At the Gate - Thursday

When Senor Fuego got home as my top pick in Wednesday?s opener, returning a whopping $2.80, I did not exactly feel like it was going to be a big day.

However, the winners kept coming, Khukuri ($13.60) winning the third, Nedjma ($$9.70) in the sixth, and I swept the final three races on the card, Classical Fashion ($$10.40), Fiddlers Afleet ($3.60), and Apple Grove ($15.80) completing a $1 Pick 3 that returned $125.75.

The six winners on top on the ten race card produced a +180% +ROI with my top picks, one of the better days during the meeting.

I listed nine of the ten winners, the lone runner I missed being the D. Wayne Lukas trainee Wildcat Nation ($16.00) which was in the seventh race, a quick knockout for me in the late Pick 4.

There is only one stake on today?s card, the $100,000 New York Writers Cup Steeplechase Handicap (G1).

There are six stakes on Saturday?s card, including the $1 million Shadwell Stakes. There are 13 races on the Travers Day card, which should keep me up late the next couple of days.

Here is today's opener from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Clm $20,000B (1:00 et)
#6 Lofty Banner 7/2
#5 Longing for Malibu 6/1
#4 He's Long Gone 4/1
#1 El Windo / #1a Twisted Dream 3/1

Analysis: #6 Lofty Banner is one of just three in here that has beaten winners and the lone runner in here with a win over the main track at the Spa. The gelding made a good late rally and drew clear to beat $20K non-winners of two last out. Two back he checked in third behind Rodman, who came back to beat $50K starter allowance types in his next start here on August 19. The gelding owns solid late pace numbers and he should get some pace in front of him in this spot. He looks sharp enough he should be able to run these down.

#5 Longing for Malibu is making his first start since a fifth place finish in the NY Derby. The third place finisher in the race was Uncle T Seven, who returned to win a NY Stallion series race here on August 12. The winner and fourth place finisher both ran on Wednesday in the NY bred Albany here. The gelding appears to have enough pedigree power to handle nine furlongs and the Weaver barn has been sending out live runners at the meet, 15 of 34 starters landing in the exacta. This guy is worth a longer look if Pocket Cowboys and Legal Consent come back to run well in the Albany on Wednesday and the 6/1 ML looks more than fair.

Wagering
WIN: #6 to win at 5/2 or better.
EX: 5,6 / 1,4,5,6
TRI: 5,6 / 1,4,5,6 / 1,2,4,5,6

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 8 OClm $50,000N2X (4:55 et)
#4 Southside Babe 8/1
#6 Mohegan Sky 3/1
#8 Acquired Cat 6/1
#5 Absolute Heaven 5/2

Analysis: #4 Southside Babe made a mild late rally to finish third last out at this condition and now cuts back to 5 1/2 furlongs. The mare makes her third start of her current form cycle and has run well sprinting on the turf, breaking her maiden going five furlongs. She is going to be coming from out of it but she should see more pace in front of her here than she did last out and nothing wrong with her 8/1 ML.

#6 Mohegan Sky tracked the early pace while in between foes and made a mild late bid to finish fourth last out in the Finney. She is a stakes winner on turf and will appreciate the drop back into the allowance ranks as well as facing state breds here. Rice has been on fire at the meet and does her best work in turf sprints. Garcia is 8 for 18 riding for the barn at this meeting. She popped a bullet work over the turf here on August 21. The way the barn is going this gal is likely going to go off at a light price but she fits well here.

Wagering
WIN: #4 to win at 9/2 or better.
EX: 4,6 / 4,5,6,8
TRI: 4,6 / 4,5,6,8 / 2,4,5,6,8,9

Live Longshots:
These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga
R2: #3 Smarty Karakorum 12/1
R3: #3 Dalucci 10/1
R4: #3 Queen Ann 12/1
R5: #7 Straight Romance 15/1
R6: #4 King Rock 12/1
R8: #4 Southside Babe 8/1

Good luck today!

HORSE RACING TODAY AT DEL MAR By Richard Eng

HORSE RACING TODAY AT DEL MAR By Richard Eng

HORSE RACING
TODAY AT DEL MAR

By Richard Eng

Post Time 2 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up

Limited Will - His race two back is fast enough to crush these if repeated; like the turn back in distance.

Comic Thunder - Took a lot of betting in debut, then did a pop and stop into a fast pace; blinkers come off today.

Long Shot - Bet On the Nose

Race 2 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Mama Rosa - Barry Abrams has a strong entry plus a third uncoupled horse; she is overdue for some racing luck.

Ruffled Feathers - Has run three decent turf races on her resume; second start off a 2-month hiatus, runs late.

Long Shot - Call Me Dutchess

Race 3 - 6 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Claiming $12,500, 3-year-olds

Tap Tap I Win - Dead late closer has the most back class facing a very slow group; can run over them in the lane.

