Probably gonna piss some of the masses off with the ravenous fans we have today but to me the stuff that goes on into today's sports is mind boggling. Lockouts. strikes, esculating ticket prices, seal clubbing of fans for supporting their teams and it goes on and on and on. Yet many ignore the arogance of today's athletes and act is if they are gods. Talking sports to some people is worse than talking politics, religion or too a drunk person. It is becoming nearly impossible and a waste of time.
I have been a sports fan since I was a child. As the years go by and there are many, I am finding it harder and harder for myself to support an establishment that really seems to have no care for the " TRUE" fans.
The MLB ALLSTAR game has really struck me this year. Mainly due to the fact of one individual. Mr 3000 Derek Jeter. My thoughts on this occured way before the main stream media started debating it. In my eyes what he has done is basically shit on those who have made him millions and when I say millions I mean to the tune of 225 million in salary alone over his career. In some shape, way or form "US" fans have contributed to the monies he has and others have earned in various ways.
Yea it's only an ALLSTAR game some will say. If memory serves me correct though the ALLSTAR game was for the fans. It was a way of saying Thank You for the support. It was a time when kids could see their favorite athletes and a rare chance to get an up close look at these athletes. A time that they are probably more accessible than any other time during the season. A time when a young kid could throw a ball on the field to his favorite baseball player and get an autograph without being charged 100+ dollars for it.
Maybe I see things much differently. I can reflect on years of past and to me the athletes, the environment and their appreciation of fans has declined in many ways. Maybe it is the new society. I have no idea. To me something is truly a miss.
Jeter is not the only one who has shunned on the masses and he will surely not be the last, but at this time he is the flavor of the day so to say. For him to not even make an appearance at the AllStar game is a slap in the face to all baseball fans young and old. He was voted in by the fans. He should be there for the fans. Realistically he was not even and ALLSTAR this year which is even more a kiss of the ass cheek to the masses.
For him to even say that he is emotionally and mentally drained is a farce. To me it just shows his true arogance and in some ways his thought process. I am sorry but if you want to know what emotional and mentally draining means you need to ask one individual. Mr. Henry Aaron. What this man went through during his pursuit of Babe Ruth's homerun record is what makes Mr. Henry
Aaron in my eyes one of the greatest individuals in our history. Athlete or not. Mr. Aaron never wavered from the fact that while many of the white folks would have rather seen him dead he continued to speak with his bat. Not on twitter, facebook or in the papers. On the field. This never stopped him from being an example for all. He continued to show his appreciation for the game and the fans. The death threats never stopped him from being an ambassador of the game either.
I could go on and on about this man. Too me he was someone I would want any kid to admire, respect and appreciate. I cannot say that for many of the athletes of today.
Thus I get back to Jeter. There will be no argument that will justify his actions to me as a so-called fan. For him to turn his back on those that have supported him is a just another slap in the face from today's athlete. It happens more and more from the so-called good guys. I know many will argue for him. So be it. I just cannot agree with the principal.
Let's face it. Gone are the glory days so to say. Fans of today are not the same as yester years. Now we sit in the stands with signs that say I LOVE YOU Derek, marry me, i want to have your baby etc. Hoping to get our 15 minutes of fame on t.v. or to be the talk of twitter I presume.
You can hardly go to a game without a brawl breaking out. I mean come on "Seriously". We have a guy who's life will never be the same because he attended a game wearing another teams jersey. Is this what sports has come to? Has the love for sport turned to an obsession? I am beginning to wonder if we have more wacko's then fans in the stands at today's games.
I realize not everyone applies to the statement above. I don't think anyone can deny it has become more frequent though. It shouldn't exist at all. No matter who you root for you should be able to show your support without the worry of being beaten to a pulp.
Even though our so called HERO's will continue to rub it on our faces, it seems that more of us attend. I for one am about to an impasse. And no Jeter is not the reason. It has been brewing for many years. But no matter what happens it seems that many will take it with a grain of salt and conitnue to support the society as a whole.
I could write for hours about this subject. The main ? for most is am I the only one who feels like something is a miss? Am I alone in seeing what is occuring with today's sports and fans? Curious to see what others think. I will go back on trying to figure out why I need to twitter that I am about to take a shit now.
