At the Gate - Wednesday

Another star is not coming to the Breeders? Cup.

Sea the Stars, the top rated horse in the world with six Group 1 races on his resume in 2009 will be retired, ending any speculation the John Oxx trained three year old would make it to the gate in the Breeders? Cup Classic next month at Santa Anita.

In a statement released to the press, Oxx said: "It has been decided after discussions with Mr. Christopher Tsui that Sea The Stars will not take part in the Breeders' Cup at Santa Anita on November 7.

"He's had a long season and has been in regular fast work from March 3, with his final workout on October 2. He's been in intensive training for seven months with only a three-week break after the Eclipse Stakes at the beginning of July.

"We feel it is unfair to keep him going any further, given his unprecedented record of achievement in the last six months.

"He's come out of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe in his usual good form. He is fit and healthy and has been cantering since the race."

The three year old overcame a tough trip to win the Arc in smashing fashion, increasing his bankroll to nearly $6.8 million and he was the 4/5 early favorite to win the Breeders? Cup Classic.

The fact he is not coming was good news to the Zenyatta camp, who won?t disclose whether the undefeated mare would defend her title in the Ladies? Classic or take on the boys in the Classic.

Trainer John Shirreffs said the retirement of Sea the Stars would have no bearing on the decision of which race his star would go in.

He told The Daily Racing Form, ?That has nothing to do with Zenyatta. Not at all. It's all up to her, how she's doing."

I?m not buying that at all. I?m guessing the chances of her going in the Classic went from 50-50 to 70-30.

Belmont Park is dark today after racing on Columbus Day, so we?ll have to make our money at Keeneland today.

Here is today's opening race from Keeneland to get our day off to a good start:

KEE Race 1 Clm $40,000 (1:05 ET)

#5 Trying Brian 2/1

#1 Ok Nothanksforaskn 6/1

#4 Alphabet Magic 5/2

#6 Faith's Magic 3/1

Analysis: #5 Trying Brian exits a Alw-3 optional claimer where the gelding checked in sixth after he was bumped and had to check in the stretch. Two back this guy won a $50K stake at Canterbury on turf in a gate to wire score. The runner up and fourth place finisher came out of that race to win next out. The gelding has won 2 of 3 in his career on poly including beating Alw-2L foes here back in '07. Runners making their last start at Arlington Park accounted for eight winners over the weekend.

#1 Ok Nothanksforaskn dueled for the early lead, opened up and was no match for a very sharp Sea Gaze, who came back to beat $10K starter handicap foes again in his next outing on Oct. 3 at Hoosier. The fourth place finisher Qsart also won next out, and fifth place finisher Atrium County came back to run second in the $100K Carey Memorial in his next outing at Hawthorne on Oct. 3. I'm usually quick to dismiss Hoosier shippers here, but this guy looks like he fits and we might catch a decent price.

Wagering

WIN: #5 to win at 9/5 or better.

EX: 1,5 / 1,4,5,6

TRI: 1,5 / 1,4,5,6 / 1,2,4,5,6

Today's Featured Race of the Day from Keeneland:

KEE Race 8 Alw $54,000N2X (4:35 ET)

#1 Tazarine 15/1

#6 Consequence 9/5

#9 Perfect for You 5/1

#8 Loveyou Everybody 15/1

Analysis: #1 Tazarine should be tighter for her second start off a 10-month layoff. She returned off the bench with a fourth place finish over the Tapeta at Presque Isle at this condition. Last fall here this gal missed winning at this level by a nose after battling for the early lead the entire trip. She has come back with a couple of good works over the main track here and while he faces what appears to be a tougher group than she saw here last fall if she runs her best she can be in the mix here at a generous price.

#6 Consequence cuts back in distance after a sixth place finish over soft turf in the Lake Placid (G2) at the Spa. She had to check in traffic nearing the 1/8 pole and was not a threat late. She was a good third here at the spring meeting in the Beaumont (G3) at today's distance. She did not beat a real tough field when she won her stake at Arlington, but she fits well here and is a logical exacta threat as the likely chalk.

