At the Gate - Friday

Justenuffhumor won a laugher in the Fourstardave Handicap (G2) in his last start, which was his stakes debut, and the four year old colt looks like he is going to be very tough as he is the morning line favorite in today?s $200,000 Bernard Baruch Handicap (G2) at Saratoga.

The colt has now won five races in a row, and while his price is going to be on the light side, I can?t find a valid reason to take a stand against him.

We might be able to catch a decent exacta as my second choice in the race is Deal Making, a Graham Motion trainee who is making his second start off a layoff.

The gelding is 12/1 on the morning line and coming off a runner up finish at Presque Isle as a prep, I am hoping he gets overlooked in the wagering.

Saturday?s Travers Day card looks outstanding. There are thirteen races including six stakes races. The Ballerina, King?s Bishop, and Travers will be televised live on ESPN starting at 4:30 ET.

While the Travers failed to land Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird or Preakness winner Rachel Alexandra, there still is a competitive field of seven three year olds.

Quality Road, coming off an impressive victory in the Amsterdam (G2) on August 3 is the 8/5 morning line favorite.

His main competition will come from Belmont Stakes (G1) winner Summer Bird and Jim Dandy (G2) winner Kensei.

I will have my full card report for Travers Day available here on Friday afternoon.

Here is today's opener from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 OClm $25,000N2X (1:00 ET)
#6 Groomedforvictory 3/1
#8 Ruffino 7/2
#4 South Fourth St. 4/1
#1 Brocco Valley 10/1

Analysis: #6 Groomedforvictory had a tough post last out and raced against an inside speed bias in a game second place finish at today's condition. The gelding swung out to the outside in the stretch and came within a head of running down the gate to wire winner. It was a solid effort considering it was his first go around two turns. The gelding has had a habit of landing in the bottom half of the exacta, but Ramon sticks for a hot Tagg barn and this gelding should be roiling late with a fairer racing surface.

#8 Ruffino has not been seen since January where the gelding prevailed by a nose to win at this level, and he has won 3 of his last 5 starts, all at today's Alw-2 state bred condition. He has won 5 of 9 in his career and has run well off the bench in the past. The Bond barn is 15% winners (with a +ROI) with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 9/5 or better.
EX: 6,8 / 1,4,6,8
TRI: 6,8 / 1,4,6,8 / 1,3,4,6,8

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 Bernard Baruch Hcp G2 (5:30 ET)
#1 Justenuffhumor / #1a Colony 9/5
#7 Deal Making 12/1
#5 Cowboy Cal 5/2
#3 Mambo Meister 8/1

Analysis: #1 Justenuffhumor passed his first stakes test with flying colors as our top pick, winning the Fourstardave (G2) in impressive fashion, paying $9.50 for the win. It was the colt's fifth win in a row, and the well bred colt looks capable of winning right back. He is a half to a couple of nice stakes winners in Dreaming of Anna ($2 million) and Lewis Michael ($812K).

#7 Deal Making figures to be tighter for his second start off a nine month layoff. He made his return over the Tapeta surface at Presque Isle, checking in second against Alw-4 company. He has done his best running on turf and had a productive three year old campaign that included a win in the Stanton, followed by a solid second in the Hall of Fame (G2) here last summer. He is in good hands with the Motion barn and would be no surprise to see him move forward enough second off the bench to be in the mix here at a generous price.

Wagering
WIN: #1 to win at 9/5 or better.
EX: 1,7 / 1,3,5,7
TRI: 1,7 / 1,3,5,7 / 1,3,5,7,8

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R1: #1 Brocco Valley 10/1
R2: #6 She?s a Ketch 8/1
R2: #8 Ostensibly 15/1
R3: #1 Diamond Song 8/1
R5: #8 Triple Tax Exempt 12/1
R7: #5 Treat Her Right 12/1
R8: #6 Kicky Tune 10/1
R9: #7 Deal Making 12/1
R9: #3 Mambo Meister 8/1
R10: #5 Catch the Bottom 8/1

Good luck today!

HORSE RACING TODAY AT DEL MAR By Richard Eng

HORSE RACING TODAY AT DEL MAR By Richard Eng

HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 3 p.m.

Race 1 - 1 mile, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds

Defense King - Doug O'Neill found a cozy niche and keeps him right there; notice how no one claimed him.

Run Over You - Lone speed is the best bet in horse racing; Berrio-Avila play catch me if you can.

Long Shot - Low Gear Power

Race 2 - 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Ten Forty Five - Terry Knight is one underrated trainer; bred to win early, watch the tote board for clues.

G W Fin's - Speed pedigree by El Corredor; Eric Guillot and Southern Equine have popped some good looking babies.

