Kinda weird, I just got from the DR. I was having tightness in my chest and shortness of breath, on and off for the last month or so.

He told me I have asthma. Seems weird being diagnosed at the age of 32:shrug:

Anyway, he put me on Advair diskus 100/50 and albuterol inhaler. Just don't know what ot expect.

I did have allergie real bad as a child, and had to have shots for almost 5 years as a kid.

This is exactly what I take. The Advair will make a big difference after a couple of weeks if taken daily. The Albuterol is a fast acting drug to be used when you experience an asthma episode. I developed asthma at the age of 35 and have been on some kind of medication for the past 16 years. If you get it under control, you can live normally which thankfully I have been able to. The key for me was once I was prescribed the Advair, and used it regularly.

Have numerous clients with asthma, these are the two most popular prescribed drugs for it and they seem to help. Two foods that you need to try and stay away from and it wont be easy are dairy and wheat. Wheat allergies are a bitch. Also if your overweight and don't do any cardio exercise this just compounds the issue.

I have this crap also and stop taking my meds. They called it exercise induced asthma. I was on singular and an enhaler serevent. I think mine was self induced because like a fool for a couple of years i would use a table saw and no mask in an unventilated room. I just have this cough but a few things have changed for me. 1. I don't know if it is just me but like Boys says wheat brings it out i think it is carbs in general. Everytime i eat a load of carbs i am coughing. 2. I notice mold is a culprit. I just ripped out my old airconditioner unit. The duct work (it was old) had mold in it and now i notice when i go in this one certain room (which i always seem to have it the worse) I don't cough. All i use is the enhaler once in a great while. Sometimes you have to watch because we are a very over medicated country. For the guy that had chest pains i would recommend a stress test. You can't mess around with chest pains.

Good advice from the others. I think it's more common to have it as a kid and then grow out of it, but it can happen the other way too. Mine isn't as bad as it used to be (frequent hospital visits when I was a kid) but I still have it. One thing I will add is that if you live in an area with a lot of moisture clean your wndows regularly. The absolute worst for me, and some others with asthma, is mold. It can build up in the windowsills and make your asthma flare up really bad. And maybe this is just me being paranoid but I check my house/walls for black mold fairly regularly. Good luck... it's a bitch to have but in can be manageable.

you might not have it. You're only really going to know with a full workup including PFTs (Pulmonary Function Tests). Sometimes MDs will diagnose you with it a little too soon. Just because you have some wheezing or shortness of breath doesn't mean you have asthma. If you do have it, like the others said, Advair is a good medicine, but you have to take it all the time, not just when you have symptoms. It's also really expensive if you don't have great insurance.

Sponge wrote about Exercise Induced Asthma and allergies, and he's spot on about both.

If you do have it, it is extremely manageable, and you can live a long life with it.

you should go & see an allergist if your doctor is not one....he will do more thorough tests..

i would say i was diagnosed about the same age but i went thru a barrage of test at a heart and lung hospital. I just went because i was worried about this annoying cough i had and i didn't even smoke except for an occasion pull out of my dug which was pretty rare. Funny but i had a mild attack yesterday. I was in my truck and its wierd i get this little tickle in my throat and then it feels like something is stuck in it. It feels like you have to cough to get rid of it but it takes a few minutes for the feeling to go away. Not sure if this has anything to do with it but those white things are flying all over the neighborhood. What ever the hell they are.

I don't have asma but I have another lung thing going on.

I use the better grade air filters with the higher Merv rating (insert jokes please) at the house. Helps out a ton. They also have large portable air cleaners that don't have replaceable filters. You clean them occasionally yourself. Bought one for the gf's sister. Her little one has horrible lungs.

Stay away from smokers especially ones that gamble.

Asthma can be from a variety of sources. I have it, but the ONLY trigger is short-haired dogs. Not outside allergies, not exercise-induced (the most common), not cats - just short-haired dogs. So, whenever I go visit a friend with a dog, I puff with my Advair and no problem. If I don't puff, I can't breathe within about 10 minutes. Never had allergies or anything of the sort. Found this out by living with a roommate while in law school - once she left with the dog, the problem ceased. If you have to use it every day, you need to be careful. Long term use can mess with your body - I want to say the liver, but could be wrong about that. You want to use the absolute lowest dosage you can to accomplish your purpose.

I think you mean when you puff the Proventil, Ventalin or what ever brand of albuterol you use. Advair is a steroid that you breathe in a "blister" of once or twice a day, every day. The inhalers are generally some form of albuterol which I understand is chemically similar to adrenaline.

Ok, if you feel the need to be technical, yes, you're right. You suck in the Advair. Not everyone uses it every day, as I explained, I only need it on special occasions.

Kelly, I wasn't trying to be technical, I just thought you had the two drugs confused. It was my understanding and my experience that you will not realize any benefit from Advair unless it is used on a regular basis. From what you are saying, this is obviously not the case for everyone.

That's cool. I still call it my "puffer" because I used to use the albuterol puffers...

For my problem, it absolutely works like magic when I need it. Perhaps, though, if you have a different type of asthma you may need to use it every day to prevent symptoms.