Wagering

WIN: #1 to win at 8/1 or better.

EX: 1,6 / 1,6,8,9

TRI: 1,6 / 1,6,8,9 / 1,5,6,7,8,9

Live Longshots:

These are price plays for exotic players looking to find a couple of extra contenders to use in their trifecta and superfecta wagers. Or for those with smaller bankrolls, you might want to get in a small win-place wager.

Keeneland

R3: #7 Austons Sure Cure 8/1

R4: #12 Cosmic Transit 8/1

R4: #11 They Call Him El 8/1

R5: #10 Windham Hill 20/1

R5: #8 Prosico 10/1

R6: #5 First of Rage 10/1

R7: #11 Your Round 10/1

R8: #1 Tararine 15/1

R8: #8 Loveyou Everybody 15/1

Good luck today!

HORSE RACING

HORSE RACING
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK

By Richard Eng

Post Time 1 p.m.

Race 1 - 6 furlongs, Purse $13,000, Claiming $12,500, Fillies, 3-year-olds

Maeve - Dead late closer should be flattered by the race shape; like the turn back in distance and class drop.

Nine to Dine - Speedball has enough gas to outbreak the favorite Epitome of a Lady; duel can squash them both.

Long Shot - Ultra Awesome

Race 2 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $22,000, Claiming $25,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Sam's Special - Big favorite has been running faster speed figures; Martin Pedroza might actually help the price some.

Sofie S - No secret last time a a winning favorite; the key will be if she moves forward or regresses facing winners.

Long Shot - Sheza Foxy Jackpot

Race 3 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $44,000, Allowance, 2-year-olds

Marcello - First time on turf, but still holds a big class edge; Bob Baffert colt has pedigree to like the green stuff.

Pico Pico - Sharp second in Afflebaugh at Fairplex; he too makes his turf debut, but shows a lot of ability.

Long Shot - Purse Luva

Race 4 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

Action Gal - Beaten favorite at least has run some decent Beyer speed figures; need not be much to succeed with these.

She's the Queen B - By far the worst race run at the meet; the less starts the better, like this Hollendorfer FTS.

Long Shot - Hyper Lass

Race 5 - 1 mile (turf, rail at 24 feet), Purse $30,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up

Uffizi - Sliding down the claiming ladder to this career low level; saves all the ground and grinds it out late.

Minister Blair - This is his comfort level now; has every right to wake up and run a big race, a ton of back class.

Long Shot - Rhetorically

Race 6 - 1 1/16th miles, Purse $25,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds and up

Smooth and Savvy - Dumb ride last time when rushed prematurely; he can be rated and gets the patient Joe Talamo today.

Joshua's Dream - Draw a line thru his Fairplex debacle and his resume looks OK; from the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer.

Long Shot - Fiery Trippi

Race 7 - 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $42,000, Allowance, 3-year-olds and up

Coronet of a Baron - I know he's got more talent than he's shown in two races this year; Rafael Bejarano takes over.

Korban - Troubled trip last time points to a potential upsetter; there figures to be plenty of pace to chase.

Long Shot - Black Wolf

Race 8 - 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $17,000, Maiden claiming $32,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds

One to Watch - Ran OK in career debut at Fairplex; that one race experience can make a difference.

Bonnie Brown Eyes - FTS from the live Mike Mitchell barn; most of the starters here have shown they can't run.

Long Shot - Uncirculated

Best Bet - Sam's Special (race 2)

Santa Anita Monday - Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 17/6/$33.20; Long Shots, 9/1/$22.40; Best Bet, 1/0/$0

Santa Anita Totals - 185/46/$323.20; Long Shots, 93/14/$180.80; Best Bets, 11/7/$31.40

SIMULCAST PICK OF THE DAY - #8 Pathway (5/2) in race 9 at Hawthorne. For scoring purposes, we'll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Monday, Acronym won at Belmont Park paying $3.00 to win, $2.50 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats - 149/112/$847.10

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Wednesday, Oct. 14

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Wednesday, Oct. 14

Jeremy Plonk's Keeneland Keys for Wednesday, Oct. 14
What to Watch for Today: As we open week two, it?s best to look back at the opening week that was.