Long Shot - Calcutta Rose

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up

Be Realistic - Tiny edge in a bad looking race; A.C. Avila barn is hot now, could do damage the rest of Del Mar.

Bullya - Draw a live thru his last race and his resume looks OK; definitely for forgiving handicappers.

Long Shot - Sandita

Race 4 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds

Tweebster - Even running in debut; Bob Baffert switches to turf quickly, must have seen something.

Alfarabi - Logical chalk facing a lot of question marks in here; well bet in both starts, should keep improving.

Long Shot - Wings of Sound

Race 5 - 6 furlongs, Purse $16,000, Claiming $10,000, 4-year-olds and up

Raingear - Ran a winning race in last for this bottom claiming level; repeat effort puts him in the number.

Brother Man - Speedball should be able to clear early; if speed is holding up early on, move him up a notch.

Long Shot - Autocue

Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $25,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Catsalot - There is so much speed in here, the closers have a big shot; ran big in last at Golden Gate.

Hotrod Kelly - Exceptional turf record at many levels; the turf rail is out 14 feet, there will be a speed duel.

Long Shot - Salty Sarah

Race 7 - 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Claiming $20,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Unusually Hot - An Unusual Heat get with a big chance to win, shocking; bugboy saves ground, angles out late.

Debating Society - Has found her comfort level and figures to be dangerous; tactical speed to sit a trip.

Long Shot - Havens Lake

Race 8 - 1 3/8th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), $85,000 CTT and TOC Handicap, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Black Mamba - Big time class relief from graded stakes; should win easy if she has anything left in the tank.

Gloria Goodbody - John Glenney's best shot to win this meet; Joe Talamo will send and sit controlling the pace.

Long Shot - Lemon Chiffon

Race 9 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds

Danceuponthestars - Good second in debut, albeit in slow time; if he improves a step of two, he'll be tough.

Unusual D J - A Barry Abrams FTS by Unusual Heat; watch the tote board for clues, this is an overall bad field.

Long Shot - Marino's Star

Best Bet - Black Mamba (race 8)

Del Mar Thursday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/6/$44.00; Long Shots, 8/1/$9.40; Best Bet, 1/1/$4.40

Del Mar Totals - 461/113/$797.20; Long Shots, 243/26/$385.40; Best Bets, 25/9/$37.40

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #5 R Little Nugget (4/1) in race 3 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Broad Stone scratched at Monmouth Park. Stats - 129/98/$724.10

RICHARD ENG: Travers' field might be stronger than Derby's

RICHARD ENG: Travers' field might be stronger than Derby's

RICHARD ENG: Travers' field might be stronger than Derby's

It is Saratoga's turn to offer a great array of graded stakes Saturday, headed by the $1 million Travers for 3-year-olds. Rachel Alexandra won't be in it, but an argument can be made that the seven-horse Travers' field is stronger than the Kentucky Derby's.

Six starters are coming into the race off a triple-digit Beyer. In the 19-horse Kentucky Derby, only four starters ran a triple-digit Beyer going in.

Quality Road is the 8-5 favorite off a comeback sprint win in the Amsterdam. He is a faster horse than any foe Rachel Alexandra will face in next week's Woodward for older horses. Owner Jess Jackson, by choice or by accident, found an easier spot in the Woodward for his champion filly.

Kensei is a now horse off an improving win in the Jim Dandy. He bested Warrior's Reward and Charitable Man, who are in the Travers' field.

The Travers could be a jockey's race as well. Only Hold Me Back appears outclassed. Even long shot Our Edge can get loose on the lead and cause trouble. My pick is Summer Bird, who was second to Rachel Alexandra in the Haskell.

The Travers' undercard includes the King's Bishop, Ballerina, Ballston Spa and Victory Ride.

A terrific duel figures to see Munnings versus Big Drama in the King's Bishop. Munnings could not last in the two-turn Haskell, but has the tools to be the best sprinter in the country.

The Ballston Spa will kick off an attractive all-stakes pick 4 bet. A horse who will be a single for me is Rutherienne, second pick in the Ballston Spa.

? TALE OF TWO TRAINERS -- When asked by newcomers who I consider more important, jockey or trainer, I always answer trainer. My reasoning is a trainer is hands-on around his horses "24/7" and the jockey rides a horse in the afternoon only. If a trainer gets a horse in peak form, ready to win, many jockeys can get the job done.

Thus, I was surprised to see two respected East Coast trainers -- Tom Albertrani and Bruce Levine -- having such divergent meets between Monmouth Park and Saratoga.

