Sorry to butt in on public forum, can't email fletcher.

Am going under the assumption that the latest flurry of meds are pressors/inotropes (keep up blood pressure/goose the heart muscle to pump harder); sorry for the big words.

Pump is likely an Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP). Long balloon (picture the balloon you twist into animals) that is inserted via catheterization into aorta (main line from heart) w/ proximal end just past aortic valve. When heart is in systole (flexing for max output), the balloon deflates to minimize resistance against which the weakened ventricles have to pump. The distal end stops before the arteries to the kidneys, so when the heart is in diastole (relaxed to allow it to refill) the pump inflates enough to keep the oxgen-rich blood right around the kidneys to provide maximum flow through them. Kidneys filter alot of crap out of the body, and in addition, keep the delicate electric and acid-base balance in the optimal operating range. The pump is kept in rhythm through electric pressure sensors; as long as the patient can maintain the current state, and doesn't get even worse, the pump will work. Its easier to see w/ a picture.

It is a desperate measure, but Matt is young. He has alot of reserve strength. Hope this helps
