The top two teams in the West Coast Conference meet, although Gonzaga pretty much has a stranglehold on the regular season title. St. Mary's plays brilliant defense (39% shooting allowed) and 58 ppg at home where they won 10 of their first 11 games! Gonzaga allows 38% shooting and 66 ppg, with the most talented team in the WCC. Gonzaga's tall frontcourt helps this team shoot 52% led by 6?-8?, 250-pound senior Cory Violette (14 ppg, 7.7 rpg) and 6?-9?, 230-pound junior Ronny Turiaf (15 points, 6.5 boards per game, 53% shooter). They have depth, defense and great guard play from 6?-4? senior G Blake Stepp (15 ppg, 7.4 apg). The St. Mary's Gaels outscore opponents by an 82-58 average at home. Do they have the frontcourt to pound the boards with mighty Gonzaga? Well, the frontcourt is good and big, anchored by 6?-10? sophomore forward Daniel Kickert (14 ppg, 6 rpg) and 6?-9? senior Frederic Adjiwanou (7 rpg). When these teams met last month on January 17, Gonzaga won 75-61, though St. Mary's got the cover. A year ago on this court, St. Mary's also got the cover, slowing the pace down in a 56-53 Gonzaga win.
