Arizona/Washington questions?

First question:

Is Arizona better this year than last year? In my opinion Arizona's defense has been bad, but it has consistently improved the past few year's. Lassiter is a pro-bowler, and their linebacking corps is very good with Ray Thomspon and Ron Mckinnon. Most people don't know these names, but these guys are pretty good. The D-line has some young talent that might be able to produce. With a healthy Duane Starks, and Kyle Van Den Bosch the defense should get better. On offense their O-line is solid, they have a capable running back in Marcel Shipp, and they might get something out of Emmitt Smith. Jeff Blake is a bit erratic, but he has proven that he can lead an offense down a field. The big question on this team is their receiving corps. Freedie Jones has been a forgetten man on this team. They have guys with potential, but can they contribute? Jason McAddley, Anquan Boldin Bryant Johnson and Marquis Walker are guys that I believe can catch the ball, but how consistently? I know this team is well coached, and everyone is already writing them off, but I think they are better than last year (5 - 11).

Second Question:

Washington is another team that puzzles me. I think they have lots of potential to open some eyes this year. The big question is how good is their offensive line? With Spurrier coaching he has everyone fighting for their jobs which in turn makes every player on that offense play very hard. This offense has many weapons, and has some speed as well. Rob Johnson/Patrick Ramsey will get the job done (between the two of them), Trung Canidate will add speed, they still have Ladell Bettis and Kenny Watson. Laverneus Coles and Rod Gardner will start, but they have some decent guys behind them. The only thing that will hold them back is a poor play from the O-linemen.

Anyone have any opinions?

Its hard to believe, but nfl.com does NOT have the current depth charts. They are from last year.

Sporting news seems to be accurate.

The Cardinals have the real "no-name defense". CB Starks is one of the few I have heard of.

There isnt much stopping power on the defense, but I will bet the stats will look good at the end of the year because teams dont have to score very much to win.

I am a Charger fan for many years. Around 5 years ago the Chargers had a terrible offense. I cant even remember the QBs names, but I am sure they are throwing newspapers now.

Anyway, almost every team (and I mean every team) played San Diego as a chance to rest up for the next weeks games. They knew that if they could score 14 points in the first half, the game was over. After it was 14-0 or 17-3, the other team would play ball control and keep the Chargers pinned in their own end. Then in the 2nd half, the opponent would intercept a pass (or get a fumble) from the Chargers and score 1 or 2 more TDs. Of course, those TDs didnt count against the Chargers defense.
The other teams didnt have to pass, so the stats seemed good.

At the end of the game the Chargers defense statistically played good, but the Chargers lost 28-10.

So thats my answer; is a team that is in the top 10 in defense but only wins 5 games a year still a good defense?

Arizona will have good stats on defense because team dont have to push them.

San Diego found out that the hard way. QB Brees was actually quite good for a first starting year, and Tomlinson is great. Teams finally had to score last year, and they did.
Thats why, on paper, the Chargers went from a good defense to a bad defense in one year. In reality, it was always a bad defense.

Its no coincidence that teams like Oakland, Denver, and Kansas City have poor defensive stats. Other teams know they must score early and often to stay in the game. The Broncos and Chiefs have definitely learned that. Very seldom does a team have a high power offense and a great pressure defense, especially with the Cap and free agency. Those teams win the SuperBowl.

Arizona will probably be a good bet in the middle of the season, when some teams are thinking playoffs.
Look for the Cardinals to cover for the reasons I mentioned above. This will be particularly effective when a team is thinking playoffs early and the Cardinals are a "sandwich" game.

Got ya. I'm thinking the same thing. I don't expect this team to make the playoffs or anything, I just get the feeling that they will cover some spreads late and will open a few eyes.

One more small note, not sure if I wrote this before, but Jeff Blake is a gambling man. He loves to throw those deep bomb passes. Most defenses will focus on Arizona's running game, which should leave their receivers one-on-one. Eventually Blake will connect a couple of times on these long throws and might pull off a win or two late in games.

V. dave..

keep this in mind...i often hear people say the game is won and lost in the trenches...meaning the offensive and defensive lines respectively...

