Now sees it as catalyst for democracy across Mideast

The leader of the Lebanese opposition, a sharp critic of Washington foreign policy, says he's changed his view of the U.S. war in Iraq, seeing it now as a catalyst for democratic change across the Arab world.

Druze Muslim leader Walid Jumblatt, who is calling for an uprising against Lebanon's Syrian occupiers, is almost sounding like a neoconservative, says Washington Post columnist David Ignatius, who interviewed him in Beirut Monday.

"It's strange for me to say it, but this process of change has started because of the American invasion of Iraq," Jumblatt told the Post columnist.

"I was cynical about Iraq," Jumblatt said. "But when I saw the Iraqi people voting three weeks ago, 8 million of them, it was the start of a new Arab world."

Jumblatt said this spark of democratic revolt is spreading.

"The Syrian people, the Egyptian people, all say that something is changing," he said. "The Berlin Wall has fallen. We can see it."

In an exclusive interview with WorldNetDaily Monday, Jumblatt blamed the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri on Lebanese security officials backed by Syria.

Jumblatt said Hariri told him in a meeting two weeks ago he felt they both were in danger.

The Druze leader told WND he is calling for an "uprising for independence" demanding Damascus withdraw its nearly 20,000 troops from the country and urging the current pro-Syrian government to step down.

"We ask all in Lebanon to claim independence from Syria peacefully and democratically," said Jumblatt.

Jumblatt, in conjunction with other major figures of the anti-Syrian movement, put out a statement Friday urging the "dismissal of the government, which has no legitimacy, and the formation of a transitional administration to protect the Lebanese people and ensure the immediate withdrawal of the Syrian army from Lebanon to pave the way for holding free and honest legislative elections."

It's always been possible, but I still don't think so. One Druze leader doesn't change my mind. I think of Druze approval of our actions about the same as you would think of French approval.

Saw that AR and it is asounding considering who this fellow is--also very encouraging is those voted in(and those voted out) in Palestine gov yesterday-the biggest single move for possibilty of peace there.
Lets see --in this" NEOCON" adm we've changed Afgan and Iraq into voting democracys-with others now wanting a taste after viewing--have former major terrorist backers Pakistan-Saudi-Yemen-Lybia now catching and prosecuting as many or more terrorist than us--free elections in Ukraine--75% of Alqueda leadership captured or killed---
Not bad start for fight on terror and all despite the french and liberals. To be fair I'll let the liberals report what France and they accomplished on waron terror when in power-between the lines please--:)

Oreilly had good topic last night on the NYT and Wash Post and their editorials that were sympathetic to the Muslim sent back to U.S. from the Saudi's that plotted the assasination thing, yet never give the the U.S. soilders the benefit of the the doubt. Will post it here when it comes to print later today. Also had few comments from retired officers and their thoughts on liberal press.
--bottom line lots of goods things have went down and you still got a few who will never see the light.
I have to sit back and think what must be going though UBL's mind about now seeing what has transpired due to his assaults on our turf. If there has been one thing that has deterred future attacks from them it has to be the consequences they will pay---quite diff from the last admin that did nothing after their attack on World Trade.---little wonder he came out of cave in support of Kerry ;)

What's in it for him?

Obviously he's giddy with our demand that Syria withdraw their troops from Lebanon. Wayne, I would hardly call it 'astounding' that he suddenly approves of our actions. It would be his wet dream for us to overthrow the current government in Lebanon, either directly or indirectly.

DTB - I never understood this "UBL supported Kerry thing". The only reference he made to our election was that "neither" person would protect us. What was said exactly that I missed.

The previous administration did not have a 9-11. If Bush did not have a 9-11, what makes you think he would have done any more against terrorism than anybody else? If anything, the indications pointed to him doing even less. All those specific memos being ignored certainly don't validate his previous commitment to fight terrorism.

I'm very happy with any success we have. I've never thought we couldn't topple Iraq and get another government going. And Afghanistan - of course - that was obvious. It's always been about strategy and choosing battles.

The fighting is not over. This will go on for years and years. Some of you guys keep acting like it's "Mission Accomplished" all the time, and want to gloat to the critics. It's not over, and it won't for a very long time. The same week of the Iraq elections was one of the worst casualty weeks since invasion. There are 2 sides to EVERYTHING. No, things are of course not as bad as more left-leaning media will report, but they certainly aren't as rosey as Fox reports either.
