Great trade for Atlanta in my opinion. Unbelievable that Portland would take on those bloated salaries but I guess with a lot of talent they feel they can contend with this team. Hawks are like 5 or 6 out of the playoffs and should be able to make a run with this team.

Make a run for the playoffs? They've given up on this season.

``We are not winning enough games this year,'' Knight said. ``What this does is accelerate the process of rebuilding. This was a deal that gets us financially healthy and makes us a player in the free-agent market.''

This trade is good for Atlanta only in the sense that they clear a lot of cap space after this season as Wallace and Person become free agents. It also will improve their lottery position.

Wallace takes Abdur-Rahim's spot at PF and Mohammad becomes their starting center. They have no real backup at either position now as Alan Henderson is always hurt. Wallace probably will show some effort -- not because he cares about winning -- but rather due to his upcoming free agency. And for the same reason, he'll probably have to behave.

What does this do for the mindsets of Terry and Jackson? Both have already shown signs of frustrations this season. At least one -- maybe both -- have already been suspended for "conduct detrimental to the team". Everyone will say the right thing, but after the honeymoon period wears off, this is gonna be one awful team. Right now, they only come to play against good teams (wins vs San Antonio, Minnesota, and Dallas for example), while often lifeless against the rest of the league. Fans have pretty much abandoned the team. This organization is a mess.

Kudos to Portland for not only finding a team to dump Wallace on but also getting a lot of value in return. I do agree with the bloated contracts comment, but in terms of personnel and attitude, this was a great trade for Portland. Defense has been a problem for them this season so Ratliff will be a great addition. Rahim will start at SF, moving Miles to the bench. They even get a backup PG in Dickau, something they've sorely needed since McGinnis was traded. Woods wasn't cutting it; thus they had been scrounging for bodies in the NBDL.

Portland dug a big hole, but if this team blends together in time, they will make a run at the 8 seed.

If the Blazers were the type of team that was satisfied with making the playoffs but never really contending for the championship, then I'd say this was an O.K. trade. Let's face it, though, Abdur-Rahim and Ratliff are not championship players. Dickau is an NBDL level player. Portland already had a 9 man rotation, which is the limit for a quality NBA team. What are they going to do now, rotate 11?

For the Hawks Muhammad will probably put up comparable numbers to Ratliff in everything except blocked shots, which is an overrated statistic, anyway. Wallace is a huge step up from Abdur-Rahim and now they finally have a jump shooter who can knock down shots consistently in Portland. I know this trade was made with an eye on rebuilding but in my opinion it makes the team much better immediately. I guess only the records the rest of the way will tell us but that is what I see right now.

I would imagine they start Stoudamire, Anderson, Ratliff, Rahim, and Randolph with the 4 primary subs being Davis, Miles, Patterson, and Dickau.

Among other things, Portland is trying to clean up their image. They've made a lot of headway by clearing out Wells and Wallace. As for making the playoffs, Portland has a long streak riding. I suspect they would be content in making the playoffs this season and building from there.

What's a "championship player"? Someone who carries a team into the playoffs like Shaq, Duncan, and Jordan? There aren't too many of those types available. Is Luc Longley a championship player because he was with the Bulls at the right time? Rahim has never been surrounded by much talent, so I don't think it's fair to label him that way.

Who comes in to spell Mohammad and/or Wallace? Wallace has taken a lot of criticism for settling for outside jumpers at this stage of his career. Even his own teammates in Portland were griping about it. Numerous times, he's taken 4th quarters off this season. The Hawks are already a fragile team with the current mentalities of Terry and Jackson. Now they add the biggest headache in the league. As I said, there may be a honeymoon period, but this will be one ugly team by year's end...

Amazing trade for Portland cause not only did they get SAR but they also got the league leader in blocks...defencive specialist Theo Ratliff.

I wouldnt be suprised if Rash(w)eed got delt B4 the deadline....possibly New York.

That's an interesting thought. New York has been rumored to have interest in Wallace. Atlanta is woefully thin on the front line now. They might be able to acquire 2 big bodies and a draft pick in exchange.