Speed has been powerful in Polytrack sprints. If you take away the one crazy-deep closer to win opening week, the average sprint winner was just 1.18 lengths off the pace after the opening half-mile. That?s considerably closer than the nearly -1.5 lengths average for the Polytrack all-time.

Route races have been completely opposite, however. Only 1 of 11 winners was less than 2-1/2 lengths off the lead after the opening half-mile. The average winner has been 4-1/2 lengths back, significantly farther than the all-time Poly average of 3-1/4 lengths off the pace.

Will the juicy price parade continue?

Last week?s opening 24 races of the meet on the Polytrack produced just 4 winning favorites and an average winner of 9.47-to-1 odds. Those are the highest opening-week fall meet prices since the average winner was 11.86-to-1 odds during the inaugural ?06 fall session. By comparison, the ?07 and ?08 fall meets opened with average winners at 6.41-to-1 and 6.81-to-1, respectively.

Weather: Bring the panchos and knit caps. A 70 percent chance of rain and temperatures only reaching 47 degrees are forecasted. When temperatures get this cool (below 50 degrees), we?ve seen the Polytrack play about one length quicker (.20 seconds) at 6 furlongs than the average time of 1:10.37. But the 1-1/16 miles average time is only .15 quicker in cool weather below 50 degrees, so you think that difference would be greater as the distances extend.

I wouldn?t put too much stock into the thermometer in my decision-making.

Polycapping 101: In this section, we?ll get race and horse specific to help your handicapping.

Not only did Presque Isle Downs preps produce stakes winners Diamondrella, Informed Decision and Noble?s Promise opening weekend, but the Erie track also spring-boarded a pair of claiming winners. PID?s 5 opening week wins trailed only Arlington (8) and Saratoga (7). Keep that in mind as Honest Trip opens the card in claiming company in Race 1.

We get our first maiden-claiming route of the young season in Race 2. Last fall showcased 4 races in this situation, all won by considerable closers (average 5-1/4 lengths behind after the opening half-mile). Three of the 4 wins last meet came with horses who raced a mile or longer last time out, and all had a 7-furlong or longer previous prep.

Race 3 provides the first-ever, high-level claimer at 1-1/8 miles on the Polytrack ($50,000 tag, previous high $25,000 in open company). And, honestly, Race 3 looks much more like an allowance race. That being said, note that of the 20 allowance/optional claiming races held at this distance on Polytrack have seen an inordinate amount of turf-to-dirt winners (13, 65%). Only one horse has won going dirt-to-Polytrack at that class level.

Interestingly, of trainer Steve Asmussen?s 11 juvenile maiden special weight winners in the Polytrack era, only 1 has come during a fall meet. He?ll try to match that total with favorite Saluting Stormye in Race 4, and with 5-1 morning line proposition P.L. Henry in Race 6.

The 12 starters in Race 7, a turf allowance, hail from no less than 9 last-out locations. How do we rank the circuits? Since the fall 2006 meeting, the 93 turf races held at Keeneland have been won most often by invaders from: Arlington (15), Saratoga (14), Belmont (9) and Kentucky Downs (7). Delaware shippers have accounted for a solid 5 winners given the circuit. Note that Turfway (5), Presque Isle (2) and Ellis Park (0) have been far less significant on Keeneland?s turf.

The average 6-furlong winner at this young meeting has been just over 1 length off the pace after the opening half-mile, so think speed in the Race 9 finale.

Feature Race Play: There are few trainer angles working against top players in today?s Race 8 allowance feature. Consequence is favored for Shug McGaughey, but note that the Hall of Famer?s 18 Keeneland wins since the fall ?06 meeting include only 3 sprints. He did win in the ?07 spring with Carriage Trail on a similar turf route turn-back to Polytrack sprint as he tries with Consequence.

Todd Pletcher has won 7 spring baby races, trailing only Steve Asmussen and Wesley Ward, but note that none of those 7 win-early types has ever come back to win again on the Keeneland Polytrack. Garden District returns to the scene of her romping debut win to try and change that in Race 8.

