At the Gate - Sunday
August 23, 2009

Watch out Rachel Alexandra, there is a new filly in town.

Careless Jewel steamrolled a field of eight in Saturday?s $600,000 Alabama Stakes (G1) at Saratoga, winning by eleven lengths.

The filly is owned by Donver Stable and trained by Josie Carroll.

She made her stakes debut and her first start on conventional dirt last month in the Delaware Oaks (G2), wiring the field by 7 ? lengths, and showed yesterday that victory was no fluke. She has now won her last four starts by a combined 29 lengths.

That might not put a scare into the Rachel Alexandra camp as they continue to hope for a showdown with Zenyatta, but Careless Jewel looks like she is the real deal.

She earned $360,000 for her victory, bringing her career earnings to date to $582,846, not bad for a filly that was purchased at the 2007 Keeneland September yearling sale for just $40,000.

The track at Saratoga was listed as muddy early Sunday morning, with the turf course labeled soft. Races 2, 6, and 10 have been moved to the main track.

Here is today's opener from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Clm $25,000B (1:00 ET)

#6 Dr. Nick 6/1

#5 Icetate 8/5

#2 Volos 3/1

#1 Missile / #1a Woodacre 7/2

Analysis: #6 Dr. Nick invades from Prairie Meadows and lands back with Romans, who has sent out 8 of 11 runners here at the meet to land in the money. This colt exits a couple of Alw-2 optional claimers and it appears this guy has been facing a bit tougher than he faces here. He was fourth last out with the top two finishers coming back to finish one-two again in their next start against Alw-2 optional claimers. two back our top pick was fourth behind Ez Dreamer, who returned to win the $125K Iowa Sprint with a 105 Beyer on June 27. The colt finished second in the Bashford Manor (G3) back in '07 while under the care of Romans before his form went south. He looks like a good fit here facing $25K non winners of three.

#5 Icetate set the early fractions and could not hold off the winner late in a game runner up finish for a $35K tag (non winners of three or straight three year olds) in a race taken off the turf. The five year old makes his third start of his current form cycle and his third go for Maker. He has done his best running on wet tracks (4-2-1-1) and there is more rain in the forecast for today.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 5,6 / 1,2,5,6

TRI: 5,6 / 1,2,5,6 / 1,2,4,5,6

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 Yaddo Hcp. (5:30 ET)

#3 Remarkable Remy 10/1

#6 You Go West Girl 4/1

#7 Nehantic Kat 3/1

#5 Chestoria 7/2

Analysis: #3 Remarkable Remy did not care for his stay in Canada, finishing off the board in all three trips, twice in stakes company on the turf ands last out on poly in a race taken off the turf. The filly returns to the Kimmel barn and put in a decent looking drill over the turf here on August 17. She has won 2 of 3 over the Spa turf including taking an open stakes here last summer going a mile. The return to the NY bred ranks just may wake him up here at a decent price.

#6 You Go West Girl bobbled coming out of the gate and raced evenly in a third place finish over the poly at Arlington Park in stakes company. The mare made a good late run to finish third two back in the paceless state bred Mt Vernon two back. The mare missed winning this last year over yielding turf in a photo. I like her effort two back when she was a close up third in a deep field of allowance foes at Keeneland. The winner of that race was Ariege, a G2 winner. She has been tough when in against NY breds and she is in good hands with the underrated Proctor barn.

Wagering

WIN: #3 to win at 9/2 or better.

EX: 3,6 / 3,5,6,7

TRI: 3,6 / 3,5,6,7 / 1,3,5,6,7

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga

R3: #7 Beam of Love 8/1

R4: #7 Barcola 8/1

R5: #1 Papers to Prove It / #1a Pretty Drink 12/1

R5:#2 Dickie B 12/1

R5: #7 Forty Prayers 8/1

R7: #5 Kitty in a Tizzy 8/1

R8: #4 Hold the Cruiser 10/1

R9: #3 Remarkable Remy 10/1

Good luck today!

Jeff Siegel's Analysis
2:00 a.m. August 23, 2009
? DRAFT CHOICE looked good beating a softer field despite a wide trip and may prove to be a timely claim by Carava. The son of Bertrando can win on the raise.

COPA DE PLATA bids for his third straight score while jumping two levels in class and looks dangerous once again.

SATELLITE always gives his best and should be used in the exotics.

Long shot: Doriprize.

 SECOND RACE ?

TRAIL MIX is a tough old pro with a recent stalking win over the course and should enjoy that kind of trip again. He seems well spotted for a repeat score.

