Sabourin Hoping to Tame Wild, Will Start in Minnesota

Dany Sabourin came back to the Pittsburgh Penguins hoping to play in more games than he did last season. That has paid off for him, as he has gotten into 4 out of the team's 10 games. That puts Sabourin on pace for 33 appearances, which is significantly more than the team may have had in mind when they signed him. However, his strong play as of late has given the team some flexibility while Marc Andre Fleury works the kinks out of his game.

Sabourin, coming off of a very fine showing Saturday night against the Montreal Canadiens, will get the call tomorrow night when the team faces the Minnesota Wild. Sabourin is equally comfortable in a relief or a starting role.

"You have to have the same mindset every time you go...it doesn't matter what the score is, or what happens," Sabourin said. "You just have to go in there and try to stop every puck."

Sabourin is no stranger to playing in relief, however he was also a very accomplished starting goaltender in the American Hockey League. The 27 year old won the Baz Bastien Memorial Trophy (Best Goaltender)and the Harry "Hap" Holmes Memorial Trophy (Fewest Goals Against)back in 2005-06 with the Wilkes Barre-Scranton Penguins. Will that translate to the NHL, no is quite sure, but getting a chance is the first step.

Sabourin has always seemed to find NHL situations that put him behind a starter who is a workhorse, Roberto Luongo last year and Marc Andre Fleury now. He is comfortable with that role.

"I think that is why we have a backup goalie in every game...you have to make sure you are ready if you go in there," Sabourin said. "You want to make sure you are ready every time, maybe he's gonna get hurt, it's not what we want but we have to be ready no matter what."

Sabourin was very happy when Pittsburgh invited him back into the fold, but seems even happier now that he has been able to contribute to the team's success.

Wild No. 1 goalie Niklas Backstrom has been declared out of tonight's game and coach Jacques Lemaire told reporters yesterday that forwards Marian Gaborik and Pavol Demitra won't play, either, although general manager Doug Risebrough characterized them as questionable.