I?ll take a flier with Rusty Arnold?s Perfect for You. That barn already has produced 10-1 and 15-1 winners at the meeting, both moving from the turf to Polytrack like this filly. Sire Giant?s Causeway is phenomenal on this course as well and Prefect for You broke her maiden at this distance here in the spring meeting when also moving turf-to-Poly.

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 14

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 14

Mike Battaglia's picks for October 14
10/14/2009
1st Race
TRYING BRIAN (#5) was overmatched last out in a tough allowance race at Arlington. He drops back in for a tag this afternoon and his best makes him a winner at this level. ALPHABET MAGIC (#4) is also dropping back into the claiming ranks. He has been training sharply and looks like the one to beat. FAITH?S MAGIC (#6) fits in here.

2nd Race
ZORI?S EYE (#5) drops in class and trainer Rusty Arnold?s horses have been running well recently. Julien Leparoux picks up the mount and this one rates a slight edge in a well-matched maiden claimer. OFFLEE SWEET (#4) showed improvement in her second career start and should like the added distance. She is a definite threat. SWEET N SOUR NINA (#3) also looks like she is moving forward and has to be considered.

3rd Race
MIRO (#1) runs for a tag for the first time and his only win came over the Keeneland Polytrack in April. Give him the edge for trainer Bill Mott and jockey Kent Desormeaux, who teamed up to win the Grade 1 Juddmonte Spinster on Sunday. ORIGINAL INK (#2) also broke his maiden here in April. His last race was dull but a return to his best makes him the one to beat. SWEETEST RHYTHM (#5) could add some value to the gimmicks.

4th Race
SALUTING STORMYE (#3) had a rough trip in his debut but ran gamely in the stretch and finished second. Look for him to get his maiden win with Shaun Bridgmohan in the irons for trainer Steve Asmussen. ROMAN SOLDIER (#7) was no match for a runaway winner in his only start at Turfway but posted a bullet work over the Keeneland strip on Saturday and should show improvement at decent odds. DOWN WITH DIXIE (#2) rates a chance.

5th Race
BAND OF THUNDER (#2) won his first start back after being claimed by owner Ken Ramsey and trainer Mike Maker and posted a very quick work at Belmont after that score. He has handled the synthetic surfaces in the past and rates the edge with Julien Leparoux in the saddle. READY?S ROCKET (#5) can rally from just off what figures to be a fast pace and is the one to beat. TACO DON (#6) has won two of three this year and has a chance if he takes to the surface.

6th Race
WESTSHORE (#11) flashed speed at Saratoga in his debut at seven furlongs. He held on well to finish fourth in that one and shortens up to six furlongs for his return. He rates the edge in what looks like a wide-open maiden test. P. L. HENRY (#4) had trouble in his only start and has to be considered. MR. RICOCHET (#12) is training well for his debut.

7th Race
ANDIRON (#8) is a well-bred son of A.P. Indy who woke up last out and broke his maiden in impressive fashion. He should be in good position throughout and is capable of the repeat win for trainern Kiaran McLaughlin and jockey Alan Garcia. ARMSTRONG MILL (#4) rallied to finish third in the Grade 3 Saranac last out. He will be running at the end but may be better at the longer distances. YANKEE EMPIRE (#10) just missed last out in a sharp performance and is a definite threat for the win.

8th Race
CONSEQUENCE (#6) didn?t show much in her two starts at Saratoga but caught a sloppy track and a soft turf course in those races. She finished a close-up third in the Grade 2 Beaumont in her only local start and a repeat of that one would be good enough to win today. LOVEYOU EVERYBODY (#8) needed her race at Turfway and could run well at long odds today. PERFECT FOR YOU (#9) broke her maiden over this surface and is a definite contender.

9th Race
MARIA?S CHARM (#7) shows some decent efforts against better. Give her the edge as she drops in for a tag and gets blinkers for this one. REPENTER (#12) posted a recent bullet work over this surface and has the speed to be dangerous. AUTRY (#2) is a contender.