ITS IN GOD'S HANDS is the quickest of the quick and will take them as far as he can.

BRUCE'S DREAM, unbeaten in two starts with improving speed figures, should be rolling late and looked good winning over this course last month.

Long shot: Nericon King.

 THIRD RACE ?

HOLLOWEEN CANDY failed when well-backed in her debut but seems better than the line will shown. He continues to work well for Hollendorfer so we'll give her another chance.

KALOULA, a solid third in her debut for Mulhall, is another likely to make a forward move and should be right there.

FAIR CHASE is a first-timer from the Sadler barn with good workouts and could be tough if she leaves cleanly from the rail.

Long shot: Evening Jewel.

 FOURTH RACE ?

ONE CHIN AGAIN seems better than his recent races show, figures to enjoy a ground-saving trip from the rail and rates a slight edge in a wide open affair.

SUIT YOURSELF, in the money in his last three, won⅜t have to improve much to take it all.

HARLENE is ambitiously placed but figures to be running on late and may get a piece of it.

Long shot: Royal Vision.

 FIFTH RACE ?

KABOB had a prep in a recent sprint and looks ready to stretch out and win. He's shown a liking for the grass in the past and catches a below par field of straight maidens.

EMPEROR STONE ran well to be third in his recent comeback and should make a forward move today. He⅜ll be in thick of things throughout.

UNIVERSAL PEACE is lightly raced and improving for Drysdale and retains Rosario. He'll be a factor from off the pace.

Long shot: Circle Diamond.

 SIXTH RACE ?

DA BOMB, first off the claim and invading from the Bay Area, has numbers than can beat this field and gets Rosario. In an open event, let's go with the invader.

PEACE ROLL had a troubled trip when third vs. softer recently and a clean trip today could make her dangerous.

SPIRITED LADY, in the money in her last pair, should get a share again today.

Long shot: Lady BRadbury.

 SEVENTH RACE ?

CHALULA ONE always gives her best and returns to the first level allowance ranks following a gold runner up effort in the Fleet Treat. She should be along in time.

SWEET GOLDEN CAROL was overmatched in the Del Mar Oaks but isn't today. A repeat of her maiden in puts her in the thick of things with these.

PROFITABILITY should be closing well and may out finish the others.

Long shot: Certain Promise.

 EIGHTH RACE ?

BOOTLEG ANNIE has won half of her 28 starts ?a truly remarkable record? and she seems cranked up for another top performance. Gomez should have her on or near the lead throughout.

HOT N' DUSTY looked good beating a lesser field and is being wheeled back in 11 days by Abrams. She usually is in thick of things.

YOU LIFT ME UP was a decent third vs. tougher last month and helps make it a competitive grass affair.

Long shot: Bel Air Sizzle.

 NINTH RACE ?

DYNAMALT, freshened since April, returns in a claimer and this Mitchell-trained gelding beats these if he⅜s in one piece.

MY MAN SUMO adds blinkers for new trainer Mullins and seems likely to improve while stretching out to a distance he should be able to handle.

ANDWHATELSE, also in the Mullins barn, is dropping and dangerous.

Long shot: Remus.

 10TH RACE ?

ESCAPING THE STORM, a good second in a slightly tougher spot, drops to the bottom maiden claiming rung today and seems ready to graduate.

RY'S NOT SHY is an intriguing northwest invader in the Mullins barn with a better than looked fourth place finish in his only prior start.

TOM BOMBADIL is a first-timer with Rosario in the saddle so maybe he can run a bit.

Long shot: Blaze of Eminence.

Best bet: Escaping The Storm (10th)

That fantasy thing: Messing with the Zohan

That fantasy thing: Messing with the Zohan

That fantasy thing: Messing with the Zohan
2:00 a.m. August 23, 2009
Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch has been required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do. Expect a cry for bailout money sometime in August.
Handicap: Hot 'n' Dusty (8th, $20W) steps up to a small stake (Solana Beach Handicap) from a victory in an optional claiming race but comes in with the highest speed figure of the group, a good record for the course and distance, and gets turf master Alex Solis to guide. Plus a $2 tri key with Hot 'n' Dusty to win over Bootleg Annie, You Lift Me Up and Flashover.
Hunch: We're going to mess with the Zohan (5th, $20W) of Great Friends Stable, which originates from the XX1090 radio morning team of Scott Kaplan and Billy Ray Smith, and hope this one turns out to be the next Mr. Chairman for them.
Yesterday's Handicap: Strawberry Tart (8th, $20W) encountered traffic difficulty nearing the far turn and got clear only after the winner, Internallyflawless was long gone. The $2 tri key with Strawberry Tart to win over Well Monied, Starlarks and Lexlenos was a complete disaster.
Yesterday's Hunch: Self Insured (4th, $20W) was in contention for a while, but couldn't keep up and finished seventh.
Yesterday's loss: $52  Bankroll: $1,793.80

