At the Gate - Wednesday

The Breeders? Cup is sneaking up, it is less than seven weeks away.

Over the next four weeks, there are 33 Breeders? Cup Challenge ?Win and You?re In? races. The winner of each of the races will earn a automatic starting berth in the corresponding Breeders? Cup Race.

The Breeders? Cup is being held this year at Santa Anita on Nov. 6-7.

Only five of the 33 Breeders? Cup Challenge will take place at Belmont Park, which has me scratching my head. There is one in Australia, three at Ascot, nine at Keeneland, even one at Calder.

There should be plenty of exciting racing over the next six weeks leading up to the two-day Breeders? Cup.

Breeders? Cup Ltd. announced on Monday that the Marathon has been moved to Friday, joining the five races restricted to females.

That means there will be a Pick 6 on Friday and Saturday encompassing the Breeders?? Cup races.

Four of the five ?Win and You?re In? races this week will be contested outside of the U.S.

Friday's Cleanevent Manikato Stakes at Moonee Valley will be the first Breeders' Cup Challenge race held in Australia.

The winner earns a starting berth to the $1 million Breeders' Cup Turf Sprint.

There are three races at Ascot on Saturday that are Breeders? Cup Challenge races, and the winner of the $150,000 Gallant Bloom Handicap (G2) at Belmont Park will earn a starting berth in the Filly & Mare Sprint.

The likely favorite in the Gallant Bloom will be Indian Blessing, a two-time Eclipse Award winner. She will likely face five foes in the race: Any Limit, P.S.U. Grad, Sara Louise, Simplify, and Thunders Dove

We have a good card today at Belmont Park, with several very vulnerable favorites and a few live longshots.

Here is today's opening race from Belmont Park to get our day off to a good start:

BEL Race 1 Alw $45,000N1X (1:00 et)

#2 Soda Pop Kid 7/2

#7 Captain Rio 2/1

#1 Richmond 5/1

#4 Precious Package 5/2

Analysis: #2 Soda Pop Kid beat $50K starter allowance company last out at the Spa in the mud, the lone win the barn came up with at that meeting where the normally high % barn went 1 for 48. The gelding has moved forward nicely in two starts since coming east and going from plastic to conventional dirt. I usually don't like backing horses in first level allowance races with so many starts but this gelding should get a good pace set up here as this race is top heavy with early speed types.

#7 Captain Rio was a good second last out on the opening day of the Spa meeting. The colt tracked a sharp early pace and could not get to the gate to wire winner Saratoga Russell, who faded to finish seventh against Alw-2 foes in his next outing. In fact, nobody really came out of this guy's last race and ran well. The colt's races have been spaced out which is a cause for concern, but his last two figs are a good fit, but can't get real excited about his 2/1 ML.

Wagering

WIN: #2 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 2,7 / 1,2,4,7

TRI: 2,7 / 1,2,4,7 / 1,2,4,5,7

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Belmont Park:

BEL Race 8 OClm $50,000N2X (4:45 et)

#8 American Cruiser 3/1

#2 Perfect Casting 9/2

#1 Fateh Field / #1a Iguazu Falls 5/2

#6 Meriwether Jessica 5/1

Analysis: #8 American Cruiser is returning off a 2 1/2 month break, winning at this level last out at Philly going 5 furlongs. The gelding has won twice at today's Alw-2 condition and has a couple of wins over the Belmont Park turf. This guy has not run a bad one since the Tony D. barn claimed him for $35K last August at the Spa. The barn is 26% winners with horses coming back off a 46-90 day break.

#2 Perfect Casting is making his first start since last November for the Clement barn that is 10% winners with horses coming back off a +180 day layoff. This gelding has a pair of wins over the turf here including beating Alw-3 optional claimers here last fall. The gelding had a rough trip at Calder in his most recent start last November. The barn can have them ready to go off the bench and this looks like a good spot for his return here facing Alw-2 company.

Wagering

WIN: #8 to win at 5/2 or better.

EX: 2,8 / 1,2,6,8

TRI: 2,8 / 1,2,6,8 / 1,2,3,6,8

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Belmont Park

R2: #7 Kettle One 10/1

R3: #4 Pamona Ball 12/1

R4: #9 Mineswept 10/1

R4: #5 Bridge to Nowhere 10/1

R5: #3 Don?t You Linger 20/1

R6: #7 Roaring Belle 10/1

R7: #2 Has Spoken 8/1

R7: #1 Stephen?s Even 8/1

Good luck today!

By Dave Litfin

BEST BET: Fenway Faithful (4th race)

First Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Captain Rio 2. Precious Package 3. Richmond

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

CAPTAIN RIO has run three races on fast tracks, and has recorded a Beyer of 90-98 each time; sharp move into torrid pace first race without the early lead at Saratoga. PRECIOUS PACKAGE has been away well over a year since good-figure maiden win as a juvenile; breezing regularly. RICHMOND steps up after front-running debut win at Monmouth Park, a race from which fourth and fifth finishers returned to win; pace factor with THE TRUFFLE MAN and top pick.

