At the Gate - Thursday

After knocking down four winners on top on the nine race card and producing a +119% profit with my top picks at Belmont Park on Wednesday to start the week, you would think I would be in a better mood.

However, I am smarting after missing a nice Pick 3 toward the end of the card yesterday.

Starting in the sixth race, I had Banking Holiday ($16.80) and New York Holiday ($10.40) as my top picks, and I thought I was looking good, alive to Union City at 7/2 and heavy favorite Slam the Cat at 4/5 in a compact field of five to cap off the Pick 3.

What I was not expecting was to see Olde Glamour go gate to wire for the upset, returning $44.20 and completing a $1 Pick 3 payoff of $1,405.00.

Slam the Cat could not catch the winner in the stretch, and Union City was pretty much done as they turned for home.

It?s not often I come up with $16.80 and $10.40 winners on top, sit with two-fifths of the field in the final leg of a Pick 3 including the 4/5 chalk, and come up empty handed.

That put a damper on an otherwise good start to the week.

There is a good card on tap at Belmont Park today, weather permitting. There is a chance of thunderstorms in the area, and five of the nine races on the card are scheduled for the grass, including both stakes.

Here is today's opener from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Clm $20,000B (1:00 ET)

#4 Sister's Speed 2/1

#2 Victory for M'lady 3/1

#3 Victorious Dream 5/2

#5 Madam Commander 9/2

Analysis: #4 Sister's Speed has the fitness edge over her main rivals in here, coming off a runner up finish last out versus $25K non winners of three. Last out the filly set the early fractions and could not hold off the winner late, settling for the runner up spot. Two back she ran a good second for a $15K tag against non winners of three behind repeat winner Greg's Lassy, who beat $10K non winners of four at Finger Lakes in her next outing on June 14. The filly has landed in the exacta in 3 of 4 trips over the main tack here and owns solid early and mid pace numbers. The Bush barn is having a live meet, hitting at a 25% clip.

#2 Victory for M'lady returns off a seven week break here after a third place finish at this level last out, placed second via a DQ. The mare had to steady approaching the 1/8 pole and again in deep stretch when the runner up lugged in. The winner of the race was Eightyfive S, who returned to beat open $25K claimers in her next outing on June 21, then ran second against open $35K claimers in her most recent outing on July 2. The mare has a habit of landing for minor shares but does tend to run well fresh.

Wagering

WIN: #4 to win at 9/5 or better.

EX: 2,4 / 2,3,4

TRI: no play

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 Virgo Libra S. (4:45 ET)

#4 Hot Money 4/1

#1 Scientist 10/1

#3 Coronation Day 8/1

#7 Tall Poppi 5/1

Analysis: #4 Hot Money overcame a tough trip to beat state bred Alw-1 foes last out in his first start against winners. The gelding was pinched back at the break, had to steady in traffic at the 5/8's, and lacked room behind a wall of horses turning for home. The gelding should have no problem handling an extra furlong and this is a weak looking group of state breds, four still not passing their first state bred allowance conditions to date.

#1 Scientist stalked the early pace and faded to finish seventh last out in the NY Stallion series race, his first go off a eight month layoff. The colt broke his maiden on the turf in his second career start at the Spa last summer. Kent takes the call for the Phipps barn that has won with 3 of 11 starters at the meeting. The colt makes just his fifth career start and second off the long layoff and still has some upside potential.

Wagering

WIN: #4 to win at 3/1 or better.

EX: 1,4 / 1,3,4,7

TRI: 1,4 / 1,3,4,7 / 1,3,4,5,7

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park

R2:#1 Gibson Land 10/1

R3: #4 Ready Set 10/1

R3: #2 Sporting Art 8/1

R6: #8 Press Only 10/1

R8: #1 Scientist 10/1

Good luck today!