Internallyflawless, Gomez are in Oaks triumph

Internallyflawless, Gomez are in Oaks triumph

Internallyflawless, Gomez are in Oaks triumph

Trainer Bob Baffert, right, talks with jockey Garrett Gomez, left, after Internallyflawless' victory in the Grade I, $350,000 Del Mar Oaks horse race on Saturday, Aug. 22, 2009 at Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, in Del Mar.

DEL MAR ? Freshly returned from induction into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., Bob Baffert was back visiting his old haunts yesterday.

The winner's circle here after a stakes race.

And not just any stakes race, but a Grade I, $350,000 one, the Del Mar Oaks.

Given a virtually flawless ride by Garrett Gomez, Internallyflawless ($15.80) got the lead turning into the stretch and held off the late charge of 30-1 shot Nan by a half-length in the 53rd running of the meeting's championship event for 3-year-old fillies.

It was the second Oaks victory for a Baffert-trained filly, joining that of Tout Charmont in 1999, and stakes victory No. 83 for the white-haired trainer, adding to his record here.

Internallyflawless is owned by Charles Fipke, a Canadian with diamond mines ? hence the filly's name ? whose top horses generally go to Woodbine in Toronto for racing. But not this one.

?Chuck Fipke has been very patient with this filly,? Baffert said. ?He let me bring her along the way I thought she should be trained, and she rewarded us with a Grade I win.

?Mr. Fipke sent her to me last year to run on the synthetic, but she turned out to be a great turf horse.

?This filly has always had a lot of talent and Garrett was the difference today. He gave her a perfect ride. He had her in good position all the way and when the rest of the field started to panic at the three-eighths pole he stayed with the plan and then got the jump on the rest of them.?

Donttellmewhattodo, with Joe Talamo up, had a clear lead setting fractions of :23.94 and :49.31 to the quarter and half-mile marking posts while Gomez and Internallyflawless stalked in second place along the rail.

With three quarters completed in a dawdling 1:14.64, Gomez cut his filly loose, gained the lead at the top of the stretch and crossed the finish line in 1:49.46 for 1⅛ miles.

Internallyflawless was given an eight-month hiatus from racing by Baffert, starting in late December when, he said, ?things weren't right? with her.

Returned to racing in the Grade II San Clemente Handicap here on Aug. 1, Internallyflawless showed some late run but finished fourth, beaten by only 1? lengths. Starlarks, Strawberry Tart and Hameildaeme, the sixth, eighth and fourth-place finishers in the Oaks, went 1-2-3 head of Internallyflawless in the San Clemente.

?We didn't push on her too hard the other day (San Clemente), Gomez said. ?She was coming off a layoff and we let her ease back into it.

Yesterday's victory, worth $210,000 was her second in six career starts.

?I was hoping she would jump out of there today and put me in the right spot. I wanted her to help me and she did,? Gomez said.

?I could tell the way the race was unfolding that it was just right. I had to come out with her maybe a little earlier than I wanted to, but it worked out OK.?

The long-term plan for Internallyflawless calls for a run in the $2 million Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf on Nov. 6 at Santa Anita. Whether she runs again before that, will be determined later, Baffert said.

Bejarano set for comeback
Rafael Bejarano, who suffered facial fractures in a spill on Opening Day, July 22, rode morning workouts on two horses yesterday and told a Del Mar official he expects to return to riding races on Friday.

Bejarano, a 27-year-old native of Peru and the 2008 riding champion here, got started riding morning workouts a day earlier than expected.

?I feel good and it was good to get back up on horses,? Bejarano said. He has been fitted with a face mask like the ones that basketball players and other athletes wear to protect facial injuries, but didn't wear it yesterday morning.

?I will wear it in the afternoon because there's more danger of being hit by stuff while you're riding in a race,? he said.

Closers
Jockey Tyler Baze was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for X-rays of a possible fractured finger. The injury occurred when Baze's mount in the final race, R. Bee Ess, unseated him approaching the starting gate and ran off, circling the turf course before being caught . . . With four wins yesterday, Joe Talamo advanced to third place in the jockey standings with 21, one ahead of Victor Espinoza. Joel Rosario leads with 35, Baze has 29.