At Monmouth through Thursday, Albertrani had won 13 of 39 starts and Levine 37 of 107 starts.

At Saratoga, both trainers are winless, Albertrani from 21 starts and Levine from 38. Mind-boggling. We know Saratoga is a tough place to win, but those stats are startling.

HOT-R WEEKEND

A look at a horse, an owner, a trainer and rider of interest in the coming weekend at Del Mar.

HORSE ? SPRING HOUSE

Notable: The defending champion in the $250,000, Grade II Del Mar Handicap will be tested by nine rivals in Sunday's 1 3/8-mile turf marathon. The 7-year-old, gelded son of Chester House clocked 2:11.14 in a 1? -length victory over Transduction Gold last year . . . Spring House has two wins from nine starts since, those coming in the Grade II San Luis Obispo Handicap in February at Santa Anita and the Grade III Golden Gate Fields Turf in May at Golden Gate Fields in Albany . . . Was second to one of the Del Mar Handicap rivals, Black Astor,in the Sunset Handicap on July 19, closing day at Hollywood Park . . . With earnings of $971,284, an on-the-board finish will push Spring House over the $1 million mark.

OWNER ? TEAM VALOR INTERNATIONAL AND GARY BARBER

Notable: Team Valor, an enterprise to create partnerships, or syndicates, for owning race horses, was founded by Barry Irwin and Jeff Siegel. In July of 2007, Irwin acquired the equity position of Siegel and changed the name to Team Valor International, emphasizing the acquiring of runners from outside the U.S. . . . Gary Barber and his brother Cecil were the leading owners at Del Mar in 2008 . . . Will send out Becrux in tomorrow's $300,000, Grade II Del Mar Mile . . . Becrux, a 7-year-old gelding was the champion colt in Italy at 2 and has 10 wins from 39 career starts and earnings of over $1.1 million.

TRAINER ? JOHN SADLER

Notable: Will saddle odds-on favorite Black Mamba in today's $85,000-added CTT and Thoroughbred Owners of California Handicap and Becrux in tomorrow's Del Mar Mile . . . Sadler, a 53-year-old Pasadena resident, won the Del Mar training championship in 2008, saddling 31 winners to 19 for runner-up Mike Mitchell. Entering yesterday's card he was atop the standings again, albeit with only a 15-13 win margin over Doug O'Neill with 11 racing days remaining . . . Has 30 stakes wins overall at Del Mar but none this year.

RIDER ? RAFAEL BEJARANO

Notable: Returning to riding today, 37 days after an Opening Day spill here in which he was kicked in the face by a trailing horse resulting in multiple facial fractures, the most serious being to the left jaw . . . Track's riding champion in 2008 with 45 wins compared to 36 for runner-up Joel Rosario . . . Scheduled on three mounts today, three tomorrow, including Victor's Cry in the Del Mar Mile, and seven Sunday, including Obrigado in the Del Mar Handicap.

That Fantasy Thing

That Fantasy Thing

That Fantasy Thing
Hail to the ex-Chief
2:00 a.m. August 28, 2009
Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch has been required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
Handicap: Black Mamba (8th, $40W) has a huge advantage on class and accomplishments and a good record on the Del Mar turf. Plus a $2 tri key with Black Mamba in the win spot over Gloria Goodbody, Wine and Dyne and Lemon Chiffon.
Hunch: A visit to our city by former President Bill Clinton deserves a double hunch because he's one cool, Saxophone (3rd, $10W) playing guy who has Doneitagain (3rd, $10PL) with the diplomatic freeing of the journalists from North Korea. Plus a $5 EBX combining Saxophone and Doneitagain.
Yesterday's handicap: Minute Limit (7th, $20W) came flying in the stretch to win by two lengths as the 8-5 favorite and provide us a $38 profit. The $10 EBX combining Minute Limit and Coatcheck Girl was destroyed in the final 100 yards when Coatcheck Girl couldn't hold off Over Andover for the place.
Yesterday's hunch: Mean Heat (4th, $20) wasn't so hot, finishing next-to-last and never seriously threatening to wind up any higher.
Yesterday's loss: $2.   Bankroll: $1,807.80.

Jeff Siegel's analysis

Jeff Siegel's analysis

Jeff Siegel's analysis
2:00 a.m. August 28, 2009
&#;&#; ?
FIRST RACE ? LOW GEAR POWER moves up a notch following a good, come-from-behind score and seems well spotted for a repeat performance with Gomez riding him back for Mitchell. DEFENSE KING bids for his third straight win and is strictly the one to beat. UNCLE JEEP gets blinkers and the rail while dropping a notch and should be a pace factor throughout. Long shot: Run Over You.

