same since

Maybe its just being 50 plus years old and not moving like I did in my 20s or 30s:shrug:

I have arthritus in my left knee and hip. I had to stop jogging because of the pain not so much in my knee but my hip.

I did notice more pain in my knee in the last 6 months so much more that I was having trouble climbing stairs. I had to go one at a time.

I bought a recumbant excercise bike and use it every day. This really seems to help because you're getting motion to the knee with no weight on it. I was surprised at the difference. I also started Bio-Flex and this seemed to help. GL

Are you still doing squats? Might have to cut that out and switch up your workout. Sounds like you love to workout and lift. Don't stop; maybe just adjust a little.

The gluco/chon yes. You also probably need to consistently take some Aleve or Ibuprofen. Just go by the direction on the bottle for dose, and if no results, your physician can give you Celebrex which I think is like a wonder drug.

As much as I love running, that will probably cause you further problems. A recumbent bike was mentioned, or you could use any kind of stationary bike, or ride a real one.

Here's a back woods/folksie type remedy that I know a few people swear by for arthritis. Soak yellow raisins in gin for a week. Eat 15 of those raisins daily.

Lastly, you might need some orthotics or better shoes in general. I'm also a chiropractic fan, and yes, they can work on your knees and help them.

Without calling my mom and asking I believe she was having the same issue. I think they went in and cleaned out all the stuff around her meniscus? She hasn't had a problem since with that knee and is getting the other knee done in a few months.

I don?t have full fledge arthritis but have had 2 ACL reconstructions on the same knee, and essentially all of the meniscus is gone on that knee. I?m fairly active from a weekend warrior stand point. Still work out at the gym and play various sports in recreation leagues. I take a glucosamine supplement from GNC and stretch a ton. At the gym, I don?t even look at a treadmill and stick to the elliptical from a cardio stand point. Also don?t do any serious/heavy leg lifts like squats, just stick to leg curls and extensions. All of this combined helps considerably.

Taking care of patients with severe osteoarthritic knees is what I do for a living.

Some patients have pain every time they walk. Some like you don?t but experience bad swelling and pain once they get of their feet. I?m sure your knee bothers you a lot when you are laying in bed at night.

Most guys are recommending injections. I would also recommend a knee brace in conjunction with your shots.

The brace will give a bit of push to the lateral side.. (I assume your pain is on the inside of your knee? Most men do.) Anyway, brace gives a little push on the outside of the knee which keeps your tibial and femoral heads from pounding on each other when you walk.

I could recommend a few. You might have a bad stigma about the bracing but these days they are very light and hardly cumbersome at all.

The brace would also help with your instability issues.

Let me know if you have any questions

Good luck

The brace should be covered by your health insurance, depends on the plan. My sons was covered when he had a hockey injury.

stay with the glucosmine tablets daily i was taking them daily 2 years ago and all aches and pains stopped in ankles feet knees etc.
also strongly urge you to get heavy support soles for every shoe you wear they help me today even the top of line sneaker dosen't have enough padding inside.

HEY old age is a bitch we need to change as we grow older!

Asdlo urge you to get water jacussi or whatever it is they use to relive arthritc joints aches problems remember we are composed of water and aquatic treatments are very succesfull

I also keep Naproxen on hand when i strain back or other joints it relieves the pain after two days. Like last night coming home 2 miles from house all of asudden back was killing me so instead of more scrapping i went str8 home took 1000 MG of naproxen bang pain free in 30 minutes!
