At the Gate - Wednesday

While the $1 million Shadwell Travers is usually the marquee event of the Saratoga meeting, it looks like the Spa meeting will end with a bang, as Rachel Alexandra will be taking on the handicap division on Saturday is the $750,000 Woodward Stakes.

She comes into the race having won eight races in a row, with her average winning margin over those eight wins at nearly nine lengths.

She has beaten three year olds twice and now takes on a rather thin handicap division that is lacking in star power.

Entries for the Woodward will be taken today, with six likely to line up to take on the super filly: Bullsbay, Macho Again, It's A Bird, Past the Point, Asiatic Boy, and Cool Coal Man.

Saratoga?s summer meeting ends on Monday, and there will be three dark days before the Belmont Park Fall Championship meet gets underway on Friday, Sept. 11.

The stakes action will not slow down when racing leaves the Spa. There are 22 graded stakes on the Belmont Park fall meeting, and many of them will serve as preps for Breeders? Cup contenders.

There are two stakes on Wednesday?s card including the feature, the $70,000 Lena Spencer Stakes.

A field of nine fillies and mares will go 5 ? furlongs on the turf course, including the top three finishers of the Finney Stakes on August 9 here at the Spa.

Here is today's opener from Saratoga to get our day off to a good start:

SAR Race 1 Alw $52,000N1X (1:00 et)

#6 Lost Without You 7/2

#5 Strike the Bell 4/1

#4 Cocktail Attire 3/1

#1 Dawn Chorus 6/1

Analysis: #6 Lost Without You was the beaten chalk last out against $50K starter allowance company. The filly had to check in the early going, came up the inside with a good middle move and could not get to the top pair late in a third place finish. Two back the filly was a solid third at this level in a race that produced three next out winners. The winner of the race was Girlfrioendontheside, who came back to win the $60K Crank It Up at Monmouth Park on June 28. She has a win over the turf here, taking a state bred Alw-2 optional claimer here last summer. She seems to be in the mix each time out and finds a good spot here.

#5 Strike the Bell cuts back from a mile where she made a mild late run to finish third. The runner up in that race was Dynaslew, who came back to beat Alw-1 company in her next start on August 24 here. She should get some pace to run at here and her career top came three back going seven furlongs so she looks like she can handle the cut back in distance here.

Wagering

WIN: #6 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 5,6 / 1,4,5,6

TRI: 5,6 / 1,4,5,6 / 1,4,5,6,7

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Saratoga:

SAR Race 9 Lena Spencer S. (5:30 et)

#9 Trusty Temper 10/1

#4 Smart and Fancy 3/1

#7 Karakorum Elektra 5/1

#6 Ahvee's Destiny 7/2

Analysis: #9 Trusty Temper is an interesting choice here and her 10/1 ML looks generous. She comes off a smart looking win in the Jostle at Philly on the main track. Two runners exited that race to win next out including Bold Union, who won the Femme Fatale at Penn in her next start, then ran a good second in the Victory Ride (G3) in her most recent start. Our top pick has only tries turf once in her career, a maiden win at Ellis last summer. She has a decent turf pedigree and in good hands with the Werner barn.

#4 Smart and Fancy ran second to #6 Ahvee's Destiny last out in the Finney but certainly had the tougher trip. The filly was shuffled back in the early going, steadied in traffic on the far turn, and finished strongly, beaten just a neck for the top spot. She has landed in the exacta in 9 of her 11 career starts on turf.

Wagering

WIN: #9 to win at 9/2 or better.

EX: 4,9 / 4,6,7,9

TRI: 4,9 / 4,6,7,9 / 4,5,6,7,9

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Saratoga

R2: #1 Pegasus Fever 10/1

R5: #6 Brother Stuart 12/1

R8: #4 Client Eight 10/1

R9: #9 Trusty Temper 10/1

Good luck today!

Jeff Siegel's Analysis for Wednesday, Sept. 2
2:00 a.m. September 2, 2009

FIRST RACE ? LULLABYTIME takes a sharp drop in class while seeking her winning level and the Mitchell-trained filly should be able to produce the last run under Bejarano. SUNNY PEACE is another class dropper with a big look in this league and should be on or near the lead throughout. DANCES WITH TIGERS is dropping off a Mullins claim for $25,000 and may have problems but her best makes her a bold threat. Long shot: Elle Pickle.