Second Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Kettle Two 2. Fire Wood 3. Aly's Wheat

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

KETTLE TWO has been idle nearly seven weeks, which may be a positive sign in view of two good efforts when similarly fresh last year, including a win on this course with Alan Garcia aboard; dropdown packs solid late kick when right. FIRE WOOD is a tough read after being eased in two-miler as the favorite; fairly consistent up to that point on a variety of footing, though overall record is top-heavy with second-place finishes. ALY'S WHEAT found best stride late when edged for runner-up spot by QUICK TO CHARM at the Spa; handles wet dirt.

Third Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Malibu Prayer 2. Acronym 3. War Echo

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MALIBU PRAYER has been knocking heads with the best of her division since a pair of blowout victories in maiden and N1x ranks; ideally drawn for stalking trip just off AIN'T LOVE GRAND. Any kind of contested pace will help ACRONYM, who overcame a slow start to win going away first time on dirt; aggressively spotted. WAR ECHO was impressive visually and against the clock winning Silverbulletday, with two-time graded stakes winner Just Jenda well back in third; purposeful work tab for comeback.

Fourth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Fenway Faithful 2. Backcountry Boy 3. Most Happy Fella

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

FENWAY FAITHFUL sprinted clear (and over to a deep rail), and dug in gamely through long drive while brushing with the winner in debut at 8-5; three works since then include a bullet half-mile. BACKCOUNTRY BOY was a clear second on a sealed muddy track first out, and has also followed with a trio of works; entrymate CATS KITTY was within two lengths of the top pick before backing off in bow. MOST HAPPY FELLA, a twice-beaten favorite upstate, recorded his best figure on this track first time out vs. a heavily bet General Maximus.

Fifth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Magnificent Max 2. Whistlejacket 3. Cullinan

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

MAGNIFICENT MAX was far back early and made up considerable ground in first turf route vs. Whirling Thunder, who wired the field as the favorite; rates edge if able to draw in from also-eligible list. WHISTLEJACKET probably rates benefit of the doubt for no-show performance in off-the-turfer last out, has previously shown the ability to bounce back from a subpar race; had stretch leads both July grass starts. CULLINAN was rated in traffic off a slow pace, circled five wide and rallied mildly as the choice last out; good try from similar outside post initial maiden-claiming attempt.

Sixth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Amiga Del Sol 2. Iron Penny 3. Roaring Belle

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

AMIGA DEL SOL held determinedly to wind up a close second in debut on this track; freshened since chasing front-end winner as part of odds-on entry, Lasix on. IRON PENNY never got close to debut winner Lovely Lil first out, but gained several lengths on the first flight as the winner drew away final quarter mile; factor this level. ROARING BELLE is a half-sister to four multiple winners, notably One Tough Belle, a $246K earner and multiple allowance winner on this circuit.

Seventh Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Bikini 2. Green Harbor 3. Stephen's Even

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

BIKINI hasn't been on a fast track since May 16 sprint at Delaware Park vs. Indycency, who came back to win her next two starts; picks up Dominguez, might sit a trip just off KANWICAT and GREEN HARBOR. The latter dueled with favored winner in the mud last out, and two back dueled with Lion's Terms, who is 3 for 3 on fast tracks; second best all three dirt starts at the spring-summer meet, the last vs. Hot and Bothered, who has since won N3L claimer and N1x allowance. STEPHEN'S EVEN turns back from a route and figures to be picking up rivals late second time back from a freshening.

Eighth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Starforaday 2. Iguazu Falls 3. Perfect Casting

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If rain forces a switch to dirt, STARFORADAY was sharp winning two in a row with last-to-first rallies at Saratoga; three starts on fast and wet tracks at Belmont resulted in Beyers of 97-98-95 last year. On turf, IGUAZU FALLS went well in U.S. debut July 8 chasing loose-on-lead Papa Bear this course and distance; fresh Godolphin horses have been running lights out for the past two months. PERFECT CASTING has been sidelined nearly 10 months since troubled trip vs. Vanquisher, who returned to win his next two starts including a $75K stake; won on this course off a 5 1/2-month absence last year. AMERICAN CRUISER has won four of last six (with three different riders) on firm, good and yielding turf.

Ninth Race

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

1. Rosalba Yankee 2. Serela's Song 3. Amber's Edge

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If Wednesday's nightcap is switched to dirt, ROSALBA YANKEE drops 50% in price off a respectable fourth-place finish in the mud here back in early June; won't be 49-1 vs. these. On turf, SERELA'S SONG has turned in three improved races since switched to grass, beginning with a fast heat on very firm ground over this course; drops to new low. AMBER'S EDGE also goes vs. $25K maidens for first time; freshened since four straight in-the-money finishes on turf and Tapeta. STORMIE GRAY just missed at 24-1 first time back from a 57-day layoff; down in class and distance.
