Senior free safety Damien James? sudden absence from the team has coach Nick Saban and LSU players shaking their heads. Senior linebacker Bradie James admitted the situation has not been avoidable.
?It really has been a distraction, but we?ve got to move on,? he said. ?The only thing we can do is move on and keep going. We?ve still got 11 people on each side of the ball trying to compete.?
Despite that and other distractions, including national attention with the release of the Bowl Championship Series rankings, where LSU was ranked ninth, Saban has been pleased with the team?s effort and intensity in practice this week.
?I feel like we?ve had a business-like attitude this week in terms of what we?re trying to do,? Saban said. ?The thing we?re trying to get the players to do is focus on each game, each play, each day and not think about some of the things that are the entertainment part of college football and business part of college football.?
LSU, behind new quarterback Marcus Randall, blew away South Carolina 38-14 in Tiger Stadium last weekend, but looked lethargic in the first half and trailed 14-6 at halftime. Auburn lost to Florida 30-23 in overtime, and Saban stressed LSU cannot decide when it wants to play hard and when it does not.
?I think when you?re at the top of the mountain, or close to it, it?s very treacherous,? Saban said. ?I?ve talked about this before. People are shooting at you, shooting for you, getting up for you, and you?ve got to be ready all the time. I think we found that out last week, and hopefully our players learned a lesson from that.?
Randall?s 12-of-23, 183-yard performance against South Carolina pleased Saban, but he pointed out Randall only has one full game of experience.
?I don?t think one game makes him an accomplished starter, but Marcus did a really, really good job in the game,? Saban said. ?I think it did a lot for his confidence and a lot for the team?s confidence.?
Even though Auburn lost its leading rusher Carnell ?Cadillac? Williams to a broken leg and cannot seem to decide on Daniel Cobb or Jason Campbell as quarterback, Saban said Auburn is a good football team, and LSU?s top-ranked defense has a difficult task at hand.
?They?ve got a lot of good football players,? Saban said. ?I think they?re capable of beating anybody that they play. I don?t think there?s any doubt about that. They historically play well at home, so this is going to be a tough challenge for us.?
Also, playing at Auburn?s Jordan-Hare Stadium (86,063 capacity) will not be as friendly for Randall and the Tigers as the confines of Death Valley.
James said the Tigers have to adopt an old World War II philosophy, in which soldiers would burn the buses because they didn?t want to have any regrets.
?They knew it was one point they had to conquer,? James said. ?That?s how we?ve go to go into this game. We?ve got to burn the ships, burn the buses and act like we?re never coming back. It?s going to be tricky, hostile, emotional, and we?re just going to have to keep playing.?