SECOND RACE ? CAPE OF BRADFORD just beat a similar field over this course but was disqualified for drifting out in the lane. She can make amends today if she maintains a straight course. TAMERIN looked good beating a slightly softer field over this course and with continued improvement figures tough right back. QUISIANA launches a comeback and she's trained well enough to be considered in the exotics. Long shot: Annihilation.

THIRD RACE ? RAISE THE HEAT always gives his best and the old timer can regain his winning form in a wide open bottom rung claimer. NICCOLO DREAM, first off the claim for Mullins, has been away since mid July but figures to be running on strongly late. FIGHT ON, claimed back by Truman should be forwardly placed throughout and always is tough to beat when he's feeling good. Long shot: Hunter Creek.

FOURTH RACE ? LAUNCH THE BULL earned a huge speed figure when runner up in a similar maiden claimer last month and a repeat of that race today earns him a diploma. FIVE A DAY is a first timer bred for speed and training reasonably well for Eurton. He represents stranger danger. FLYING ON is another debut runner with a healthy work tab and may be worth considering in the exotics. Long shot: Ringolevio.

FIFTH RACE ? CINNAMON DOVE takes a severe class drop, switches to Pedroza, and sports a bullet blowout over this track last week. The Canani-trained filly beats this group with her best effort. ALEX B. GOOD, freshened since May, has been working well of late for Puype and looks dangerous at this level. WADA FALLS retains Gomez and probably is better than her last troubled effort indicates. Long shot: Moon O'er Cashel.

SIXTH RACE ? BUYER'S REMORSE, a decent fourth in his racing debut, seems sure to improve with a class drop and a race under his belt and doesn't have a whole lot to beat in this soft maiden claimer for juveniles. Second time starters from the Jones barn usually move forward considerably. FORTHREEFOREUCLID is a first timer from the O'Neill barn with decent works and is worth a look in an open fray. RANGER HEARTLEY, first off the claim for Sadler, has shown some early speed and may stick around for a minor award. Long shot: Ur Turn Dubai.

SEVENTH RACE ? PREMIERE FLYER beat a starter's allowance field in sharp style recently and seems to have found a home on turf. He looks tough right back from the favorable rail. ADAM SUANCES has solid figures for the level and a good runner up try over this course last month. Flores should have him prominent throughout. THE USUAL Q.T. broke his maiden in sharp style in what already has proven to be a productive heat. He could be a strong factor right back. Long shot: Renegade Storm.

EIGHTH RACE ? UNBRIDLED MEETING won a stakes up north in game style and looks too quick for these right back. LA NEZ broke her maiden gamely with a competitive number and with further improvement should be right there. HIGH FIVE GAL ran well in her only outing when a promising second and although a maiden must be considered a contender in an open state bred stakes for juvenile fillies. Long shot: U Turn Me Crazy.

NINTH RACE ? EISENHEIM drops to the bottom maiden claiming ranks and may have found his friends. The Sadler-trained colt is an eight race maiden but gets his easiest chance yet. JAMIESON has been sparingly raced but a repeat of his last effort makes him a contender in a soft field. GOOD NEWSMAN may have needed his last and figures to do his best running from off the pace.

Long shot: Hotsie.

Best bet: Launch the Bull (4th).