Thunderfrmdownundr - Speedball may not cave in tonight; third start off a 2-month hiatus could be his best yet.

Long Shot - Seismometer

Race 4 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $17,000, Claiming $10,000, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up

Saint's Crown - Speedball in a race devoid of early pace; the key will be going a half mile in 47 seconds or more.

Winky - Leave out A.C. Avila horses at your own peril; the filly looks awful, but the barn is running white hot.

Long Shot - Our Storm

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $53,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Imperatriz - Speedball tactics could work in a field this futile; may open up in a no passing zone turf route.

Forbidden Paradise - Appears to have the best grass resume, albeit limited; first with Lasix, watch the tote.

Long Shot - Warren's Jitterbug

Race 6 - 6 furlongs, Purse $62,000, Optional claiming $62,500, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Free Flying Soul - Bruce Headley has an uncoupled entry, and they could run 1-2; this fast filly should just roll.

Supermodel - Other Headley stock should take back under Alex Solis; don't expect the stablemates to duel early.

Long Shot - Lemon Supreme

Race 7 - 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 7 feet), Purse $60,000, Optional claiming $80,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Minute Limit - After bomb throwing the last two days and a $777K pick 6 C/O, today could be kind of chalky.

Over Andover - Sharp looking MSW win for Neil Drysdale; by War Chant, has the pedigree to love turf routes.

Long Shot - Coatcheck Girl

Race 8 - 6 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up

Lady Alex - Beaten favorite ran a winning race for this bottom class; if she repeats it, she's in the number.

Brilliant Response - Underachiever gets Garrett Gomez back, always good news; Carla Gaines adds blinkers on.

Long Shot - Makit Till Midnite

Best Bet - Mama Rosa (race 2)

Del Mar Wednesday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 16/1/$5.80; Long Shots, 9/1/$25.00; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Del Mar Totals - 445/107/$753.20; Long Shots, 235/25/$357.60; Best Bets, 24/8/$33.00

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #1 Broad Stone (4/1) in race 7 at Monmouth Park. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Wednesday, Propsistops ran out at Penn National. Stats - 129/98/$724.10

Brubaker upset helps produce big Pick Six carryover

Brubaker upset helps produce big Pick Six carryover

Brubaker upset helps produce big Pick Six carryover
By Ed Zieralski
Union-Tribune Staff Writer
2:00 a.m. August 27, 2009
DEL MAR ? On a day when upsets fueled a carryover pool of nearly $800,000 for today's Pick Six players, a 4-year-old colt from Argentina stole the $89,930 Harry F. Brubaker Stakes.
Skyrush, an import making his first start in the U.S., upset 11-10 favorite Tiago and four others in the featured Brubaker. Skyrush's fourth win in eight lifetime starts gave trainer Darrell Vienna and jockey Martin Pedroza their first stakes wins of the meeting.
?It was a little surprising to win, although he's been training very well,? said Vienna, who earned his 24th stakes race in his career at Del Mar. ?I just haven't had much luck with Argentine-breds the first time out in this country. I've had many who have trained better than him in Argentina, but haven't run well at all the first time.?
Skyrush, owned by Herrick Racing LLC, paid $25.20, $8.60 and $4.20 after running 1 1/16 miles on turf in 1:40.77. He earned $53,958, giving him $96,262 in career earnings. He edged another long-shot, 13-1 Racketeer, ridden by jockey Joel Rosario and trained by Barry Abrams, by a neck. Tiz West, the 9-5 second choice, was third.
Pedroza knew he had plenty of horse.
?He (Vienna) told me there wasn't much pace in the race and that he thought we'd be up fairly close,? Pedroza said. ?The horse put me right in the race. He was going easy, and then when I asked him, he exploded. He really finished strong.?
Tiago was just the opposite.
Going into the Brubaker, Tiago had won five times in 18 starts and had earned $2,358,270. But he'd been sidelined since February with intestinal problems. And since Tiago hadn't shown much interest in running on Del Mar's Polytrack, trainer John Shirreffs opted for the turf race for his 5-year-old star.
Tiago, who was third in the Breeders' Cup Classic last year, looked fresh and made a giant move from sixth and last to third at the half-mile pole. But he faded to last and finished 4? lengths behind the winner. It was his first race on turf.
?It looked like he got a little tired,? Shirreffs said. ?He was pretty fresh after his long layoff. He seemed to like the grass OK.?
Tiago likely will run next in the Goodwood Stakes on Oct. 10 at Santa Anita, which he won in 2007, with sights on a return to the Breeders' Cup Classic four weeks later.
Meantime, Made for Magic ($43.40) in the fifth race and Saint Chocolate ($32) in the ninth, joined Skyrush as Pick Six long-shots and assured that there were no winning Pick Six tickets. That means today's Pick Six pool will start with a carryover of $777,352. Today's wagering pool could total between $2.5 million and $3 million, track announcer Trevor Denman told departing race fans.

