Last time gas was this high. Oil per barrel was 6 bucks higher. Spot gas price was higher. Believe they said 72 cents. Katrina among other storms had raised hell. Supply and demand is actually down 1/2%. So whats there excuse.

Who's excuse--congress:shrug:

Bitching about things per the other party is easy--having solutions quite a diff matter--isn't it.

Can you name one bill they passed?--too busy carping on issues (their strong point) than finding solutions their week point--

Case in point--one of their biggest issues before election was corruption and lobbying reforms--but what have they done since elected--

Lobbying Reform Losing Steam in House
Lobbying Reform Losing Momentum in Congress After Democrats Touted It for 2006 ElectionThe Associated Press By CHARLES BABINGTON Associated Press Writer
WASHINGTON May 11, 2007 (AP)

Print House Democrats are suddenly balking at the tough lobbying reforms they touted to voters last fall as a reason for putting them in charge of Congress.

Now that they are running things, many Democrats want to keep the big campaign donations and lavish parties that lobbyists put together for them. They're also having second thoughts about having to wait an extra year before they can become high-paid lobbyists themselves should they retire or be defeated at the polls.

The growing resistance to several proposed reforms now threatens passage of a bill that once seemed on track to fulfill Democrats' campaign promise of cleaner fundraising and lobbying practices.

It will disappoint me greatly if that legislation does die, or get watered down by the House. Must point out though, that the dems were aggressive in initiating these measures and bringing them to public light, and the Senate easily and quickly passed the original ethics measures and the bill you are referring to. So, just so we're clear, the issue you apparently have is that some members of the House are against some of the provisions of the bill - the Senate already passed it.

Still positives from me on taking it on in any way - compare it to the Republican efforts over the years? :142smilie

How about a focus on what the Republicans did in their time of control about gas prices, Wayne? A lot more time to devote to the issue than the democrats in power now - about an 8-1 difference, right? And how did they concern themselves with the price of gas and oil companies? Sweeping reforms and tax credits to help them out - with no protection for Americans that they will do anything to reward them for the extra money and benefits. Did they see to it that the oil companies were paying the royalty fees for drilling that they are supposed to pay? Nope. Did they mandate any price structures or breaks for consumers? GOD no...can't put any regulations on any companies...just give them breaks...and they'll do right by us, right? Record, unheard of profits, repeated quarter after quarter, with a new story each quarter about why gas prices are so high, or will be high. Reduce them briefly prior to elections, and jack them up in time for summer trips.

So, I compliment the democrats for not giving oil companies big breaks. They (oil companies) certainly have not had the best interest of Americans in mind (other than American shareholders and upper management) with the benefits bestowed upon them by Cheney and company.

Here's the story from this weekends OPERATING GUIDELINE for Valero's Lima Ohio refinery. Of note BP sold this refinery almost 10 years ago for about 240 MILLION dollars. Valero will be closing a deal by the end of June....selling this refinery for 1.9 BILLION dollars to HUSKY OIL of Canada.

Environment

Chicago 3/2/1 crack closed at a remarkable $43.74 on 5/17...up another $3.50 from last week. Continuing Mid-West refinery outages, low pipeline rates from the Gulf, new Gulf Coast refinery problems, and terminals nearly empty are putting extreme pressure on Mid-West gasoline prices?now the highest in the nation. The gasoline crack held steady for most of the week and even lost a little ground, but then blew out again yesterday. Thursday?s closing crack spread on gasoline was over $52/barrel!! ULSD and Jet remain relatively steady at $27 and $24. This is starting to sound monotonous, but these abnormally high cracks never last for long, so we need to continue reliable operation, push gasoline production as hard as we can, and move all of the products out of the refinery on spec.

What is really amazing is when prices were up in the Carter administration it was all Carters fault and nobody else. Now we have a plethora of excuses and to Republicans this is totally acceptable. It wasn't acceptable then and it isn't now. This is flat out greed and nothing else and if these pricks truly cared about terrorism and the country we would be off of this stuff in three years. Brazil does it but here they will never stop buying the black gold from the Saudi's among others. And thank you Clinton for letting them all merge. Another sellout.