That Fantasy Thing
Royalty to the end
2:00 a.m. September 2, 2009

Royalty to the end
Due to the general state of the economy and the plight of the newspaper industry, staff writer Hank Wesch has been required to take a 10 percent cut in the starting imaginary stake (from $2,000 to $1,800) and an imaginary furlough day each week (Mondays) for the fantasy betting gig during the Del Mar racing season. His daily workload, one selection by semi-serious handicapping and another by total hunch, remains unchanged. Tough times don't last. Tough people do.
Handicap: Royalty Gone Wild (8th, $20W) was an impressive winner, albeit at a maiden-claiming level, in her first career start Aug. 5. It's a step up to a stake, but training champ John Sadler apparently thinks she's capable and the pace scenario could work in her favor. Plus a $2 tri key with Royalty Gone Wild to win over Camille C, Magic Yodeler and Unbridled Meeting.
Hunch: The time has gone Flying On (4th, $20W) by and we come to the last seven racing days of the meeting. As usual, wondering where the season went but remaining hopeful of wringing as much fun as possible out of what remains.
Sunday's handicap: Artiste Royal (8th, $20W) came running late but had too much ground to make up and finished fourth as the 9-5 favorite. The $5 EBX combining Spring House, Artiste Royal and Black Astor was blown up by 12-1 shot Sir Dave finishing second.
Sunday's hunch: Spurrier (4th, $20W) mounted a late rally to finish a clearly beaten second, good for him, bad for us.
Sunday's loss: $70. Bankroll: $1,715.80.

Looking back on Week 6, ahead to Week 7

LOOKING BACK ON WEEK 6

Highlights: Ferneley winning Saturday's Grade II, $300,000 Del Mar Mile for trainer Ben Cecil and jockey Joel Rosario . . . Spring House winning Sunday's $300,000, Grade II Del Mar Handicap for trainer Julio Canani and jockey Alex Solis, to become only the second horse in 70 editions of the race to win in back-to-back years . . . Four wins from six starters on Saturday for meet-leading trainer John Sadler, tying the track record for wins by a conditioner in a single day previously accomplished by Red McDaniel (twice in 1954), Farrell Jones (1963), Ron McAnally (1989) and Jack Van Berg (1995) . . . Rafael Bejarano's comeback from surgically repaired facial fractures incurred July 22 with a return to riding on Friday and a return to the winner's circle in Saturday's sixth race.
Lowlights: Statistics, from a study last year of breakdowns in California, supporting the contention that more serious, rear-end injuries occur on synthetic than dirt surfaces . . . A truly bizarre fifth race on Friday in which jockey Jordan Springer appeared to zone out with a big lead in the stretch on Engine Sixty Nine and lose in the final jump. Stewards assessed a 10-day suspension for an ?unsatisfactory? ride . . . Monterey Jazz throwing in a clunker of a race as the favorite in the Del Mar Mile.

LOOKING AHEAD TO WEEK 7

Highlights: The Pacific Classic Festival of racing has six graded stakes ? among them the Grade I Debutante, Pat O'Brien, Pacific Classic and Futurity ? all packed into the long Labor Day weekend, Friday to Monday. Track management's intention, clearly, is a big finish at what figures to be convenient and abundantly free time for racing fans. How the first-year festival fares against the myriad other holiday weekend entertainment options offered to the general public will be interesting to see . . . Taken in order of import: Sunday's $1 million Pacific Classic looks to have quality and quantity starting with Santa Anita Handicap winner Einstein and Hollywood Gold Cup champ Rail Trip; Monday's $300,000 Futurity should have Best Pal Stakes winner Lookin at Lucky facing the second- and third-place winners in that race and some fast recent maiden race winners; Saturday's Debutante could be a rematch between Sorrento Stakes 1-2 finishers Mi Sueno and Necessary Evil; Sunday's Pat O'Brien looks to have Zensational attempting to complete a sweep of the meeting's major sprint stakes.
Notable: Off-the-track attractions over the weekend include a concert by Pete Yorn following the races on Friday, another by Ziggy Marley on Sunday and Jockey Photo Day, in which riders will be available to pose for pictures with fans, on Monday.

Pacific Classic field offers lots of competition

Pacific Classic field offers lots of competition

Pacific Classic field offers lots of competition

DEL MAR ? Pacific Classic XIX is Sunday.

The latest, on the calendar, by a full week eclipsing the August 30, 1992 edition won by Missionary Ridge.

The greatest? Not likely. But looked at with some objectivity it has a chance to be quite good from both a competition and betting standpoint, the two things which most racing fans put at the top of the priority list.

We won't know for sure until the close of entries and post-position draw are formalized tonight at an event at the L'Auberge Del Mar hotel. But it appears that the field will reach double figures and could be as many as 12 or 13, one or two fewer than the maxed-out 14 of 2002.