ZONA..on defense could not stop the run or stop the past last year ...they were 30th against the run and 28th against the pass..they had a team total of only 21 sacks:eek: ....

they got absolutely no one in free agency to improve..the d line..they drafted CALVIN PACE who should give left end FRED WAKEFIELD a run ...

but your talking about a D LINE with the likes of THIS ROTATION

FRED WAKEFIELD...VANDEN BOSCH...RUSSELL DAVIS ...WENDALL BRYANT... BARON TANNER AND MARCUS BELL

THE ONE AREA I THINK THIS TEAM IS UNDER RATED ON IS THE OFFENSIVE LINE..IF THEY CAN STAY HEALTHY ..LEONARD DAVIS IS VERY GOOD...ANTHONY CLEMENT WHO WAS HURT LAST YEAR SHOULD BE 100%...L.J. SHELTON IS SOLID FROM THE LEFT SIDE AND BOSTON COLLEGE PRODUCT PETE KENDALL IS SOLID AS WELL....THE ONE QUESTION IN MY EYES IS WHO IS GOING TO REPLACE MIKE GRUTTADADAURIA AT CENTER......

THEY HAVE POTENTIALLY THREE PLAYERS WHO CAN PLAY CENTER...JASON STARKEY...WHO THEY PLAYED QUITE A BIT LAST YEAR..PROBABLY IN ANTICIPATION OF GRUTTA, RELEASE THIS YEAR...FREE AGENT FRANK GARCIA AND STEVEN GRACE....

ITS A VITAL POSITION ON THE LINE BUT I THINK THESE REPLACEMENTS SHOULD BE MORE THAN ABLE TO TAKE OVER THE SPOT....

WITH THIS OFFENSIVE LINE I THINK THEY SHOULD BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL AND WITH THEY SIGNED JAMES HODGINS FROM ST LOUIS TO BLOCK AT FULLBACK...AN UPGRADE AT THAT POSITION....

I THINK THEY WILL BE BETTER THAN PEOPLE THINK BECAUSE OF THE FACT I THINK THEY WILL BE ABLE TO RUN THE BALL AND PLAY SOME BALL CONTROL....BUT IF THEY DONT THIER DEFENSIVE LINE LOOKS LIKE THIS TEAMS WEAKEST LINK..WHICH SPELLS TROUBLE...BECAUSE THIS TEAM IS NOT BUILT TO PLAY FROM BEHIND...

I WOULD SUSPECT THEY ARE GOING TO TRY AND RUN THE BALL MORE OFTEN THAN NOT..WITH SMITH AND SHIPP...AND NOT ASK BLAKE TO WIN THE GAME BUT RATHER PLAY MISTAKE FREE....AND MAYBE TAKE A SHOT DOWNFIELD HERE AND THERE WITH BLAKES ARM TO KEEP THE DEFENSE WEARY OF THE PASS TO KEEP THEM OUT OF THE BOX SO MUCH...

THERE SECONDARY IS A STRONG POINT...EVEN THOUGH THEY WERE TERRIBLE AGAINST THE PASS..I THINK THIS WAS A REFLECTION MORE UPON THE D-LINE NOT BE ABLE TO PENATRATE AND PUT SOME PRESSURE ON RATHER THAN COVERAGE IN THE SECONDARY...THERE IS ONLY SO LONG YOUR SECONDARY CAN COVER I DONT CARE WHAT TEAM YOU ARE OR WHO IS IN YOUR DEFENSIVE BACKFIELD ...IF YOU GIVE ANY TEAM TOO MUCH TIME TO THROW BEACUSE OF NO PRESSURE THEY WILL EVENTUALLY FIND SOMEONE TO THROW TO...

REALLY THINK ITS UP TO THIS D-LINE TO IMPROVE IN ORDER FOR IT TO COMPETE THIS YEAR AND UNLESS THESE GUYS START TO BLOSSOM AFTER A YEARS EXPERIENCE THEY COULD BE IN BIG TROUBLE

Good stuff cooz, I agree with most of what you said.

I think that we agree on the point that Arizona will be overlooked by many. I don't think they will be anything special, but most people have written them off already.

The Defensive line was awful last year, and 90% of QB's will pick apart your secondary when there is no pressure, but Kyle Van Den Bosch looked very effective before getting injured, and Wendell Bryant was also a nice addition. Its definitely the biggest weakness on this team, but there's a chance that there might be some improvement this year.

Lions are -4.

There's a thread in this forum started by aladabra with all the week one lines just a bit lower.

I feel that the Cardinals will not do very good the first few weeks unless it is scorching hot in Az. for the Seahawks and Packers. The sandwich game I was referring to was maybe week 8.

Week 7
ARI - bye week
T B @ S F

Week 8
S F @ ARI

Week 9
STL @ S F

The 49ers have 2 tough conf (1 div) games with lowly ARI between. I am not saying the Cardinals will win outright (its possible) but they should be getting a LOT of points. Thats what I look for in a sandwich game.