SECOND RACE ? FAIRWAY ROAD is a first timer from the Craig Dollase barn with speed breeding and a series of solid works. In an open fray, she seems as good as any. DARK DOLORES chased straight maidens up north, drops into a high priced claimer and may improve enough to pose a strong threat. TEN FORTY FIVE has shown some ability in morning drills for Knight and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Leafy Greens.

THIRD RACE ? LUBERON has been away for more than two years and returns at the bottom but has winning connections and a solid work tab and may fire a winning shot off the bench. KBELLO figures to press the pace and may stick around a long time in a soft field. BULLYA often gets a piece of it and is worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Tribal Deal.

FOURTH RACE ? ALFARABI, with two sprints under his belt, seems ready to stretch out and win. The Harty-trained colt switches to Gomez and should be on or near the lead throughout. WINGS OF SOUND earned a good figure when fourth in a tough maiden dash and with another forward move today figures in the thick of things throughout. TWEEBSTER, an okay third in his racing bow, is another likely to improve with experience and should enjoy the route of ground and the turf. Long shot: Beau Maverick.

FIFTH RACE ? HONOURAMONGFRIENDS, first off the claim for Hartman, should enjoy a good pace prompting trip outside under Rosario and with only slight improvement can spring a mild surprise. RAINGEAR drops again in class and must have problems but rates a look off his past ability. TAINT THAT A CAT earned good speed figures at Yavapai Downs and will be tough if he can duplicate his top form on the big circuit. Long shot: My Friend Luis.

SIXTH RACE ? HUDLER, genuine and consistent, must overcome a poor outside draw but if Bejarano can get her over and save ground, the O'Neill-trained filly can be along in time. HOTROD KELLY, a $25,000 Mathis claim up north, knows how to win races and figures to be doing her best running late. CATSALOT was a sharp winner on turf up north and a similar effort today puts her right in the hunt. Long shot: Warren's Appeal.
SEVENTH RACE ? UNUSUALLY HOT returns off a four month vacation and has a steady work pattern for Walsh. Her works are decent and she's won fresh in the past, so let's go with a price play. DEBATING SOCIETY is racing in sharp form, retains Rosario, and is strictly the one to beat. FANATICAL, away since February, has worked decently for Cassidy and might get a piece of it from off the pace. Long shot: Steppin Our Rose.

EIGHTH RACE ? LEMON CHIFFON has been racing in some tough luck and is overdue for a win. She's bred to enjoy this mini-marathon trip and Flores has won with her in the past. BLACK MAMBA didn't fire in the Beverly D. recently but loves this turf course and is likely to bounce back. She's the one to beat. BEL AIR SIZZLE once was good enough but needs to improve her recent tries. Long shot: Wine and Dyne.
DANCEUPONTHESTARS, a solid runner up in his racing debut, should be set to graduate and figures tough if he can avoid trouble from the rail. WARREN'S DOC GUS has trained fairly well and could be dangerous at first asking in an open maiden claimer for juveniles. UNUSUAL DJ has a few decent drills for Abrams and may be worth using in the exotics. Long shot: Marino's Star.
Best bet: Alfarabi.

Bejarano returns today; out since July 22 spill

Jockey Rafael Bejarano was injured at Del Mar on Opening Day. (2008 file photo / U-T) -DEL MAR ? Rafael Bejarano, who suffered multiple facial fractures in the Opening Day spill here, will make his return to racing with three mounts on this afternoon's card here.

?I feel good, I feel ready,? Bejarano said yesterday morning. ?I'm excited to be coming back to the races. I hope everything will be fine in the end.?

Bejarano incurred injuries to include a broken nose, cheek and jaw when his mount in the third race on July 22, Mi Rey, fractured a leg in the stretch and bolted to the right, casting Bejarano to the track in front of several trailing horses.

One, Senor Afortunado with Garrett Gomez up, kicked Bejarano in the face, causing injuries that required more six hours of surgery and 10 titanium plates to repair.

?I've been injured many times before, but not like this,? Bejarano said.

Thirty-seven days later, Bejarano is slated to start his comeback on Wings of Sound in the fourth race and continue it on Hudler in the sixth and Haven's Lake in the seventh.

Hudler is trained by Doug O'Neill, who saddled Mi Rey on Opening Day.

Bejarano has a specially fitted mask designed to protect his face from the ?kickback? of leading horses or other flying debris.

?I used it the first three days that I worked horses (in the morning) and it feels pretty good,? Bejarano said. ?I'm going to wear it for the races and we'll see what happens.

Bejarano plans to wear the mask for a week or two and then decide how much longer he'll wear it after that.