There are a couple of well-regarded Eastern invaders ? Einstein and Parading both arriving here on Monday afternoon. There's the current handicap division champ on the West Coast in Rail Trip. A promising 3-year-old named Misremembered. And a bunch of experienced runners with upset potential if the circumstances break correctly for them.

OK, class, here's the Cliffs Notes version for Pacific Classic XIX 101:

?Einstein, a 7-year-old Brazilian-bred has Grade I wins on dirt, synthetics and turf. The synthetic score was in the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap in March and he followed that up with a win in the Turf Classic on the Kentucky Derby undercard at Churchill Downs on May 2.

?Rail Trip won his first four career starts, beginning last November as a 3-year-old and continuing through February at Hollywood Park and Santa Anita. The gelded, Kentucky-bred son of Jump Start was the runner-up in the Mervyn LeRoy and Californian stakes in May and June before producing a $21.40 upset in the $700,000 Hollywood Gold Cup in early July.

?Colonel John, winner of the Santa Anita Derby and Travers Stakes as a 3-year-old in 2008, was an impressive winner of the Wickerr Stakes at one mile on turf here in his comeback from a seven-month layoff on July 31. The switch from turf to synthetics and added quarter of a mile over his last race will be major questions to some handicappers.

?Informed and Mast Track were the 1-2 finishers in the Classic-prep San Diego Handicap on Aug. 2, with Informed getting the win by a nose in 1:41.91 for 1 1/16 miles. In July, Informed finished sixth, beaten 9 lengths, and Mast Track fourth, beaten 8?, by Rail Trip in the Hollywood Gold Cup.

Mast Track is 0-for-7 since winning the 2008 Hollywood Gold Cup but will be carrying the colors of Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel, a six-time winner of the Pacific Classic.

?Awesome Gem came within a half-length of victory in the 2007 Pacific Classic but was a disappointing seventh last year and has only one allowance-level win to show from his last 10 starts.

?Global Hunter pulled off a 14-1 upset winning the 1⅛-mile, Grade I Eddie Read Handicap on turf in July, then was nosed out for second in the Grade I, 6-furlong Bing Crosby Handicap last month. Now he's looking at 1? miles in the signature race of the meeting in what has to be one of, if not the most, ambitious Del Mar campaign ever.

?Parading, like Einstein, is making a second trip West for a major stake assignment. Trained by Shug McGaughey for the Phipps Stable, Parading took a two-race winning streak built at Keeneland and Pimlico to Hollywood Park for the Gold Cup, was sent out as the 5-2 favorite and finished fifth, beaten nine lengths.

The Hollywood strip played to the advantage of speed horses throughout Gold Cup Day. The chances of Parading will be much better if that's not the case here next Sunday.

?Misremembered's last start was a win in the Swaps Stakes at Hollywood Park in mid-July and there's some Pacific Classic-winning history in his pedigree. He's a son of 2003 Pacific Classic winner Candy Ride and is trained and co-owned by Bob Baffert, whose one Pacific Classic victory came with 3-year-old General Challenge in 1999.

Baffert hasn't fully committed to the Classic and if he decides against it, the Super Derby in Louisiana is likely in Misremembered's future.

?Tres Borrachos is trained and part-owned by C. Beau Greeley, who visited the Pacific Classic winner's circle with Borrego in 2005. Tres Borrachos won last year's Swaps then passed on Del Mar for a shot at the Travers at Saratoga which turned out to be the first of six forgettable races.

Tres Borrachos has turned competitive recently, finishing second in the Gold Cup, three lengths behind Rail Trip.

?Richard's Kid, another Baffert trainee, was a close second in the 1?-mile Cougar II on Aug. 5 in his first race on synthetic and has trained well over the surface since.

?Song of Navarone closed ground late to finish third behind Informed and Mast Track in the San Diego Handicap.

Fatality
The Daily Racing Form reported on its Web site that the maiden filly Bell Canyon Road was euthanized yesterday morning after a breakdown near the finish line following a workout. She was trained by Barry Abrams .
