Since the job market is still too tough for me to crack right now, Im thinking of taking on a sales position at a local dealer. Just wanted to get some insight if anyone out there has done it before, and what you thought of it. Hopefully it would be short term work, but if the money turned good, you never know.

i have sold cars for several years, and the money has been very good. however, i would suggest a smaller dealership to start. it will be very competitive and is really cut throat in a larger dealership. try to get into used cars if you can and belive it or not always be honest!! good luck!! jj:D

jjhale,

I just wanted to tell you that I love your tagline. That's always been one of my favorite sayings and that's how I try to live my life. :)

My 1st cousin does. Is sales manager at a Chev,Buick,Pontcho dealer ship. I have sold for him for 20 years for alittle extra fun money. Right now if the incentives were dropped on new cars the sales would crash. Used is best starting point. Most folks can always buy used. Average commiss for used most places is higher. Easier to hide trade in price. Everyone has good idea what new cost and what to try and buy for. I would hope you get a streight salary for 1st 4 months to get comfortable. Then many places will give you a draw against commiss. So used is best to start with. Get a good understanding what differance commiss is between used and new.
And Good Luck.

ace,

never sold cars but i think it's best to find a dealership in an area that's not directly affected by the economy.

lots of people are informed when they go to the dealership these days.....and there are still lots of car salesmen who take people for fools....

means there is lots of room for good honest knowledgeable dealers....and those are the ones that make the $$....bought a used car a year ago....guy was real honest with me and i got a great deal....same car i bought for $9000 was stickered at $14 grand and another guy was hawking it for $12 to a couple while i was initially looking at it....

the dude told me he made good money and was salesman of the year last year at this dealership which is the largest in Texas and 2nd largest in the nation...he was smart, honest, and knowledgable...also was Hispanic which probably goes a long way here in Houston though...

but i think you could make some good $$...might be stressful at first...but i think you could do pretty good after a couple years

hooters, take it you are not the doorman ;) g/f loves it down there, worth ave. and bal harbor mall are 2 of her favorite destinations, LOL!!

Ace, I built/ sold a house to a car salesman, gent of about 55. He was "downsizing" from a 8,000 sq. ft . house to a 4200 sq. ft. house. I asked him how he became so successful selling cars, he gave me a straight forward,"Honesty" followed by a quick,"don't promise what you can't deliver". The last statement was followed by a wink because I was 2 weeks late closing on the house, LOL!!

He thoroughly enjoyed what he was doing , and after a little time built himself quite a following, no matter which car/automaker he sold for.

Good luck!!

Been doing it for 7 years now.

Lots of fun and meet a lot of people.

Get a job at a reputable dealer.

Used Cars is where you can make more money depending on the pay plan but New Cars is easier.

People are informed nowadays and you have to know your stuff.

I do about 80% wholesale and 20% retail.

I now am independent after being a New Car Manager and salesperson at the Saturn store her in OKC.

Talking about Saturn, that would be the place to start as you are givin very good training. ANd the product is easy to sell.

Best of luck and tell us where you went!!

:D

Right now if I go it will probably be Nissan. I knocked on a few doors, and the guy a the Honda dealer offered me a spot in their Nissan dealership if I wanted it based on my background. Reputable place, plus I just like the overall Nissan line better. I have a half day orientation Friday which I think is just an overall picture before you decide if you want to work there.

good luck with the job acehistr8. my cousin sell cars, at a dealership that has a low end and a high end brand; does very well. in the end it will be how good you are at sales, I am terrible and would not last the day.

Nissan has turned it self around from almost going broke the company is now profitable, and is doing very well.

thanks

I think Nissan has a fantastic new line of cars including the Murano and Z, to say nothing of their sedans. Plus they are all made in the USA which means a lot to me. Well I wont make up my mind until I at least go to the orientation, my other option is to hook up with some $20/hr part time jobs a temp agency got me.

One thing I forgot. Remember you need all prices. Just selling 20 grand and up can leave you with a small % of buyers. Give your self as many options as possiable.