Closers
?The nine races yesterday were won by nine different jockeys and nine different trainers. The victory by Doug O'Neill in the opener pulled him within two of leader John Sadler in the trainer standings.
?The Brubaker is named for the late Harry F. (Bud) Brubaker, a former NFL referee, star athlete, long-time prep teacher and coach who worked at Del Mar for more than half a century.

That Fantasy Thing

That Fantasy Thing

That Fantasy Thing
Just a Minute
2:00 a.m. August 27, 2009
Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch has been required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
Handicap: Minute Limit (7th $20W) finished like a fresh import from Europe might be expected to when just missing in her U.S. debut in late May at Hollywood Park. Trainer John Sadler has had time to figure her out now and apply his winning touch. Plus a $10EBX combining Minute Limit and Coatcheck Girl.
Hunch: Weather people are warning that we're in for some Mean Heat (4th, $20W) over the next few days. So a win by this one would be pretty cool.
Yesterday's handicap: Becrux (8th, $20W) was scratched in favor of running in Saturday's Grade II, $300,000 Del Mar Mile, voiding the win bet and the $2 tri key with Becrux to win over Worldly, Tiago and Prussian.
Yesterday's hunch: Imadethecashcall (4th, $20W) was a front-running, easy winner as the second favorite at 3-1 odds, netting us a $68 profit.
Yesterday's win: $68.   Bankroll: $1,809.80.

DEL MAR ?
FIRST RACE ? LIMITED WILL returns to sprinting and ran his best around turn when second two races back. A repeat of that effort today earns him a diploma. SUCH A SHAME finished willingly to be second in his debut in March and makes his first start since then in this open state bred affair. If ready, he'll be right there. MATERAZZI showed some ability when third in his only outing up north on turf and with a forward move today could take it all. Long shot: Rappin Yodeler.

SECOND RACE ? CALL ME DUTCHESS, in the money in all three of her starts, can upset this field if she can transfer her main track sprint form to grass over a distance of ground. MAMA ROSA has a good runner-up effort over the course to her credit and is the likely choice and one to beat. RUFFLED FEATHERS figures to be running on late and has run her best races with Solis in the saddle. Long shot: I Can Hear.

THIRD RACE ? TAP TAP I WIN ran well off a layoff when a closing third in a similar spot last month and with the switch to Rosario could produce the last run. ROCHELLE'S JIMMY drops to her lowest level ever and her best effort makes her a solid pace factor with these. SEISMOMETER exits a hot race and seems sure to improve in this easier spot. Long shot: Only Be Cause.

FOURTH RACE ? RECESSS scored gamely in a similar spot last month, switches to Rosario, and seems capable of a repeat score. OUR STORM, a closing third in the same race our top pick exits, figures to be running on well again and seems like a logical exacta partner. TWODOLLARSTOWIN draws a better post today, should be forwardly placed, and figures to stick around for at least a share. Long shot: Winky.

FIFTH RACE ? WARREN'S JITTERBUG is bred to run long, stretches out after three solid sprint efforts and looks hard to deny in this two turn turf affair for juvenile fillies. IMPERATRIZ may be the quickest in the field and will take them on the front end for as far as she can. HOME GROWN LASS, a first-timer from the O'Neill barn, has worked well enough and is bred to like grass and a distance of ground. Long shot: Forbidden Paradise.

SIXTH RACE ? FREE FLYING SOUL was in too tough in the Desert Stormer at Hollywood Park in June but returns to the allowance ranks today, has worked well of late, and should be set to resume her winning ways. BONIFACIO, undefeated in two starts with solid figures, moves up a notch and with continued improvement figures in the battle throughout. PETITE CHERIE can improve her recent tries and may be a factor from off the pace at a price. Long shot: Supermodel.
SEVENTH RACE ? MINUTE LIMIT tipped her hand with an excellent runner-up try vs. subsequent stakes winner Starlarks at Hollywood Park and a repeat performance today lands her in the winner's circle. COATCHECK GIRL looked good beating starter's allowance foes over this course two weeks ago, tackles tougher today but must be respected. OVER ANNDOVER is an improving War Chant filly in top hands and with a forward move today could be very dangerous from off the pace. Long shot: Spring Tale.

EIGHTH RACE ? BRILLIANT RESPONSE adds blinkers following three straight in-the-money finishes at this level and seems ready to win. MAKIT TILL MIDNITE just missed in a photo in her debut and has every right to improve with experience. A recent fast work should have her on edge. LADY ALEX missed at 4/5 last time out but has winning connections and has to be feared. Long shot: No Due Diligence.
Best bet: Warren's Jitterbug.
