I'll try and be as unbiased as possible
First time the Cats have been on TV as they finished their preseason against Team Nike. Ended up winning by 25. . . a very high scoring game. . . obviously not a lot of defense but still saw a few things that allow us to see strengths and weaknesses:
Arizona will beat teams that:
Turn the ball over
Lack depth
Unable to run the floor
Arizona will struggle against team that:
Have size. . . especially under the basket
Shoot the 3 ball well (a normal problem I've noticed for years)
Wildcats are just as fast as ever this year and will run teams absolutely crazy that can't keep up and do not have depth or speed. On the flipside, this team is very small which is evident when they have Hassan Adams at power forward!
Arizona led the nation last year in scoring and I don't think this season will be any different. The key will be defense. . . especially up front with Frye having to take on the bulk of rebounding and preventing easy shots in the paint. He's certainly capable of holding his own, but will have long nights as well when the Cats compete against physical teams that pound the ball inside.
On specific players that stood out:
Andre Iguodala: The best player on this team. . . can shoot the long ball and drive to the basket
Mustafa Shakur: He will be up there with Stoudamire as the best pure shooter. . . he drained 3's with ease tonight.
Kirk Walters: Will be a star in a year or two at center but lacks strength to be an effective backup to Channing Frye.
Chris Rodgers: The biggest surprise. . . he was pathetic last year but went out tonight, shot the ball with ease and made some incredible passes which never happened last year.
Anyways, looking forward to the game next Friday against Florida. . . would like to hear a scouting report on the Gators if possible! Again, the best teams to pick over Arizona this year will be the UConn's and other teams with size upfront which should counter the Cat's speed advantage which they should have in nearly every game they play.