8th Race Analysis
10/14/2009
The Shug McGaughey-trained CONSEQUENCE has found a good spot for her return to racing after a nearly 2-month freshening; when last seen here at Keeneland, she finished a strong 3rd in the Beaumont-G2 here in April over the Beard Course, and seeing as this marks her first allowance contest since March at Gulfstream, expect she'll be hard to keep out of the winner's circle. GARDEN DISTRICT made her career debut here in April of 2008 and made it look easy vs. juvenile fillies; she was off from August last year until May of 2009 and has seemed to recovered her best form in her last three races; feel she'll appreciate the extra quarter-mile to run today and also the return to polytrack. Sandpiper Stakes winner DR. ZIC also won her career debut over the Keeneland poly and has been away since a 3rd place finish in the Forward Gal-G2 at Gulfstream in January; she's been working extremely well for her comeback and note trainer Scott has a 24% win percentage with horses off layoffs of 6-months or more. Previous Keeneland poly winners TAZARINE and PERFECT FOR YOU over this 7f distance should make their presence felt on the front and and from off the pace, respectively.

10/14/2009
Last weekend?s racing was extraordinary but that is the usual case at Keeneland. I did pick up a few trends off the Keeneland?s Polycapping Database. Only 3 winners over the weekend last raced on dirt, the rest came off all weather surfaces or turf, and 2 of the dirt winners last worked over all weather surfaces. Kenny McPeek had 3 winners topping the trainers list and Robby Albarado tops the jockey standings with 5 winners. Smart Strike sired 2 winners of the 3 days of racing so far.

Wednesday?s card lacks a stake race but the 8th race brings a very strong field of fillies and mares. Consequence comes off 2 sub-par efforts at Saratoga but has excuses for both. She ran well over the Keeneland course last April in the Grade 2 Beaumont and expect a big effort from her at this allowance level. Loveyou Everybody has only 3 starts this year and her first 2 were quite disappointing. Her last at Turfway was a bit of a better effort and could quite possibly set her up for a stronger finish here. McPeek saddles this one and Albarado is in the irons. Dangerous Diva will be brought over by Michael Matz with Desormeaux to ride. This filly is much better than she showed in her last 2 and look for her to improve.

Through the binocs

Miss Catalyst raced close to the pace, took over the lead in the stretch and held off the late running challenges of Pull Dancer and favorite Maram to win the $110,000 Pebbles Stakes for 3-year-old fillies by a neck. Pull Dancer won a photo over Maram by a nose for the place spot. Javier Castellano rode the Todd Pletcher trainee to victory, running the mile on the widener turf listed as firm in 1:34.18.

THIRD RACE: Song of Solomon is a 3-year-old full sister to Grade 2 winner Rockport Harbor who shipped in for trainer Tony Dutrow. With Jeremy Rose aboard, Song of Solomon stalked the pace while saving ground, but at the top of the stretch was caught in traffic when a hole did not develop between horses and she had to check. Once she got outside for clear running, she finished with good energy to win a photo by a nose for the show spot over Datts Lady Di. Honest To Betsy looked like a winner on the far turn and challenged favored Acronym for the lead at the top of the stretch, but the favorite still had plenty left and edged away for the victory.

FOURTH RACE: More Than a Reason is in the best form of his career and the margin of victory here does not show how dominant the Randi Persaud trainee was. Under jockey Edgar Prado, More Than a Reason stalked the pace and turning for home had dead aim under the leaders. While Prado sat motionless, More Than a Reason took the lead easily, and then under minimal urging nearing the wire held off favored Tizsilk by half a length for the victory.
NINTH RACE: After the eighth race, Alan Garcia took off his remaining two mounts because he became ill. John Velazquez replaced Garcia on Hoppsey and they were in good position in the stretch, but got in some traffic trouble and could only get up for third. The Cuff Shooter closed well on the rail and took the lead in midstretch, but Sao Sebah, who saved ground for most of the race, angled outside and overtook the field for the victory.
10TH RACE: Javier Castellano replaced Garcia aboard favored More Oats Please and guided the Tom Bush trainee to victory. Mythical Yarn was last early but was full of run in the stretch to place.
