Pederson camp: Jon Kyl spent more time on internet gambling than dealing with Iraq
Gambling community mocked by Kyl PR guy

The Arizona Daily Star reported on the online gambling communities efforts to educate Arizona state voters about Senator Jon Kyl (R) and his attempts at making internet poker and other forms of online gambling illegal.

Democratic Senate candidate Jim Pederson has secured the crucial endorsement of online gamblers, the paper reports.

Well, sort of.

"The industry has mounted an attack on U.S. Sen. Jon Kyl, who co-sponsored a bill that bans the use of credit cards, PayPal and bank accounts for Internet gambling.

"The gaming Web site Gambling 911.com, even went so far as to threaten a media attack against the Republican senator."

Kyl PR man Andy Chasin dismissed the industry's flexing.

"They have the same right to vote, but if you look at the demographics ?" he said, drifting into a long pause before changing the subject.

The pause implied that perhaps gamblers aren't the most diligent voters.

Mark Bergman, Pederson's top campaign spinmeister, had an interesting twist on the issue, somehow tying it to Kyl's support of the war in Iraq.

"He spent his time working on online gambling instead of the war in Iraq," he said.

Poker Players Against Jon Kyl has already witnessed over 50 donors to date without pressing gamblers to contribute towards the Jim Pederson campaign. If they can send more money than any other donor group thus far, we hate to see what they are capable of at the voting booths.

I mailed in my early-voting ballot this morning with a vote for Pederson. Sadly, I highly doubt it will do much good.

I don't live in Arizona but I gave money anyway!

Jon Kyl is a cancer for on-line gambling. He will take the next step and ban ISPs

Already there are people in Arizona emailing they will not vote for Kyl even though they have in the past.

[Contribute even a dollar to this cause. Even if you are not big on Pederson, HE is taking notice. We need to show how committed our industry is.

Arizona Senate Race: Poker Players Against Jon Kyl give boost to Jim Pederson campaign
Grassroots movement Poker Players Against Jon Kyl have provided quite a boost for the Jim Pederson campaign, with donors giving more than twice the amount of money than all other independent fund raising efforts combined according to ActBlue.com

Considering the campaign only began late this past week, the $7000 plus amount raised thus far and 84 donors is impressive.

Even more impressive still is the fact that Poker Players Against Jon Kyl is not a group necessarily looking to pump money into Pederson's campaign or even encourage Arizona residents to vote for him.

"The online gambling industry is encouraging Arizona residents to vote against Jon Kyl," said Christopher Costigan, President of Gambling911.com. "There is after all another person running in this race besides Kyl and Pederson. The reality, however, is that only Pederson can come close to beating Jon Kyl and as such we would anticipate Pederson gets the majority of votes from those who are now having a difficult time playing online poker in the state."

The donations to Pederson's campaign have simply poured in as a bonus of sorts.

"Most online gamers do not wish to support any particular politician," said Costigan. "They feel that politicians - Republicans and Democrats alike - have let them down. But the fact that people are actually donating to the Pederson campaign really demonstrates just how outraged the online poker and gaming community is with Senator Kyl's actions."

Starting the end of last week, online gambling websites alerted hundreds of thousands of its Arizona-based customers that Senator Jon Kyl (R) had co-sponsored a bill outlawing online poker and other forms of internet gambling utilizing the "family values" platform. But during the final minutes of Congressional voting before Election Day recess, Kyl ensured that horse racing and state lotteries were exempt from the new law. Many believed this action went completely against his previous stance related to "family values". Observers asked how can a skill game like poker be so bad yet horse racing online is okay?

Kyl and his cronies, including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, also ensured passage of the internet gambling prohibition by attaching it to a port security bill that was almost guaranteed to pass yet had absolutely nothing to do with online gaming. To make matters worse, important mass transit and rail security provisions were removed and swiftly replaced with the internet gambling provision during the final hours before passage. Jon Kyl chairs the Terrorism, Technology and Homeland Security Subcommittee.

Jon Kyl's PR guy, Andy Chasin, dismissed the online gambling industry's flexing and mocked Arizona gamblers in doing so.

"They have the same right to vote, but if you look at the demographics ?" he said, drifting into a long pause before changing the subject.

The pause implied that perhaps gamblers aren't the most diligent voters, according to Daniel Scarpinato and Josh Brodesky of the Arizona Daily Star.

Mark Bergman, Pederson's top campaign spinmeister, had an interesting twist on the issue, somehow tying it to Kyl's support of the war in Iraq.

"He (Jon Kyl) spent his time working on online gambling instead of the war in Iraq," he said.

Kyl in fact has been trying to pass a law banning internet gambling every year accept 2004 since 1998.
