Garland's next start is make-or-break

April 23, 2003

BY DOUG PADILLA STAFF REPORTER

BALTIMORE-- Jerry Manuel cracked in the interrogation room Tuesday, finally admitting that Jon Garland is facing a make-or-break start this weekend.

Manuel and Garland held a meeting to discuss the right-hander's tenuous hold on a spot in the rotation. Afterward, neither was willing to talk about it much. After repeated questions on the subject, Man-uel gave some insight.

"Jon has been a guy that when his back is against the wall or when he has had to be good or if there was a big game, he performed extremely well,'' Manuel said. "This is a big game for him. This is a game where his back is against the wall. I expect him to perform well.''

Garland is 0-2 this season with a 7.32 ERA in four starts and has given up 23 hits and nine walks in 192/3 innings. He is scheduled to face the Minnesota Twins at home Saturday.

"The way I'm performing, yeah I'm worried about it because I'm not doing my job,'' Garland said. "I'm not doing what I'm here to be doing. It's a workplace and obviously they're looking to see what they can do, what their options are.''

The main option would be to move Danny Wright into the rotation when he returns from a rehabilitation assignment at Class AAA Charlotte and either send Garland to Charlotte or put him in the bullpen.

Wright had a no decision in a start Tuesday against Durham, his second for the Knights. He went four innings, giving two runs on five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. He threw 76 pitches.

"This is the big leagues, this is not a place of potential, this is a place of performance,'' Manuel said. "When you're not performing, obviously there are other people in other situations where you try to get the best performer. We're no different regardless of who it is.''

You really can't be as inconsistent as Garland is without getting into this position. He's always come through. Something to look forward to for Saturday against Minnesota (Reed is expected)
